Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elizabeth Montgomery was born on 15 April 1933 in Los Angeles. She was the daughter of actor Robert Montgomery and his wife Elizabeth Bryan Allen, who was a Broadway actress. What was Elizabeth's middle name?

Answer: Victoria

Elizabeth was Robert Montgomery and Elizabeth Bryan Allen's second child. Her elder sister, Martha Bryan Montgomery, died before Elizabeth was born. Martha was born on 13th October 1930, and passed away in 1931 from spinal meningitis, at the age of 14 months. On 6th January 1936, Elizabeth's younger brother Robert Montgomery Jr. was born. Robert Jr was commonly known as Skip. Elizabeth was educated at The Spence School which is a private all-girls school in New York City.
2. In 1951, Elizabeth made her television debut on her father's television show 'Robert Montgomery Presents'. She played the role of his daughter. It wasn't until 1955 that Elizabeth's made her first feature film; what was the title?

Answer: The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell

It was during the filming of the 'Court Martial of Billy Mitchell' that Elizabeth met the man who would become her second husband. She'd married Fred Cammann, a wealthy New Yorker, in 1954 but had divorced him by the following year. Elizabeth married her 'Court Martial of Billy Mitchell' co-star Gig Young on 28th December 1956 after a 17 month courtship. Young was 20 years older than Elizabeth.
3. In 1962, Elizabeth met her third husband while filming the movie 'Johnny Cool'. They started to date and in a small private ceremony on 26th October 1963, the two of them married.. What was his name?

Answer: Bill Asher

Elizabeth divorced her second husband, Gigi Young, in January 1963 when she was in Mexico City. Nine months later she was married to Bill Asher. Elizabeth and Bill made the decision to work on a project together instead of Elizabeth staying at home to raise a family. It was around the same time that the two of them were offered the television show 'Bewitched'.
4. In November 1963, a pilot for 'Bewitched' was filmed. The show's premise was that a young witch played by Elizabeth married a mortal man, played in the pilot and first five seasons by Dick York. However, Elizabeth and Bill had not originally gone to ABC to discuss 'Bewitched' instead it was another comedy called "The ___ ______ ".

Answer: The Fun Couple

The premise of this show was similar to that of 'Bewitched' but, instead of the woman being a witch, she was a wealthy woman who married a gas station attendant. The idea of using witchcraft instead of richcraft appealed to Elizabeth and Bill and so they signed to Screen Gems.
5. Elizabeth's character, Samantha, on 'Bewitched' performed many of her feats of magic with a twitch of her nose. Why was this gesture chosen?

Answer: It was a nervous habit of Elizabeth's

Elizabeth never actually twitched her nose but rather her upper lip, which caused her nose to follow. Bill noticed that Elizabeth had a habit of doing this when she was nervous, and suggested that she do it for the show. Elizabeth was, supposedly, unaware of doing this. After 'Bewitched' ended, Elizabeth refused to twitch her nose after the show went off air.
6. Shortly after the pilot episode of "Bewitched" was filmed, Elizabeth discovered that she was pregnant with her first child. As the character was a newly wed at the time, the crew had to hide the pregnancy from the viewers. On 26th July 1964, the Asher's first child was born. What name did they chose?

Answer: William Allen Asher Jr.

William Allen Asher Jr weighed 7lb 6oz at birth and was often referred to as Billy. Elizabeth returned to work at 'Bewitched' three weeks after her son's birth against the orders on the doctor.

Elizabeth gave birth to her second son, Robert Deverell Asher, on 5th October 1965, he weighed 7lb 2oz. On-screen Elizabeth's character, Samantha, delivered her first child - daughter Tabitha (originally spelt Tabatha). Her third, and final, child was her only daughter, Rebecca Elizabeth Asher. Rebecca was born on June 17th 1969, weighing in at 7lb 13oz. Coincidentally, Rebecca shares her birthday with twins Erin and Diane Murphy was played the role of Elizabeth's on-screen daughter Tabitha. On-screen, Elizabeth's pregnancy with Rebecca coincided with the birth of Samantha's son Adam.
7. 'Bewitched' ended after eight seasons on 25th March 1972, after 254 episodes. As this happened, the Asher's marriage also came to an end. In July 1973, they divorced amicably and Elizabeth was awarded full custody of their three children. Shortly after this, Elizabeth made a TV movie called "Mrs. Sundance". It was during the making of this TV movie that she met the man who would become her fourth husband. What was his name?

Answer: Robert Foxworth

Robert Foxworth, like Elizabeth, was divorced and had custody of his children - Bo and Krystin. The two families moved in together in 1974 and wary of having a fourth failed marriage, the pair were companions for many years. They married on the 28th January 1993 in a private ceremony. Many did not know about the marriage until Elizabeth's death.
8. During a film shoot in 1995 Elizabeth became ill but put it down to just having flu and a heavy workload. So she carried on filming. This was to become Elizabeth's final role but what was the name of the character which she played?

Answer: Edna Buchanan

Elizabeth played the role of Edna Buchanan in two television movies the first being 'The Corpse Had a Familiar Face' which was in 1994 and 'Deadline for Murder: From the Files of Edna Buchanan'. Elizabeth did play the other characters which I have listed. She was Lizzie Borden in 1975 television movie 'The Legend of Lizzie Borden', Blanche Taylor Moore in the 1993 television movie 'Black Widow Murders: the Blanche Taylor Moore Story' and Abigail Foster in the 1985 television movie 'Between the Darkness and the Dawn'.

After playing the role of Samantha, Elizabeth spent the rest of her career seeking dramatic roles which would take her as far away from the typecast of Samantha as possible.
9. After filming was completed on 'Deadline For Murder', Robert Foxworth insisted that Elizabeth get medical attention. Just eight weeks following her cancer diagnosis on 18th May 1995, Elizabeth passed away at her home surrounded by her loved ones. What cancer was it that caused her death?

Answer: Colorectal Cancer

It was Elizabeth's request that she die at home, and be cremated. During her career, Elizabeth was nominated for a total of nine Emmy awards including 5 for 'Bewitched', one for 'The Untouchables: the Rusty Heller Story', and 3 for the television movies: 'A Case of Rape', 'The Legend of Lizzie Borden' and 'The Awakening Land'
10. In 2005, a feature film was made based on Elizabeth's television show 'Bewitched'. To coincide with this, TV Land placed a tribute to Elizabeth and her character, Samantha, in Lappin Park in Salem. What was this tribute?

Answer: A bronze statue of Elizabeth as Samantha

The 9 foot tall bronze statue shows Elizabeth as Samantha seated upon a broom - an image similar to what is seen in the cartoon opening credits of the show. At the beginning of the seventh season of 'Bewitched', they filmed eight episodes in Salem.

On 4th January 2008, Elizabeth's star on the Hollywood walk of fame was unveiled almost five years after it was announced in June 2003. The award was accepted by two of Elizabeth's children, Billy and Rebecca, her other son, Robert, was also in attendance. Also there were Robert Foxworth, Bill Asher, Elizabeth's grandchildren, her children's spouses and her 'Bewitched' co-stars Erin Murphy and Bernard Fox.
