James Scobie was a Scottish gold digger who was murdered at Ballarat on 7 October 1854. On 6 October, late at night, he became involved in a fight at Eureka Hotel. James Scobie is buried in the old Ballarat cemetery.

James Bentley was the Eureka Hotel manager. He was tried, but the jury found not enough evidence to convict him. It was believed that a member of the jury was a friend of James Bentley's. The miners wanted revenge. Judge Redmond Barry held another trial, where James Bentley, along with William Hance and Thomas Farrell were found guilty of manslaughter and were sentenced to three years' hard labour. Justice had been done.

A 3-month license cost 2 pounds, while a one month license cost 30 shillings. No wonder they burnt their licenses! They were way too expensive! Even shopkeepers needed to have licenses. The police used lack of a valid license as an excuse to take anyone away.

But shopkeepers could earn that money back, because there would only be one supply store for miles around, and they could charge any price they wanted.
