Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. James Scobie was an unfortunate man who was found outside Eureka Hotel in Ballarat, murdered. But what was special about James Scobie?

Answer: Nothing - he was a plain gold digger

James Scobie was a Scottish gold digger who was murdered at Ballarat on 7 October 1854. On 6 October, late at night, he became involved in a fight at Eureka Hotel. James Scobie is buried in the old Ballarat cemetery.
2. Who was thought to be James Scobie's murderer?

Answer: James Bentley

James Bentley was the Eureka Hotel manager. He was tried, but the jury found not enough evidence to convict him. It was believed that a member of the jury was a friend of James Bentley's. The miners wanted revenge. Judge Redmond Barry held another trial, where James Bentley, along with William Hance and Thomas Farrell were found guilty of manslaughter and were sentenced to three years' hard labour. Justice had been done.
3. What was the date that the miners burnt down the Eureka Hotel?

Answer: 17th October 1854

On 17 October 1854 the hotel was burnt down. On the 7 October James Scobie was found dead, while on the 29 November the miners burnt their licenses. 3 December 1854 saw the hoisting of the Eureka flag.
4. Where did the Eureka Stockade take place?

Answer: Ballarat

The Eureka Stockade was a major rebellion by miners in Ballarat against the government of Victoria, which suppressed the uprising with military force.
5. Where did the miners hold their meetings?

Answer: Bakery Hill

A well attended meeting was held on Bakery Hill on the 29 November, three days before the attack, where the Eureka Flag was raised for the first time.
6. Who was the leader of the miners?

Answer: Peter Lalor

Peter Lalor was the leader of the rebellious group. Amazingly, he survived the battle!
7. What was on the Eureka Flag?

Answer: The Southern Cross

The Southern Cross is the brightest constellation seen in the Southern Hemisphere. It is currently on the Australian, New Zealand, Paupa New Guinean, Brazilian and other flags.
8. How much did a miner's license cost?

Answer: 30 shillings per month

It would never be free. 30 shillings per month was quite a lot of money in the 1850s. The commissioner stationed at the goldfield would not make any money if the license was free. The commissioner usually gave less money than what the gold was worth. A license for three months cost £2.
9. Why did the miners burn their licenses?

Answer: They cost too much

A 3-month license cost 2 pounds, while a one month license cost 30 shillings. No wonder they burnt their licenses! They were way too expensive! Even shopkeepers needed to have licenses. The police used lack of a valid license as an excuse to take anyone away.

But shopkeepers could earn that money back, because there would only be one supply store for miles around, and they could charge any price they wanted.
10. How many people died in the battle?

Answer: 30 diggers and 6 soldiers

Unfortunately, a total of 36 died. The amazing thing is that Peter Lalor, the leader of the rebellious group, had survived!
