Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the best alternative to a plastic water bottle?

Answer: Metal water bottle

Plastic water bottles are not the best choice for a few reasons. They are made from petroleum, which is a finite resource and can run out. Also plastic bottles, plastic cups and paper cups create waste when we dispose of them. When plastic bottles are recycled, they can be made into lower quality products, but a plastic bottle cannot become another plastic bottle.

This is because plastic melts at a temperature lower than what is required to kill off germs. Metal water bottles are the best choice because you can refill them without worrying about chemicals from a plastic bottle leaching into your water.

They do not create waste because you don't have to throw them away.
2. What should you do with your computer when you're not using it?

Answer: Turn it off and unplug it

Contrary to popular belief leaving a computer on does use more energy than turning it on and off. Also, even when it's turned off, a computer or any electronic device uses power when the wall switch is on. Unplugging stops the extra energy use. Bottom line: be sure to turn off the computer when you're not using it, then unplug it.
3. What's best when it comes to lights?

Answer: Turn them off when you leave a room.

Lights should be turned off when you leave a room. Otherwise, you are just wasting energy, and raising your electricity bill. This rule always applies regardless of the time of year or day. However, if the room is sunny, leave the lights off.
4. What is the name for the alternative to gasoline that can be made from corn?

Answer: Ethanol

Ethanol can come from corn. Another source of ethanol is sugar cane. The process of making the ethanol that can be used as fuel in cars involves the fermentation of the sugars, distillation to remove water and dehydration, which also removes water. Ethanol can be mixed with gasoline. A mixture that is 85% ethanol would be called E85. Pure ethanol is called E100.
5. Which of the following is a renewable energy source?

Answer: Wind

Gasoline, oil and coal are all nonrenewable resources, and we are running out of them. Renewable energy sources include wind, solar, and geothermal energies.
6. What should you do with computers that do not work anymore?

Answer: Recycle them properly

Most of the electronic waste or e-waste ends up in places where people do not have the technology to properly dispose of them. Some people do melt down the computers to get the metals inside to use them. This releases heavy metals, like mercury that are used to make the computers. That is BAD! If you live in the US, go to http://www.eiae.org/ to find an e-cycling center near you.
7. If you want to be really environmentally friendly, where should you buy your produce?

Answer: A farm stand in your town

Locally grown produce is the best in terms of its effect on the environment. Food grown elsewhere must be shipped to the store, therefore causing more carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation. Traveling a few minutes has much less of an impact than a cross-country drive.
8. How full should your washing machine or dish washer be before you run them?

Answer: Completely

Whether you are washing dishes or clothes, a full load is always best. This saves water because you're not running the extra loads, and it also saves the time that extra loads take.
9. What should you do with paper products like newspaper, lined paper or computer paper when you're done with them?

Answer: Always recycle them

Paper accounts for the largest percentage of America's waste, and it could all be recycled. Some towns pick up recycling the same way they pick up trash, while some have special facilities. Also, deforestation is a problem, and paper production contributes to that problem.
10. It is more eco-friendly to print on both sides of a piece of paper.

Answer: True

Paper largely contributes to the amount of solid waste a country produces. Printing on both sides saves paper, and cuts down your personal paper usage. When you're done with whatever you printed, recycle it!
