Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many different types of leprosy are there?

Answer: 2

Neural, or tuberculoid form consists of lesions on skin and peripheral nerves, as well as loss of sensation. Cutaneous, or lepromatous form consists of progressive disfiguring nodules in skin and invades throughout the body.
2. What is the pathogen that causes leprosy?

Answer: Mycobacterium leprae

Mycobacterium leprae is an acid-fast bacillus, cultured only in laboratory animals (nine-banded armadillos and mouse footpads).
3. What is the incubation period for leprosy?

Answer: 9 months to 20 years

The average is about 4 years for tuberculoid leprosy and 8 years for lepromatous leprosy.
4. How many cases of leprosy were reported in the U.S. in 1998?

Answer: 102

Worldwide it was estimated to be about 2.5 million in 1994. Most U.S. cases involve people who immigrated from developing countries.
5. The exact mode of leprosy transmission had been definitively established by the end of the twentieth century.

Answer: True

The organisms may gain entrance through the respiratory tract or broken skin. Leprosy does not appear to be easily transmitted from person to person. Prolonged, close contact with an affected person appears to be necessary.
