The Battle of Pittsburg Landing which occurred on April 6-7, 1862 was one of the worst battles in the western theatre. More casualties were sustained during this two day battle than in any other battle previously fought in North America.

McPherson commanded the Army of the Tennessee Prior to his death. He was a protege of both U. S. Grant and W. Sherman.

John Gibbon was a career officer in the US Army who was involved in both the Civil War and campaigns against the Indians in the American West.
