Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main villains in this story were the Marauders, a group of mutant assassins-for-hire. What was the name of their field leader?

Answer: Scalphunter

Scalphunter's "techno-morph" mutant power allowed him quickly construct a wide array of weapons (and perhaps other things, but he mostly cared about the weapons) from various components he carried with him. Riptide was also a member of the team, but didn't have a leadership role.
2. The villain Apocalypse makes a brief appearance in the crossover event as he begins recruiting mutants for this "Horsemen of Apocalypse" team. Whom did he recruit?

Answer: Plague

Apocalypse appears and rescues Plague from the carnage so she can become Pestilence for his new team. It was fitting, as her mutant power allowed her to infect someone with a terrible disease by touch. Angel is recruited by Apocalypse to become the Horseman Death shortly after the crossover event ended.
3. The mutants that were the targets of the massacre lived in abandoned tunnels under New York City. What were these mutants called?

Answer: Morlocks

The term refers to a subterranean race that appeared in "The Time Machine" by H. G. Wells. For a brief time, the X-Man Storm was their leader.
4. Of the ten members of the Marauders who went into the tunnels to carry out their massacre, three didn't make it out alive. What were their names?

Answer: Blockbuster, Prism, Riptide

Thor took care of Blockbuster, while Jean Grey smashed Prism. Colossus took heavy damage using his body to protect others from Riptide's barrage of lethal spikes before breaking the Marauder's neck.
5. The Marauder Malice worked behind the scenes and was not on the front lines during the Massacre. She is incorporeal and could possess a host. When someone was possessed by Malice, comic book artists represented this by giving the victim glowing blue eyes.

Answer: False

Actually, possessed people donned a cameo-like choker. Dazzler and, in a later storyline, Polaris, were possessed by Malice and wore the choker.
6. The Mutant Massacre was the first time (at least, in publication history) that Wolverine battled Sabretooth.

Answer: True

Though their story has been retconned many times along the way, this storyline was the first time that they'd fought against each other in terms of publication history.
7. Angel battled two Marauders and suffered grave injuries as a result. Who were the two Marauders?

Answer: Blockbuster and Harpoon

The two Marauders broke Angel's wings and then pinned him against a wall with harpoons to his wings. Turns out that if your main power is winged flight, then going to battle in narrow underground tunnels is probably a tactical mistake.
8. Towards the end of the story line, Sabretooth attacks the X-Mansion to destroy Cerebro. One mutant staying at the estate fights Sabretooth on her own, leading him away from the infirm ward saving several injured X-Men. She was eventually offered a spot on the team for her bravery. Who was it?

Answer: Psylocke

Psylocke was from England and the sister of Captain Britain. As is fitting for the Iron Age time period, a few years after the Mutant Massacre story, Psylocke's power set-- and appearance!-- changes and she shifts from a stuffy British telepath to a skilled East Asian ninja-style warrior who projects her psionic powers as blades emerging out of her closed fists.
9. Though they were mutants, most of the Morlocks had abilities that weren't particularly powerful. This is seen from the start with the first victim in the story line, a Morlock named Tommy. What was her power?

Answer: She could become two-dimensional.

The pinball reference is a nod to The Who's famous rock opera "Tommy"; the rest are actual powers that Morlocks had.
10. Several titles not directly connected to Marvel's mutant books had tie-ins to the story, including Thor and Power Pack. One other non-mutant had the chance to battle Sabretooth soon before the Marauder attacked the X-Mansion. Who was it?

Answer: Daredevil

Though not "officially" part of the crossover, the headline "The Mutant Massacre Continues!" appears on the cover of "Daredevil" #238, where this fight takes place. In story continuity, it fits in between "Uncanny X-Men" #212 and #213.
