Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which state is home to an annual 500 mile race on a track known as The Brickyard?

Answer: Indiana

The Brickyard is the nickname of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home each May to the Indianapolis 500 motor race. The track is a two and a half mile (4 km) long oval, so the 500 mile race involves 200 laps of the track.

Also described as a "rounded rectangle" the track opened in 1909 as an unpaved gravel and tar track, which proved to be rather treacherous. The entire surface was paved with bricks for safety reasons, giving rise to the nickname, and 1911 saw the first running of the "500". After the First World War, parts of the track were gradually paved with tarmac/asphalt replacing the bricks, until by 1961 only the Yard of Bricks at the the Start/Finish line remained.

Indiana is situated in the midwestern United States, and is nicknamed the Hoosier State.
2. What is the name of the song by Bon Jovi that contains the lyrics "I'm a cowboy, On a steel horse I ride..."?

Answer: Wanted Dead or Alive

Although the chorus of the song begins with the words "I'm a cowboy", it is the concluding line that gives it its title. The chorus goes:
"I'm a cowboy
On a steel horse I ride
I'm wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive."

Written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, the song appeared on the band's 1986 album "Slippery When Wet" and was later released as a single. It reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
3. What word describes the parts of swords gripped by the persons using them?

Answer: Hilts

Even though it is the weakest part of the blade, gripping a sword by the foible should be avoided, unless you don't mind cutting your hand! The part to grab is the hilt, sometimes called the handle or haft, which is made up of the guard, the grip and the pommel.
4. In Australia, what is an Esky?

Answer: A cooler

Originally a brand name of a portable cooler for food and drinks, Esky became a generic term for any such cooler in Australia, in the same manner that UK vacuum cleaners are hoovers and paper hankies are all Kleenex. The company that makes the brand name Esky was founded in 1884, in Australia.
5. What type of transportation is made by Ducati, Kawasaki and Indian?

Answer: Motorcycles

Ducati is an Italian maker of fine motorcycles, including high performance racing models, since 1926.
Kawasaki is a Japanese company that makes all sorts of motorised vehicles, including motorcycles which they began producing in the 1950s. Indian was an American motorcycle brand, that operated in Massachusetts from 1901 until 1953, and was revived in the late 1990s.
6. What surname sounds belligerent, but most probably derives from an Old French word for "round" or "ball"?

Answer: Bullett/Bullitt

One likely derivation of the name Bullett (Bullitt) is that it is a corruption of the French name Boulet, which itself is derived from "boule", meaning round or ball. The name was likely originally given to a person of rotund build.
7. By what other name is the Continental Toy Spaniel more often known?

Answer: Papillon

The breed gets the name Papillon because of its resemblance to a butterfly, achieved by the shape of the ears and the wispy tendrils of long hair surrounding them. Oh, yes, papillon is French for butterfly. They are sweet looking and delicate little dogs, said to make good family pets.
8. What name did television's Fred and Wilma Flintstone give to their child?

Answer: Pebbles

"The Flintstones" (1960-66) was an animated series aimed at grown ups, and shown in "prime time", a new concept for the time. The story was set in the times of cave dwellers, but they had modern conveniences like cars, television and kitchen appliances.

Fred and Wilma named their daughter Pebbles. Bamm-Bamm was the son of their friends and neighbours, Barney and Betty Rubble. Dino was the Flintstone's pet dinosaur/dog.
9. Which African republic, formerly part of French Equatorial Africa, has as it motto "Unity, Work, Progress"?

Answer: Chad

Of course the motto is more properly rendered in one of the two official languages; French ("Unité, Travail, Progrès") or Arabic (which is unlikely to show here correctly). The country was under French rule from 1920 until it gained its independence in 1960.
10. Consider the answers to the first nine questions, then decide, who is the common bond?

Answer: Steve McQueen

Born in Indiana (Q1), Steve McQueen (1930-1980) had his first starring role in the sci-fi flick "The Blob" (1958), but it was as Josh Randall in television's "Wanted: Dead of Alive" (1958-61)(Q2) that he became a household name. He was one of the original "Magnificent Seven" (1960).

As Hilts (Q3), the "Cooler King" (Q4) in "The Great Escape" (1963) he was able to display his motorcycle riding skills (Q5), though it was Bud Ekins who did the famous jump over the fence stunt and not Steve. McQueen did participate in the chase scene (title) however, and due to editing actually ended up chasing himself at one point.

He participated in another great chase (title) in "Bullitt" (1968)(Q6) and was listed as one of the drivers in "Le Mans" (1971). He received a Golden Globe nomination for "The Reivers" (1969) and for "Papillon" (1973) (Q7). For "The Sand Pebbles" (1966) (Q8) he received both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.

He was married three times, and had a daughter, Terry, and son, Chad (Q9), with his first wife Neile Adams. Chad is also an actor, though his career has not shone as brightly as did Steve's.

Steve McQueen died too young, of cancer, probably caused by exposure to asbestos, possibly during his service in the Marine Corps.
