Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This knot has the name of a royal family and is used to tie one's tie. What is the name of this knot?

Answer: Windsor Knot

There are three versions of the Windsor knot: a half-Windsor, a Windsor and a double Windsor, all of which are used to tie a tie. It is often thought the Windsor knot was named after the Duke of Windsor, although in reality it is more likely to been been invented by his father, George V.
2. Part of this knot's name includes a bovidae reference. It is used to shorten a length of rope. What is it called?

Answer: Sheepshank

A sheepshank knot is not a very stable knot, but it is reasonably secure when under tension. Coarser rope will cause the knot to be stronger as well. A sheepshank knot can be used to shorten rope or to store it.
3. The word "knot" can also refer to a measure of speed.

Answer: True

Boat and air speeds are normally measured in knots, as are wind speeds and river currents. One knot equals 1.15 of a mile, which equals one nautical mile. Thus, 35 knots is equal to approximately 40 mph.
4. If you were using a bow knot, also known as "bunny ears" because of its appearance, what would you be tying up?

Answer: Shoelaces

A bow knot is not only used to tie shoelaces but can also be used to tie a bowtie. Another name for it is the shoelace knot. It is designed to be a quick release knot. In most cases it is the first knot we are ever taught as children.
5. When the cabin crew on a plane give their safety brief before the plane takes off, what type of knot do they normally say we should use to secure our lifejackets if required?

Answer: Double Bow

It is thought the idea behind tying a double bow knot is to make it easy to untie when hands are cold, although the idea that anyone would worry about what type of knot to tie while a plane is coming down in the sea is amazing.
6. What name is given to a method of textile-making that uses knotting rather than weaving or knitting?

Answer: Macrame

Materials used in macramé or macrame can include cotton twine, linen, hemp, jute, leather or yarn. Items produced include anything from belts to large artistic displays for walls. Macrame is believed to have been invented by 13th century Arab weavers. Sailors later used this art to make items whilst off duty at sea, and then they could use the items to barter when they arrived at their destinations.

This was how the art arrived in the Far East, including China.
7. Some people are said to tie a knot in this item to remember something. What item would they tie a knot in?

Answer: Handkerchief

In days gone by, when most gentlemen carried a fabric handkerchief, gentlemen would tie a knot in their handkerchief to remind themselves there was something not to be forgotten. Whenever they reached for their handkerchief, they would be reminded of what they had tied the knot for. More recently this practice has reduced due to the use of tissues instead of handkerchiefs.
8. A knot in a rope will:

Answer: weaken the rope

Any knot tied in a rope will weaken it. Whilst all knots reduce the strength of ropes, some knots are stronger than others. A rope practically never breaks within a knot. It will normally break just outside the entrance to the knot. You can normally estimate a knot's strength by examining the severity of its bends.
9. What knot would you be trying to tie if you followed the following instructions, "right over left; left over right"?

Answer: Reef knot

The reef knot, also known as the square knot, is a simple binding knot normally used to secure a rope or a line around something. It has been used to join two lengths of rope together, but is not really suitable for this as it is not stable enough for this purpose.

The knot is between 4000 to 9000 years old, but the name only dates from at about 1794 when the knot was used to tie reef sails down.
10. Bearing in mind what the theme of this quiz has been, what four-letter word means a type of imperfection in a piece of wood?

Answer: knot

A side branch or a dormant bud is what normally causes a knot to form in a piece of wood. In some decorative uses of wood a knot adds to the visual effect of the wood. However in some cases it can really cause problems, as in some cases resins in the wood can continue to bleed through the knot for months and even years.
