Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chronicler sought out Kvothe to ask him to tell his tale. Kvothe decided to begin at the beginning and started with the creation of the world. When Chronicler laughed, Kvothe said, "I see you laugh. Very well, for simplicity's sake, let us assume I am..." What?

Answer: "...the center of creation."

Kvothe continued his explanation, "In doing this, let us pass over innumerable boring stories: the rise and fall of empires, sagas of heroism, ballads of tragic love. Let us hurry forward to the only tale of any real importance." His smile broadened. "Mine."

And thus began Kvothe's story. Chronicler sought him out, despite the belief that he had died two years previously. Kvothe was living a simple life, disguised as an innkeeper by the name of Kote in a small, unimportant village.
2. Growing up, Kvothe was a member of the Edema Ruh, a group of court performers. His father and mother were an actor and a musician, and his mother had the gift of words. One member of their group was an arcanist named Abenthy, who began to teach Kvothe about the power of belief. When he asked Kvothe, "Do you believe in your parents?", how did Kvothe answer?

Answer: "Sometimes. I can't see them right now."

This first lesson was an extremely difficult one to learn, as Abenthy insisted that Kvothe believe that a rock would not fall when let go from his hand. As Kvothe told Chronicler, "I tried and tried. It was the most difficult thing I had ever done. It took me almost all afternoon."

The beginning of the power of the arcana lay in being able to believe something would happen, thus making it do so, in spite of what 'common sense' or 'reality' might dictate - the ability to impose your will on the world.
3. After the Chandrian killed his family and the rest of the troupe, Kvothe eventually found himself living on the street in the city of Tarbean. Near the end of his three years of abject poverty, a storyteller named Skarpi provided him the spark he needed to reclaim his life. How did Kvothe respond when Skarpi said, "Sometimes the story is growing in squalid backstreet bars, Dockside in Tarbean."?

Answer: "There's no good story that doesn't touch the truth."

Kvothe goes on to say, "There's as much truth here as anywhere, I suppose. It's too bad, the world could do with a little less truth and a little more...". Kvothe did not finish, not really knowing what he wanted more of. He did not seem to notice the way Skarpi was looking at him, as if seeing the beginning of a story in him.
4. On the way from Tarbean to Imre, Kvothe met Denna, who was also traveling with the traders. Quickly smitten with her, he nearly kept on the road with her instead of pursuing his plan of attending the University. As they parted, Denna said, "I guess I'll just have to come looking for you, then. I had better go. Watch for me." What was Kvothe's reply?

Answer: "I will. I'll see you where the roads meet."

The measure to which Kvothe has placed Denna on a pedestal can be seen through his narration. After holding a lute for the first time in three years, Kvothe said, "It's beautiful" with a rough voice. Then, as he said to Chronicler, "It was beautiful.

It was the most beautiful thing I had seen in three years. More beautiful than the sight of a spring field after three years of living in that pestilent cesspit of a city. More beautiful than Denna. Almost."
5. As Kvothe performed his entrance examination in front of the University Masters, he was asked, "What are the three most important rules of the chemist?" What was Kvothe's correct answer?

Answer: "Label clearly. Measure twice. Eat elsewhere."

Kvothe was peppered with questions from all the Masters, and in the end he managed not only to prove his worthiness for admission, he also managed to convince them to let him come for free, and they actually gave him three Talents for expenses during his first term.
6. Kvothe had some hurdles to get over during his first term at the University. Master Hemme, holding a grudge against him, brought Kvothe up on charges of malfeasance and unauthorized use of sympathy (a form of magic) leading to injury, after an incident in class. Afterwards, his friend Simmon asked how the hearing had gone. Kvothe replied, "I'm to be whipped and admitted to the Arcanum."

Answer: True

Kvothe was facing serious charges. Unauthorized use of sympathy carried a penalty of being whipped no less than two times, with a maximum of ten lashes. More serious yet was the charge of malfeasance - using magic to deliberately harm another person. For that the penalty was four to fifteen lashes and expulsion from the University.

Kvothe was able to explain the situation, showing how Master Hemme had given him permission in class to do a demonstration. In the end the charges were reduced to reckless use of sympathy causing injury, and Kvothe was sentenced to three lashes. Kvothe also argued that the incident proved his mastery of the basic principles of sympathy, and consequently the Masters granted him admittance to the Arcanum.
7. In his second term at the University, Kvothe found himself searching for ways to make the necessary money to cover his expenses. On top of that, he had indebted himself to pay for his tuition, and for the cost of a new lute. With a plan to find a patron for his musical ability, what comment did he make to his friend Simmon that is similar to a saying you yourself might use?

Answer: "Practice makes the master."

Kvothe had been using all of his spare time to practice his lute in a hidden corner of the University grounds. He had honed his already considerable skill in order to try his hand at earning his 'talent pipes' at the Eolian in Imre. To do so would mark him as a master of his craft, and firmly establish his credibility and his hopes of finding a patron. Kvothe managed it with style, choosing a difficult and heart-rending song called 'The Lay of Sir Savien Traliard.' The song required a soprano voice to accompany his; fortunately, someone in the audience obliged him, coming in at the right moment.

It turned out to be Denna.
8. Much time was spent with Denna in the following months. Then, one time when Kvothe was scheduled to meet her at the Eolian, there was an accident in the Fishery, and he was injured and fell unconscious. After waking and being released from the Medica, Kvothe rushed to the Eolian, too late. Deoch, the owner, looked at him and said, "Lord, boy. You look like you fell off a horse. Where are your shoes?" How did Kvothe answer?

Answer: "A good morning to you too."

It was said sarcastically. Denna was gone, once again. Poor Kvothe was relegated to waiting for her to show up again in her own time.

But not all the results of the incident were bad. Kvothe had saved another student's life and now he had earned the reputation of heroism, on top of all the other feats he had managed in his first few terms at the University.
9. Rumors of an attack on a wedding in Trebon caught Kvothe's attention when he heard the words 'blue fire.' It could only mean the Chandrian! Kvothe made his way to Trebon and found Denna there; she had been a guest at the wedding. Together they went to investigate the site, and Kvothe told her the tale of how his own parents had died. As he quieted, Denna said, "You were a little wild around the eyes there. I don't think I've ever seen you out of sorts before." What did Kvothe say?

Answer: "I'm out of sorts all the time, I just don't show it."

"My point exactly," was Denna's response to Kvothe's explanation.

The Chandrian were the driving force behind Kvothe's actions ever since he heard the tale of their origins from Skarpi in Tarbean. It was the reason he finally decided to go to the University - to learn of the Chandrian from the archives, and learn the skills to one day exact his revenge.
10. After all the time Kvothe had spent with Denna, he came to an understanding that he could only wait for her to come to him, and that pursuing her would only frighten her away. Discussing her one fall afternoon, Simmon observed to Kvothe, "I just don't understand what you see in her. I know she's charming. Fascinating and all of that. But she seems rather cruel." What was Kvothe's response?

Answer: "She is."

Simmon was surprised, asking, "What? No defense for her?"
Kvothe replied, "No. Cruel is a good word for her. But I think you are saying cruel and thinking something else. Denna is not wicked, or mean, or spiteful. She is cruel." He went on to explain some more after a bit, "Denna is a wild thing. Like a hind or a summer storm. If a storm blows down your house, or breaks a tree, you don't say the storm was mean. It was cruel. It acted according to its nature and something unfortunately was hurt. The same is true of Denna."
