Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. D'Artagnan and Rochefort quarrel at Meung.

Rochefort had laughed at D'Artagnan's ridiculous horse, and riled up D'Artagnan's anger. After a quarrel, which Rochefort won, Rochefort stole D'Artagnan's letter of recommendation to M. de Treville, thus delaying him from becoming a musketeer. They remained bitter enemies until the end of the book.
2. D'Artagnan sees Monsieur de Treville.

D'Artagnan went to de Treville's quarters to inquire about becoming a musketeer. As his letter of recommendation had been stolen by Rochefort, de Treville could not make him a musketeer just yet. So D'Artagnan was made a King's Guardsman. Do you still wonder why D'Artagnan hated Rochefort so much? It was the young man's greatest dream to be a musketeer after all.
3. D'Artagnan becomes friends with Athos, Porthos, and Aramis.

After D'Artagnan succeeded in hurting Athos, exposing Porthos's fraud, and embarrassing Aramis, they challenged D'Artagnan to a duel. Just as they were starting the duel, some of the Cardinal's Guards, led by Jussac, came. The Guards wanted to arrest the musketeers because public dueling was prohibited.

The musketeers and D'Artagnan dueled with the guards instead. After their victory, D'Artagnan and the musketeers became great friends.
4. D'Artagnan falls in love with Constance Bonacieux.

Some men employed by the Cardinal were kidnapping Constance. Due to a hole in his floorboards, D'Artagnan could hear everything. He rescued Constance, and voila! love at first sight. However, Constance didn't profess love for him until later in the book.
5. D'Artagnan and his musketeer friends go to London.

The Queen gave her diamond studs to her lover, Duke of Buckingham. The sly Cardinal told the King to tell the Queen to wear the studs to the ball, knowing she wouldn't have them and her affair would be exposed. Constance was the servant of the Queen, and she asked D'Artagnan and his friends to go to London and bring back the studs. What do you think? They were successful!
6. D'Artagnan hears Athos's tale of his marriage to Milady.

At a tavern, D'Artagnan related to Athos his love for Constance, and Athos, hating all women, told him his own sad love story, ending with the fact that no man should love a woman. D'Artagnan disregarded that last bit and kept on loving Constance.
7. D'Artagnan has affairs with Milady and Kitty.

D'Artagnan had an affair with Milady, pretending to be Comte de Wardes, so that he could find out where his true beloved, Constance, was. He got more than he bargained for, that's for sure!

He had an affair with Kitty, Milady's maid, in order to have a way to get information regarding Milady from someone who was close to her.
8. D'Artagnan discovers Milady's fleur-de-lis.

Yeah, this was what started the feud between Milady and D'Artagnan. She was already angry at him for pretending to be her lover, Comte de Wardes, and him finding out about her fleur-de-lis was the cherry on the cake, and voila - an attempted murder from which D'Artagnan barely escaped.
9. D'Artagnan's mistress Constance is poisoned by Milady.

This was Milady's chance of vengeance on D'Artagnan, so she jumped at it and killed his beloved mistress. Naturally, D'Artagnan and his three musketeer friends decided enough was enough and they went to find Milady and promptly executed her by means of the Executioner of Lille.
10. D'Artagnan becomes Lieutenant of the Musketeers.

Cardinal Richelieu was initially going to arrest D'Artagnan, Aramis, Athos, and Porthos, because they carried out an unauthorized execution and therefore were legally assassins. However, he had a change of heart and instead gave D'Artagnan a commission for Lieutenant of the Musketeers. D'Artagnan tried to offer it to his three friends, but they all turned it down and said he was most worthy of it.
