Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Roland chased the man in black across the desert in this series of books written by a "King." Name the series.

Answer: Dark Tower

Stephen King's "The Gunslinger" was the first novel in the series and was published in 1982. This epic followed the trials of Roland Deschain, the last of the gunslingers, as he tried to reach the Dark Tower. The seventh and last of the series, "The Dark Tower," was published in 2004.

The "Dark Tower" series drew inspiration from many sources--"Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came," by Robert Browning, the tale of King Arthur and his knights and Clint Eastwood's "man with no name" western character--to name a few.
2. What was the name of the talking lion in the land of Narnia?

Answer: Aslan

C.S. Lewis wrote the "Chronicles of Narnia" children's fantasy series which included seven books, some of which were made into feature films. Aslan was the King of the Beasts, savior and guardian of Narnia. The Disney movie version, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," was based on the first (1950) and most well known of the novels.
3. Who is/are the subject of the series of books written by Mary Stewart?

Answer: Merlin

There have been five novels to date, beginning with "The Crystal Cave" (1970) and ending with "The Prince and the Pilgrim" (1995). She has written children's literature and poetry as well as other novels.

Father Brown is a character in short stories written by G. K. Chesterton.

Fred Mustard Stewart wrote a series of books known as the "Savage Family Saga." He is also the author of "The Mophisto Waltz."
4. Carlos Castaneda wrote about his studies with a Mexican Indian sorcerer in a series of controversial books. What name does he give this teacher in his writings?

Answer: don Juan

The first book, "The Teachings of Don Juan" (1968) was an account of Carlos's introduction to the world of shamanism as taught by don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian from northern Mexico. The first three books were written while he was an anthropology student at UCLA.

The twelve books in the series follow his studies and experiences with alternate realities and experiments with lucid dreaming. Carlos passed away in 1998.
5. What do they call the "substance" that is the subject of investigation in Philip Pullman's trilogy, "His Dark Materials"?

Answer: Dust

"Dust" is thought to be physical evidence of original sin according to the Magisterium, the governing authority in this children's story that begins with "Northern Lights" (1995) which is known as "The Golden Compass" in the U.S. The first book followed Lyra Belacqua, who was destined to be the hope of the world, as she tried to rescue her friend from the Gobblers. "The Subtle Knife" (1997) and "The Amber Spyglass" (2000) are the other novels in this award-winning series which explores parallel universes, free will and mortality (quite a lot for children's literature!). "The Golden Compass" was adapted for the screen and released as a feature film in 2007.
6. Which memorable phrase is not from the "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"?

Answer: "...when someone asks you if you're a god, you say Yes!"

Douglas Adams was the author of this quirky, clever send-up of science fiction novels. Originally a radio series for the BBC in 1978, the first book of "the trilogy in five parts" was published in 1979. A feature length movie hit theaters in 2005 which starred Sam Rockwell as President Zaphod Beeblebrox, Martin Freeman as Arthur, Mos Def as Ford, Zooey Deschanel as Trillian, and the great Alan Rickman provided the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android. Douglas Adams passed away in 2001.

The "god" quote was from the movie, "The Ghostbusters."
7. Lynne V. Andrews wrote about her experiences studying with shaman women. What is this group of women called?

Answer: Sisterhood of the Shields

In "Medicine Woman," the first book which was published in 1981, Lynne met the first of her teachers while in search of a Native American marriage basket. She has written nineteen books about her experiences and how they have transformed her life.
8. The seals are broken, the Forsaken are free and the Dragon Reborn comes. What amazing series am I describing?

Answer: The Wheel of Time

Rand al Thor is the world's hope and fear as he is all that stands between the Light and the Dark. Aided by Mat Cauthon and Perrin Alberya, who are also t'avern, they struggle to fulfill their destinies. "The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills." Author Robert Jordan (James Oliver Rigney, Jr.) tragically passed away from a rare blood disease in 2007.

He had written eleven books in the series, as well as one prequel ("New Spring") before his passing. The story will be concluded in three more books and written by Brandon Sanderson, who was chosen to finish the series by Robert's widow. Visit dragonmount.com if you'd like to find out more.
9. Anne Rice has written a couple of series, one famously about vampires, the other about a family of witches. What is the surname of this witch family?

Answer: Mayfair

The three novels that follow the Mayfair family are "The Witching Hour," (1990)
"Lasher" (1993) and Taltos (1994). She also incorporated the family into three "Vampire Chronicles" novels published in 2000-2003.
10. What is the main profession of the orangutan in the "Discworld" series?

Answer: Librarian

A spell gone awry changed this wizard into an orangutan (never call him a monkey!). Preferring to stay that way, he became the perfect librarian. He has also served in the night watch. Rincewind, an inept wizard and the reason for his present state, had worked as his assistant. Terry Pratchett, the author, says he took an ancient myth about the world riding on the back of a turtle and "ran with it." There are over thirty novels in the series with many adaptations, including movies. Characters range from trolls, to vampires, to witches and wizards with whole novels dedicated to the banking industry, religion, the postal service, rock and roll, etc.

This is truly one of the funniest series you'll ever read, and don't forget to read the footnotes!
