Marilyn Monroe was born in 1926 in Los Angeles, California with the name Norma Jeane Mortenson. The film opens in 1933 on her 7th birthday and it depicts her relationship with her mother who both loved her and abused her. Even after she adopted the stage name Marilyn Monroe, those close to her often still called her Norma Jeane as she preferred her birth name to her stage name.

After Marilyn Monroe's 7th birthday her mother is shown abusing alcohol and then making irrational decisions. At first she drives a car toward a raging fire and then while giving Marilyn a bath she almost drowns her. Marilyn is able to escape and she runs away, terrified, to her neighbor's home.

They end up taking her in but eventually they take her to an orphanage. Marilyn's mother is declared as unfit to take care of her and she ends up in a psychiatric hospital.

The film "Blonde" depicts Niagara as being Marilyn's breakout role. Much of the publicity for the film depicts Marilyn standing in front of Niagara Falls with the aforementioned headline acknowledging both Marilyn's beauty and the beauty of Niagara Falls. Jane Russell was offered $100,000 for her role in the film, a staggering 20 times what Marilyn was scheduled to make. This inequity prompts Marilyn to refuse to begin filming her parts until her salary is renegotiated. Marilyn jokes that 'Blondes' is in the title implying that she is the selling point and her pay should reflect that. "Blonde" doesn't tell us what Marilyn ends up making for "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" but in an interview years later, Monroe stated that she was indeed paid $500 per week for the film.

In "Blonde" Joe Dimaggio is shown as adoring Marilyn Monroe and telling her he'll do anything for her but then he quickly gets jealous and physically abusive with her. He implores her to take on more serious roles instead of being a sex symbol. Dimaggio explodes after he sees Marilyn's famous skirt raising scene being filmed for the "Seven Year Itch" and they are divorced shortly after.

Marilyn Monroe met the acclaimed author Arthur Miller while she was auditioning for a role for which he was a writer. They had lunch together and she told him how she would modify her character somewhat and he agrees with her recommendations. The two marry and get pregnant but Marilyn eventually miscarries after she suffers a fall at the beach.
