Writer Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) is bigoted, misanthropic, and suffers from OCD. When his gay neighbor Simon is injured during a robbery, Melvin convinces his favorite waitress Carol to accompany him and Simon on a trip to Baltimore to beg Simon's estranged parents for help. Melvin becomes attracted to Carol, and, with Simon's help, is able to finally tell her.
