Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Bride of the Monster" (1955), what is the goal of Dr. Eric Vornoff's experiments?

Answer: to create an atomic super-race

Professor Vladimir Strowski finds Doctor Vornoff and says he wants to bring him "home". Doctor Vornoff responds, "Home? I have no home. ... But I will show the world that I can be its master! I will perfect my own race of people. A race of atomic supermen which will conquer the world!" Nowhere in the film is it disclosed from where Prof. Strowski nor Dr. Vornoff originally came.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Kharis' Curse

"Curse of the Faceless Man" (1958) was the story of a Roman gladiator buried alive by the First Century eruption of Mount Vesuvius who comes back to life. "Curse of the Undead" (1959) is a vampire Western. "Pharaoh's Curse" (1957) tells the story of a reincarnated Egyptian mummy in 1902.

In 1940, Boris Karloff starred in "The Mummy" as an Egyptian mummy named Im-ho-tep. Kharis, an Egyptian prince, appeared as the mummy in "The Mummy's Hand" (1940), and again in "The Mummy's Tomb" (1942), "The Mummy's Ghost" (1944), and "The Mummy's Curse" (1944).

There was no motion picture named "Kharis' Curse".
3. How was "The Colossus of New York" (1958) killed in the end?

Answer: He told his son how to destroy him.

Over time, the mind of Dr. Spensser loses its humanity, being unconnected to a human body, and the Colossus goes on a homicidal rampage. Some small part of his brain remains human and recognizes his young son Billy. There is an on/off switch on the robot's body which it cannot reach by itself.

The Colossus tells Billy how to reach it. Billy flips the switch and the robot tumbles over a railing, falls and is destroyed.
4. Which actor, probably best known as Theodore's father on TV's "Leave it to Beaver," also played in "The Mole People" in 1956?

Answer: Hugh Beaumont

Hugh Beaumont played Ward Cleaver on American television's "Leave it to Beaver" (1957-1963). He acted in all 234 episodes, directed 23 episodes and wrote one. His filmography of horror and science fiction movies is brief: "Lost Continent" (1951); "The Mole People" (1956); "The Human Duplicators" (1965).
5. Were the costumes worn in "Mysterious Island" (1951) all original to the serial/motion picture?

Answer: No

All of the costumes were owned by the Western Costume Company. The hoods worn by the Mercurian soldiers were previously worn in Columbia Pictures' "The Spider's Web" (1938). The shirts worn by the Mercurians were from Universal Pictures' "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (1940). This was a moment in recycling history.
6. Was "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!" (1954) a sequel to "Godzilla" (1954)?

Answer: No

The original Japanese version of "Godzilla" was extensively re-edited (and, in places, re-shot) to produce "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!" in 1956. This Americanized version differed in many respects. It introduced scenes with Raymond Burr as an American journalist doing a sort of play-by-play on the carnage.

The American release is 20 minutes shorter than the Japanese. All of the black humour was excised. Most of the anti-nuclear rhetoric was excised. Godzilla purists regard the American version as a mutilated desecration.
7. What happened to Dr. Douglas Martin in "Killers from Space" (1954) when the jet in which he was a passenger crashed?

Answer: He died.

Dr. Martin, played by Peter Graves, died when the jet aircraft in which he was a passenger (Tar Baby 2) hit the ground. The pilot was killed, also. The aliens retrieved his dead body from the wreckage. Back in their cavern hideaway, they removed his heart, repaired it, and reinserted it in his chest, leaving a fast-healing scar where they sort of welded him shut.

He was found walking back to the Air Force Base in good physical condition except that he had no memory of what happened after the crash and a curious scar on his thorax.
8. For what is Gordon Douglas best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: directing

Gordon Douglas (1907-1993) directed a remarkable variety of films, without reference to any particular genre. In his five-decade career, he directed "Gildersleeve's Ghost" (1944) (a comedy), "Zombies on Broadway" (1945) (also a comedy) and "Them!" (1954) (definitely not a comedy, except to the most warped of viewers).
9. Where is "The Wild Women of Wongo" (1958) set?

Answer: the tropical islands of Wongo and Goona

The film identifies its location as two tropical islands: Wongo and Goona. In which ocean these might be found is not revealed but the clothing worn by the wild women (and men) suggests something tropical. The motion picture was shot at Coral Castle in Homestead, Florida, as well as Silver Springs in Ocala, Florida, and Tahiti Beach in Miami.
10. In "House on Haunted Hill" (1959), how does Frederick Loren dispose of the bodies of his wife Annabelle and Dr. David Trent?

Answer: the vat of acid in the wine cellar

In the basement, there is a wine cellar with bottle racks and casks of wine. There is also an old wine vat, hidden by a trap door, built into the floor. At one time, grapes were fermented in the vat. In the present, the vat is filled with acid that, according to Watson Pritchard, a previous resident used to dispose of his wife.
