"At long last I am able to say a few words of my own. I have never wanted to anything, but until now it has not been possible for me to speak. A few hours ago I my last duty as King and Emperor, and now that I have been by my brother, the Duke of York, my first words must be to declare my allegiance to him. This I do with all my heart. You all know the reasons which have me to renounce the throne. But I want you to that in making up my mind I did not forget the country or the empire, which, as and lately as King, I have for twenty-five years tried to serve. But you must believe me when I tell you that I have found it to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to my duties as King as I would wish to do the help and support of the I love. And I want you to know that the I have made has been mine and mine alone. This was a thing I had to entirely for myself. The other person most nearly concerned has tried up to the last to persuade me to take a course. I have made this, the most decision of my life, only upon the single thought of what would, in the end, be best for all.

This decision has been made less difficult to me by the sure that my brother, with his long training in the public affairs of this country and with his fine , will be able to take my place forthwith without or injury to the life and progress of the empire. And he has one matchless blessing, enjoyed by so many of you, and not on me -- a happy home with his wife and children.

And now, we all have a new King. I wish him and you, his people, and prosperity with all my heart. God bless you all! God save the King!" Edward VIII - December 11, 1936

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

One of the most dramatic episodes in the history of the British monarchy was the voluntary abdication of Edward VIII on December 11, 1936, after 326 days on the throne.

Edward (1896-1972), the eldest son of King George V, in the 1930s fell in love with the American socialite Wallis Warfield Simpson, who had been married twice before, with her second divorce was still in progress. The situation took a new turn when George V died in January 1936 and Edward was acclaimed King Edward VIII, due to be crowned in May 1937.

The situation became more complicated when, in October 1936, Wallis received a decree nisi - a provisional divorce decree - from her husband, making it clear that Edward intended to marry her. The Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin warned the king that this marriage would not be accepted by the people, the royal family, the Parliament, and by members of the Anglican Church, of which he was the head. Under pressure to give up his relationship, Edward presented another solution: a morganatic marriage, with which he would remain King and Wallis would not be Queen, just his consort. This proposal was rejected by the Cabinet Office. King Edward VIII then suggested carrying out a broadcast and appeal to the nation; he prepared a speech explaining his motivation. Baldwin declared that the broadcast would be unconstitutional and that such an event could divide the kingdom.

After these episodes, unable to reconcile his desire to marry Wallis Simpson on the one hand with his role as king on the other, Edward decided to abdicate the throne. He reported that he was going to resign as he had chosen his love for Wallis over the responsibilities of the Crown. On December 10, King Edward VIII signed the abdication document and on the following day, the document was endorsed by Parliament. His brother George took the throne as King George VI and gave Edward the title Duke of Windsor. On the same day, December 11th, Edward made a statement on the BBC radio. At 10:01pm, the edition of the popular Comic Opera program was interrupted by a live broadcast: Edward, now Duke of Windsor, began his farewell speech.
