Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Archie Manning born?

Answer: Drew, Mississippi

Archie was born in the small Mississippi Delta town of Drew. He has lived his adult life and resided in 'The Big Easy' where he played most of his professional career. His wife, Olivia, was raised in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where her family owned and operated Williams General Store where one could find anything from shoes to saddles to soft drinks.
2. What college did Archie attend?

Answer: University of Mississippi

Archie stayed in state and played his college ball at Ole Miss. He became a legend at the school, and the speed limit on campus is still 18 mph, in honor of the number 18 jersey he wore.
3. Archie came very close to dropping out of college after his junior season, which would have changed the course of football history. Why did Archie almost not return for his senior season?

Answer: His father's suicide

This would change Archie's life forever, and he considered dropping out of school to take care of his family. Fortunately, his mother would hear none of that, and he went on to finish his education. The rest is history.
4. Archie met his one true love and the mother of his children while at Ole Miss. However, Olivia had reached prominence in her own right while in college. What honor had she achieved?

Answer: Homecoming Queen

They truly were the perfect college couple. The All-American quarterback and the homecoming queen. Its amazing they've remained as well-grounded as they have.
5. One of the best college football games ever played was between Ole Miss and Alabama in 1969. Alabama won 33-32, but Archie set an SEC record for total yards on offense in that game. How many yards did he account for?

Answer: 540 yards

In the first national prime time broadcast of a college football game, Manning threw for 436 yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for 104 yards, in a 33-32 loss to Alabama.
6. Archie culminated a storied college career with the 1970 Heisman Trophy.

Answer: False

As football stories often go, Archie was a favorite to win the Heisman in 1970 after finishing fourth in Heisman voting in 1969, but a broken arm suffered against Houston would cost Ole Miss its last three games, and Archie to a coveted trophy. Even with the injury, he finished third in the Heisman voting in 1970 behind Jim Plunkett and Joe Theisman.
7. What NFL team drafted Archie in 1971?

Answer: New Orleans Saints

Archie was drafted by the Saints and would spend the next decade as the team's franchise quarterback. He would play for the Oilers and the Vikings in the twilight of his career, but was always "Mr. Saint". Archie's first victory came against the Rams on a quarterback sneak on the last play of the game.
8. Just like his two sons, Archie was the first player taken in the 1971 draft.

Answer: False

Archie would not receive the same distinction as Payton and Eli would have. He was chosen second in the 1971 draft behind Jim Plunkett, who was chosen by the New England Patriots with the first pick.
9. Over his 10 years with the Saints, how many winning seasons did Archie have?

Answer: 0

Manning played for the Saints for 10 full seasons, none of them winning. In 1972, he led the league in pass attempts and completions, and led the National Football Conference in passing yards, though the team's record was only 2-11-1.
10. Archie was named NFC Player of the Year in 1978. Although this is an annual award, why is Archie's recognition unique among all other recipients?

Answer: He was the first player from a losing team to receive the honor

In 1978, Archie was named the NFC Player Of The Year after leading the Saints to a 7-9 record. No other player from a losing team had received this honor when Archie won it. Archie was also selected to the Pro Bowl in 1978 and 1979. Not a usual occurrence for a player who never played in a playoff game.
