Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Abbey

Abbey, the first corner after the start, is a right-hander and taken flat out. The name Abbey is taken from the ancient remains of Luffield Abbey, found close to this corner.

During the race, the cars emerge from Club corner and race along the Hamilton Straight into Abbey. Either of the two grandstands on the Hamilton Straight or at Abbey corner are fantastic places to watch the action.
2. Luffield

Luffield is a very long right-hander but quite slow; it never seems to stop. F1 cars only reach speeds of around 55 mph here, but it does give drivers the chance of an overtake. Most of the drivers use the third gear here and build up the speed for the next corner of Woodcote.
3. Woodcote

This is a great place to watch! After Luffield, the cars reach the superfast kink. Formula One cars reach their top speed at this part of the track. Drivers try not to scrub off speed at this corner and aim to keep it smooth. A small amount of time can be spent here if you get the perfect line through the corner.

Woodcote Park, an RAC-owned club in Surrey, is the inspiration for the name Woodcote.
4. Copse

Drivers will be in top gear here, reaching speeds of 180 mph on one of the fastest corners on the circuit. This sweeping corner will test the drivers; the downforce will be working overtime here.

Copse is also a great place to sit in the grandstands. Around Silverstone, the area has green fields and dense woodland, known as copses; the name derives from this area.
5. Maggotts

Maggotts is probably the best-known corner in the world of motor racing. This is the fastest corner at Silverstone, and it is taken flat out. This is the start of a combination of three corners: Maggotts, Becketts, and Chapel. The exit speeds from these corners are important to get right as they build up the speed for the very long Hangar Straight.

Maggotts is named after nearby Maggot Moor. Becketts and Chapel are named for a medieval chapel dedicated to the memory of the murdered Archbishop of Canterbury, St. Thomas à Becket, that once stood on the site.
6. Becketts

Here, you'll see the cars almost flat out! Maybe a slight lift. From here, you can see them taking Maggotts, Becketts, and Chapel, then hammering towards the Hangar Straight.

This is one of the best places to be in a grandstand as lots of action can be seen from here.
7. Chapel

Chapel is the third part of the complex on this side of the track. From this point, you can see Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel. Not much overtaking here, but the cars enter the sequence of corners travelling at around 190 mph and exit Chapel at around 160 mph, which really does show you how an F1 car performs.
8. Stowe

What a fantastic place to view these F1 cars! These incredible machines arrive here from the very fast Hangar Straight. Drivers start to brake hard at nearly 200mph just before Stowe, which is a very fast right-hander.

Stowe corner was named after a local school which lies close to the complex, just south of the circuit.
9. Vale

After the very fast Stowe corner, the cars reach the left-right chicane of Vale corner. Here the circuit is quite tight and slow, but is a good place to overtake. It's then quite a short run to Club.

This area of the circuit features the massive Vale Grandstand, offering some of the best views of the action.
10. Club

One of the best places to sit and watch the race. From here, you can see Hamilton Straight, Vale, the exit of Stowe, and the pit area. The club is the last corner on the circuit. Club Corner is named in honour of the RAC's clubhouse in Pall Mall, London.
