Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season, the two initial tribes were divided by which means?

Answer: Pre-selection

Twenty past winners of "Survivor", claiming the title of Sole Survivor and the million dollar prize, arrived on the beach at the start of this landmark season and toasted the game with a glass of champagne before digging right into matters. Although they arrived divided by gender, they were given buffs and divided onto two evenly-split teams (five men and five women). Additionally, they were informed that Edge of Extinction would be in play this season, giving everyone a shot at returning to the game if they could persevere. Finally, they were made aware of the one big plus-- the winner of "Winners at War" would take home $2,000,000 USD instead of the typical one million dollar prize.

With that, the tribes jumped into their first challenge for flint, rice, and Immunity. No time to waste.
2. Introduced to this season was which unique currency, used to buy advantages throughout the game?

Answer: Fire Tokens

Each castaway was given one Fire Token at the start of the game, and this unique currency shifted around throughout the season. Every time a castaway was eliminated, they had to bequeath their Fire Tokens to another player still in the running. Fortunately, players could collect Fire Tokens both on and off the Edge of Extinction, using them to purchase luxuries and advantages at their discretion.

This could be especially effective on the Edge of Extinction, since these advantages could lead them to reenter the game.

As such, many Edge players used collected advantages to their benefit, selling them off to still-active players in an effort to get a leg up. These could be spent until the end of Day 34.
3. On Day 12, the players were shuffled into new tribes. What was the name of the new tribe, donning green buffs, to emerge from this?

Answer: Sele

All fifteen remaining players (not sent to Edge thus far) were brought back to the starting island and told to drop their buffs. Once Jeff allowed the players to pick new buffs at random, he let them know that they would be dividing out onto three new tribes of five, truly mixing them up into uneven groupings.

But what unfolded was unexpected across the board. After Yara eliminated Boston Rob, destroying a Sele majority, the next challenge resulted in both the new Dakal and Sele heading to separate Tribal Councils. Parvati was sent out at the first, removing her purchased Idol Nullifier from the game, and Sandra was sent packing soon after in a surprise Idol blindside put forth by Denise.
4. Who was the only player to raise their flag on the Edge of Extinction?

Answer: Sandra

After an immediate betrayal at Tribal Council, Sandra met up with the other eliminated castaways at the Edge of Extinction and expressed her disinterest in continuing in the game, knowing that any attempt at regaining entry to the competition via a demanding challenge would not be a possibility for her.

As such, she became the first and only person in the season to pull the white flag, asking for her removal from the Edge and her abandonment of the jury. At the time, Sandra had 116 days 'on the island' playing the game of "Survivor".
5. On Day 19, who became the first castaway to return from the Edge of Extinction?

Answer: Tyson

On Day 19, the eight castaways still waiting at the Edge of Extinction headed to the challenge beach and competed for the chance to reenter the game, joining the newly-merged tribe for the next stage of the game. Five castaways purchased advantages using their Fire Tokens, but in the end, Tyson managed to keep at the front of the group, winning out over Rob to return to the game. Tyson was eliminated from the game on Day 11 (being the fifth to be sent to the Edge).

He would be eliminated again on Day 25.
6. Day 19 saw the merge take place, uniting twelve players under one flag. The new tribe's name was Koru. What colour did they wear?

Answer: Black

Once Tyson won the Edge of Extinction return challenge on Day 19, he joined together with the other eleven castaways, merging on Sele Beach with black buffs. As soon as this occurred, the competitors scrambled, reestablishing alliances to ensure that they could survive and outlast with some of the most notable game players in the show's history. Due in part to the paranoia experienced around camp, many of the earliest votes were executed with sizeable majorities-- Wendell and Adam, the earliest of these, emerged as a result of players avoiding stepping out of line.
7. On Day 24, the castaways had a visit from their loved ones. Unlike in previous seasons, what happened?

Answer: No challenge was held

Ten castaways showed up to the challenge beach on Day 24 and discovered that they had been set up for an early visit from their loved ones, and this season things were done a bit differently. Not only did the contestants receive visits from groups of family members (in some cases, spouses, all of their children, etc.), but there was no challenge to accompany the arrivals. Instead, all of the castaways went back to their beach to spend the day with their guests.

In addition, and to the shock of the eliminated players, everyone on the Edge of Extinction also received their visits, with all of their loved ones coming in by boat to spend the day.
8. During the back half of the season, twelve different players were part of the merged tribe. How many of those players competed during the first twenty seasons of "Survivor" ("Heroes vs. Villains" or earlier)?

Answer: One

In a surprise to most players, and as it was discussed during the season, there was a clear concern wherein 'old school' and 'new school players seemed to split at a clear divide, notably because old school players from the first twenty seasons were seen as strong threats due to their reputations though their capabilities with new school rules and strategies could be lacking. What resulted was a pre-merge boot order featuring nine players, only one of which debuted after "Heroes vs. Villains" (Natalie).

When the merge finally occurred on Day 19, only Tyson, who returned from the first Edge of Extinction Challenge, had played in any of those earlier seasons, and even then, he didn't win until "Blood vs. Water".
9. Who was the final tribe member to return from the Edge of Extinction?

Answer: Natalie

Mirroring her sister's game in "San Juan Del Sur", Natalie was eliminated first of the lot, heading to the Edge of Extinction on Day 2 and playing on the fringe of the game. Though she had a chance to rejoin at the merge, she instead saw her reentry towards the very end of the game, winning the final Edge of Extinction Challenge on Day 35, leaving the jury, and playing as part of the final six. With a run not unlike Chris Underwood's in the "Edge of Extinction" season, it would propel her to the final Tribal Council, allowing her to break a record, spending the longest time on the Edge of any player in "Survivor" history.
10. Who was the Sole Survivor of "Winners at War"?

Answer: Tony

After thirty-nine days, the Final Tribal Council resulted in a single winner of the season when sixteen jury members cast their votes for either Tony, Natalie, or Michelle. Despite Natalie making a strong return from the Edge of Extinction (a la Chris Underwood) and holding onto her resilience in front of a jury she lived through Edge alongside, Tony's unmatched strategic game, coupled with his challenge dominance post-merge, allowed him to take the majority of the votes, becoming the second two-time winner of "Survivor" and the recipient of a two million dollar prize, a feat he managed without receiving a single vote during any prior Tribal Council despite being a known threat. Tony received twelve of the sixteen votes with Natalie receiving four and Michelle receiving none.
