Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams headed from France to Spain in Leg 8 with the implication that they would be facing a Mega-Leg. To where did they fly?

Answer: Málaga

Leaving the south of France at the start of Leg 8, teams were flown five hundred miles southwest to the south of Spain and the coastal city of Málaga where they departed in two groups leaving fifteen minutes apart from one another. To begin this Mega-Leg, teams had to proceed on foot through the city, starting from the Pit Start at Castillo de Gibralfaro and descending down to the Plaza de la Merced.
2. The first Road Block teams encountered in Spain (in Leg 8) had them recreating an artwork made by what famous painter?

Answer: Pablo Picasso

Reaching the Plaza de la Merced teams ripped open their first Road Block of the Mega-Leg and selected the team member who was ready to be 'a master of pieces'. The hint would have to clue them in to the fact that they would need to spend time recreating Pablo Picasso's artwork "Three Musicians", but to do that they needed to pick a station and, using six pieces of painted glass, reassemble the piece by laying them overtop one another in the correct order. Once correctly made, they would receive their next clue. Claire, Michelle, Aubrey, Marcus, and Emily completed this task.
3. Teams had the opportunity to ride which of these modes of transportation along the waters of the Mediterranean during the Mega-Leg in Spain?

Answer: Bicycles

Once teams pieced out their Road Block tasks in Málaga they were required to proceed on foot to Málaga Cathedral. There, they could collect a pair of bikes and ride them through the city to the waterfront. The next clue box would await teams at the Centre Pompidou near the Port of Málaga.

They would know if they were in the right spot if they located El Cubo, a colourful glass and steel art fixture.
4. Only one team chose to complete the 'Sailboat Supply' Detour option when they encountered their first Mega-Leg Detour in Spain. Which team was it?

Answer: Luis and Michelle

Reaching El Cubo would allow teams to collect their first Detour options and provide them the opportunity to pick to their strengths. Only Luis and Michelle chose 'Sailboat Supply' which had them pedalling to Playa de El Palo to make a delivery. Collecting a cooler full of fresh ice, they had to blow up an inflatable paddle board and transport it and several lifejackets to a boat moored offshore...standing up, of course. If they returned the empty cooler they could trade it for their next clue.
5. In the 'Fish Fry' Detour task, racers had to make which traditional Spanish dish?

Answer: Espetos

For the four teams completing 'Fish Fry' had to ride out and visit the Playa de El Palo as well, but while the other task took them out on the water, this one had them staying on the beach to cook a traditional meal of espetos. For this, teams needed to skewer eighteen fish in three groups of six and then season and cook them on an open flame in a boat filled with sand. If they made it to the chef's approval they'd keep racing.
6. Teams were directed to the town of Ronda during the back half of the Mega-Leg, but what were they given to indicate that fact?

Answer: A postcard

Once racers wrapped up their Detours on the Málaga waterfront they were handed a postcard bearing an image of Ronda's famous bridge, Puente Nuevo. All teams needed to do was get there, driving themselves west in provided convertibles to locate a tour guide who would provide them with their next clue.

When they reached the bridge, the person with their clue in-hand would be waving an Andalusian flag.
7. The 'Bend over Backwards' Detour task that teams encountered in Ronda was finished by how many teams

Answer: One

Reaching Puente Nuevo, teams opened their second Detour task of the Mega-Leg and made their selection. Only Marcus and Michael completed the 'Bend over Backwards' which sent them to the Arab Baths of Ronda. For this challenge, the pair had to use bricks to construct a strong Moorish arch, working together to not only fully complete the structure but ensure that it could stand on its own without any additional support. If they could make a solid arch, they could get their next clue.
8. Teams finishing the 'Dress for Success' Detour task in Ronda had to accessorize which of these in preparation for a flamenco dance?

Answer: Themselves

Racers who didn't want to chance a poor build could instead use their powers of observation, visiting the El Casino & Hispania Flamenco for the 'Dress for Success' Detour option. In this challenge, all teams excluding Marcus and Michael needed to watch a flamenco dancer on-stage and, watching her clothing, identify her accessories.

Then, heading to a nearby shop, they needed to find matching accessories to outfit their own selected dancer to prepare her for the performance. If they could get all of the accessories right, they would receive their next clue.
9. Racers completing the Road Block beneath Puente Nuevo were required to recall the flag of which of these?

Answer: Andalusia

Racing out from the Detour, teams proceeded to Paseo de Kazunori Yamauchi to find a woodcarver who would hand over their Road Block clue. The task would test their mettle and memory as the selected racers (Michelle, Aubrey, Claire, Emily, and Michael) would have to head beneath Puente Nuevo to walk a tightrope over El Tajo gorge, a height of three hundred feet above the ground. Once the participants crossed the harrowing trip to the other side they would need to identify the flag held by the tour guide found on the bridge earlier in the leg (specifically the Andalusian flag). If they did so correctly they could claim the envelope and the clue inside; if wrong, they'd try crossing again.
10. Which team was eliminated at the end of the Mega-Leg in Spain?

Answer: Marcus and Michael

Finishing the Road Block at Puente Nuevo, racers were told to race on foot to Phil and the mat between Ernest and Orson. These directions would lead racers to the city gardens at the Mirador de Ronda where teams could vie to avoid elimination. Luis and Michelle reclaimed the pole position to take enough Expedia Reward Points for a five-night trip for two to Tokyo, Japan.

After slipping behind in Málaga, Marcus and Michael were unable to navigate to the rest of the pack in Ronda and the pair were eliminated from the race.
