Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the original name of "Pac-Man"?

Answer: Puck Man

The creator of "Puck Man" ultimately changed the name to "Pac-Man" because he feared some ridiculous teens might confuse "puck" with a, uh, swear word. The title "Puck Man" was derived from the Japanese for gobbling something up, "paku paku taberu".
2. What is the nickname of the orange ghost?

Answer: Clyde

Unlike the other ghosts, Clyde has no strategy for catching Pac-Man. He cowardly switches between chasing Pac-Man and then fleeing Pac-Man. Clyde's official name is Pokey.

The red ghost's official name is Shadow, and its nickname is Blinky. The pink ghost's official name is Speedy and its nickname is Pinky.
3. From which cartoon did Toru Iwatani get the idea for energizers (power pellets)?

Answer: Popeye the Sailor

Popeye the Sailor gets temporary strength after eating spinach, so this inspired Iwatani to create the concept of power pellets, which gives Pac-Man temporary power. Pac-Man's temporary power means that he has an allocated amount of time to eat ghosts without being harmed.
4. We all know that part of the inspiration for Pac-Man's character came from a pizza with a slice missing, but the other part of the inspiration came from the Japanese character for "mouth", here depicted, 口. What's it called?

Answer: Kuchi

Toru Iwatani, the creator of "Pac-Man", said that the inspiration for the character's shape came from a pizza with a slice missing, but in 1986 he revealed that the Japanese character for "mouth" (口) had a part in Pac-Man's development. Iwatani rounded out and simplified the Japanese character, and our beloved Mr Pac-Man was born!
5. What is the nickname of the cyan/blue/teal ghost?

Answer: Inky

Inky has the same strategy as Pinky: he positions himself in front of Pac-Man to close off any chance of escape. Inky's official name is Bashful. Inky, solely, was named the seventh greatest game villain in 2013 by the Guinness World Records.
6. All the answer options are part of the game, but which option is the one that completes levels?

Answer: To eat all the dots

When Mr Pac-Man eats all the dots in the maze, you advance to the next level! If a ghost catches you before all the dots are eaten, the level restarts. This is why you need to avoid the ghosts at all costs; it's difficult.
7. When Pac-Man eats a power pellet, the ghosts all change into one colour and you have to opportunity to eat them and earn points. What colour do they turn into?

Answer: Blue

When this happens to the ghosts, they wander blankly through the maze, and Pac-Man has the opportunity to eat them to earn bonus points. When a ghost is eaten, it ends up in the middle of the maze and regenerates back into the maze as normal, trying to eat you. Any un-eaten ghosts left will flash white before turning back to normal. Enough triumph, Sir Pac-Man, you gotta run now!
8. The president of the company which created "Pac-Man", Masaya Nakamura, wanted all four ghosts to be the same colour. Which colour?

Answer: Red

Toru Iwatani, a young employee of Namco and in charge of the development of "Pac-Man", disagreed with Nakamura and insisted each ghost be unique. The rest of the company unanimously voted for Iwatani's idea and so it was decided. I'm sure most players, like myself, are happier with unique villains.
9. What is the maximum number of lives you can have at a time?

Answer: Three

You get three lives during each level. Each time a ghost eats Pac-Man, a life is lost and the level restarts. When all three lives run out, you must wait for them to regenerate before you attempt the level again.
10. What is the purpose of the fruits?

Answer: Eating them earns you more points

The other three incorrect options are NOT at all true. After the player eats a certain amount of dots, a fruit will appear under the box in the center of the screen. This fruit may then be eaten to gain extra points. A cherry is worth 100 points; a strawberry is 300 points; an orange, 500 points; an apple, 700 points; a melon, 1000 points; and a banana is worth 5000 points.
