Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

NATO's history begins in the post-World War II era with efforts to contain the Soviet Union. The Treaty of Dunkirk (1947) laid the foundations that evolved into the Treaty of Brussels (1948). The signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949 was a pivotal moment in history, formalising the creation of NATO.

The treaty brought together nations, including the United States and Canada, with a shared commitment to mutual defence against armed attack. The treaty signified a strategic alliance to counter the perceived threat of Soviet expansion in Europe. Lord Ismay, NATO's first Secretary General, succinctly outlined the organisation's aims as "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in and the Germans down". The signing ceremony solidified the framework for collective security and cooperation among member states, laying the foundations for NATO's role in shaping global geopolitics.

NATO has led to the standardisation of military practices and technology among member countries, promoting cooperation and interoperability. Standardisation agreements (STANAG) and common terminology improved coordination and influenced practices such as the adoption of the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge and the introduction of standardised aircraft signals.

The founding members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States. In the years that followed, several countries joined NATO sometimes after intense debates. The member states mentioned in this quiz were Greece and Turkey (both joined in 1952), Germany (joined as West Germany in 1955, while East Germany became part of NATO after the reunification of Germany in 1990), Spain (1982), Hungary (1999) and Finland (2023).
