Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Leprechauns are only found in Ireland.

Answer: True

Where else would a Leprechaun live if not in Ireland! Leprechauns are very wily, and they can vanish in the twinkling of an eye. This is why it is impossible to trick a Leprechaun out of either his pot of gold or magic shilling. Leprechauns have two great loves: drinking whiskey and smoking tobacco.

They are either cheerful and happy or very sullen. A Leprechaun's mood depends on how much whiskey he has drunk. They are shoemakers for the Faeries and can usually be found working on a shoe. Leprechauns range in height from about six inches to two feet tall.

A Leprechaun wears a three-cornered hat, stockings of pale blue, a bright green vest and coat with shiny buttons, and high-heeled shoes with enoromous silver buckles. They are also known as Cluricaune, Lurican, Lurikeen, and Lurigadaun, depending on part of Ireland you are in.

The preferred habitat for Leprechauns is amid castle ruins and under tree roots.
2. Once upon a time all farmhouses in Scotland had a house sprite called a Brownie in residence. A contented Brownie did everything from helping to brew beer to doing household chores. Which of the following is a sure way of offending a Brownie so badly that it will leave and never return?

Answer: Offering new clothes to Brownie will run it off.

There are both Scottish Lowland Brownies and Scottish Highland Brownies. It is highly improbable, though certainly not impossible, to find an English Brownie. Happy Brownies were very helpful and do all manners of work around and inside the house. They are especially helpful in brewing beer. If a Brownie is not happy, it will make everyone miserable. Brownies love all things sweet, and it also enjoys cream, brown bread, hot cakes and honey.

It offends Brownies to be treated with too much kindness. Giving new clothes to a Brownie will offend it so badly that it will immediately leave and never return. Brownies either wear nothing at all or a simple rag of coarse wool, and they are about twenty inches tall. Since high taxes on malt has stopped most farmers from brewing their own beer, most Brownies are unemployed.

They now live in only the remotest villages. The most common English house sprites are called Hobgoblins.
3. Nightmares are caused by Night-Elves that climb onto the chest or back of a sleeper and ride them like a horse. Which of the following is NOT a way to rid a house of Night-Elves?

Answer: Leaving a slice of old fruitcake by the bed

There are many, many ways of getting rid of Night-Elves. Some other ways to rid a house of a Night-Elf are: putting a sock under the bed, hanging a cross over the door, and hanging mistletoe over the bed. Setting a difficult task for the Night-Elf, such as strewing birdseed all over the floor then commanding the Night-Elf to pick it all up, works as well. Telling a Night-Elf its name is a very effective way of running it off. Night-Elves are known by many names.

Some of them are: Alp, Cinciut, Quaeldrytterinde, and Toggeli, to name a few.

Although leaving an old slice of fruitcake by the bed would probably run me off, it does not deter Night-Elves.
4. Portunes, the oldest and one of the smallest of English elves, are now thought to be extinct.

Answer: True

Yes, sadly, Portunes have not been spotted in several centuries and are thought to be extinct. Portunes were the oldest of all the English elves. They stood only half an inch to two inches tall, and Portunes brought good luck to the farmhouses they resided in.

It is said that Portunes came to England by way of France. Playing harmless tricks on travellers was one of their favorite pasttimes.
5. Italy's Servan, like the Scottish Brownie, is a house sprite or elf. Which of the following pranks does the Servan NOT delight in playing on the people it lives with?

Answer: They love to roam hallways at night rattling chains and groaning.

Servan are house sprites that live in Switzerland and Italy. They can be quite helpful, but Servan love to play pranks on the family it resides with. Their favorite indoor pranks are yanking off bedcovers and hiding small objects like pens, thimbles, and keys. Servan have been known to leave horses stranded on top of the roof and tie knots in cows' tails. Servan always wear red, stand about two-feet tall, and have jolly faces. Servan do not walk hallways at night groaning and rattling chains. This is the occupation of a Ghost.
6. What is the only time that an Asrai, England's beautiful, deep water Faerie, can take shape and be visible to a human?

Answer: Asrai only take shape during a full-moon night.

The Asrai live only in deep waters. Once every century, an Asrai rises to the surface to gaze at the full-moon. It is the moonlight that gives the Asrai shape, and the slightest touch of sunlight will kill an Asrai immediately. Asrai are from two to four feet high and are said to be very beautiful. Asrai are found in England and can live for several centuries.
7. Loud rapping and knocking sounds, dishes rattling in the cupboard, and rocks hitting the roof are indications that a house has a resident Poltersprite.

Answer: True

It has become the fashion to blame knocking and rapping sounds on Poltergeists, but this can also mean that a Poltersprite has moved in. Poltersprites can be very helpful around the house and are harmless unless offended. Poltersprites just plain love to make noise.

They will toss rocks on top of roofs, open and close doors with creaky hinges, and rattle dishes and silverware. Poltersprites are known by many names. Some of them are: Knocky Bah, Poppele, and Bubak.
8. Which of the following elves is NOT found in England?

Answer: Bwbach

A Bwbach or Bwca is a Welsh house sprite and is a close relative of a Brownie. Like all house sprites, a happy and contented Bwbach is very helpful and will keep the household running smoothly. An offended or humiliated Bwbach will create all kinds of havoc. Korred are Dolmen Elves and are found living under dolmen (standing stones) in England and other European countries. Pixies are about a foot tall, and unlike Hobgoblins, are field sprites. Pixies are very mischievous, but they will lend a helping hand on occasion. Like the Brownie, a Pixie will leave if offered clothes. All these elves have dark skin and are called Dusky Elves.
9. Why are the Korred also known as Dolmen Elves?

Answer: They are found near standing stones or dolmen.

A dolmen is a prehistoric megalith usually having two upright stones and a capstone. England's beautiful Stonehenge is one of the best known examples of dolmen or standing stones. The dolmen of Stonehenge were carried on the backs of, and set in place by, an ancient race of dwarves called the Korred.

A Korred is one of the Dusky Elves. Korreds have cats' claws instead of fingers, and they have hooves like a goat instead of feet. The Korred love dancing, but men who join in their dances can not stop until they drop dead. Dolmen elves range in height from one to three feet. Cornish dolmen elves are called Spriggans. French standing stone elves are called Crions.

The Korred originally lived either under the standing stones they loved or in caverns.

There is no such county in England as Dolmen.
10. What is the best way for a family to rid itself of a Changeling?

Answer: Make it reveal its age

The Quiet Folk are a gentle and peaceful type of dwarf. They have lived underground and mined for gems and precious metals for thousands of years. This has made them wealthy beyond imagining. When one of the Quiet Folk becomes too ancient to work as a miner, it is traded for a human child.

This ancient dwarf is called a Changeling. The best way to get rid of a Changeling is do something to make it reveal its ancient age. One way of doing this is to pretend to brew beer in an eggshell. This will so amaze it that the Changeling will admit never seeing anything like that in all its long years.

It will then have to leave. Treating a Changeling with love or understanding will never work. That will only make the Changeling want to stay all the more. Feeding it seven times seven (forty-nine) fish at sunset certainly will not work, because I made that up myself. Removing all tallow candles is a way to rid a room of a Night-Elf, but this method does not work on Changelings. I hope you had fun taking my quiz on the Wee Folk. Thank you.
