Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color is the bottom stripe of the American flag?

Answer: red

13 stripes and red on the top and bottom. Red stands for the blood shed by American soldiers. George Washington originally wanted 6-pointed stars. Betsy Ross said that 5-pointed stars would be much easier to make, and therefore make mass production more efficient. George was apparently won over and allowed the 5-pointed star.
2. DON'T CHEAT--Is the "d" in the word "disc" capitalized on your CD drive?

Answer: No

The compact disc was introduced in 1982.
3. How long do you think an average shoestring is?

Answer: 45 inches

Amazingly, most low-top shoes use a 45 inch shoestring. A boot will use one upwards of 60 inches, thats five feet! (I used to work at Foot Locker).
4. Nickels are made primarily out of copper and what other metal?

Answer: nickel

Hope you got that one right... In order to conserve the metal, the "war nickels" from 1938 to 1942 were made out of only 25% nickel. From 1942 to 1945, as the war became more intense, there was NO nickel in the composition of the coin. Today's nickel is mostly nickel.
5. New Hampshire lies to the west of Vermont.

Answer: False

I only know because I looked at a map It lies to the east of Vermont. New Hampshire has the nation's longest covered bridge, shortest coastline, and the oldest bar, which opened 13 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Vermont's capital, Montpelier, is the smallest of all U.S. capitals, and is the only capital without a McDonalds.

After the original 13 colonies, Vermont was the first state admitted to the union.
6. Without looking, what number on a standard clock is directly opposite (180 degrees from) the 10?

Answer: 4

Sorry about that one. I had to throw a ridiculously easy one in here.
7. On a package of M&Ms, is there an apostrophe between the "M&M" and the "s?"

Answer: Yes

M&M stands for Mars and Murrie, the founders of the company. There are over 400 million M&Ms produced every day. There are actual set percentages for the production of the different colors. 30% of all of them are brown, while only 10% are green or orange. And, no matter what you think, the different colors all taste exactly the same. (Funny, I could swear the green ones taste better).
8. Which of the following products is available in metric quantities in American stores?

Answer: Soft drinks

For some reason, we Americans use the liter to measure large bottles of soft drinks. The world consumes 50 billion pounds of soft-drink chemicals every year. That is an enormous market.
9. A scorpion has eight legs.

Answer: True

They are an arachnid-like spiders. If you put pure alcohol on a scorpion's back, it will sting itself to death.
10. Without looking, do you remember what day of the week the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2001?

Answer: Tuesday

Because of the attacks, I got relocated to a U.S.A.F. fighter squadron in Italy...
