An equation contains at least one unknown variable and has the equal sign (=). "Quadratic" comes from the Latin "quadratus" which means "square". The equation ax^2 + bx + c = 0 is a quadratic equation where x (the unknown) is elevated to the second power (or square) and a, b, c are the constants. It is always equal to zero. In a "quadratic" with real coefficients the unknown can have two roots if the discriminant (b^2 - 4ac) is positive, only one if the discriminant is zero, and no real root if the discriminant is negative. However with a negative discriminant, the roots can be "complex". Equations are classified by degree, depending on the exponent of the variable. The exponent of x in a quadratic equation is always 2. Equations can be "cubic" (x^3), "quartic" (x^4) and so on. A first degree equation has x to the first power, ie: its exponent is 1, so we don't write it. Example: x + 5 = 14. The Pythagorean Theorem is: a^2 + b^2 = c^2 (in a right triangle, the area of the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares of the other two sides). It was developed by the Greek mathematician Pythagoras of Samos.

The song 'Eleanor Rigby' appeared on the Beatles album, 'Revolver'. Paul McCartney stated that he took the name of Rigby, from the name of a store. The actress Eleanor Bron provided the inspiration for the name of Eleanor. Bron did actually appear in the 1965 Beatles movie 'Help' playing the part of Ahme alongside Victor Spinetti who played Professor Foot. Cynics amongst us would argue that the name came from a gravestone in St Peter's Churchyard in Woolton, England. Woolton is a local place where Lennon and McCartney first met. Apparently the Beatles didn't play a single note on the track, Eleanor Rigby, as they hired string players for the song.

Magnus Magnusson (Magnus Sigursteinnson) presented 'Mastermind', which ran on BBC1 between 1972 to 1997. Contestants were invited to sit alone in the famous black leather chair and answer rapid-fire questions, from Magnusson, for two minutes. The first round consisted of a specialist subject, chosen by the contestant. The final round was on general knowledge. Viewers were attracted to the show as the auditorium was darkened whilst the player was spotlighted. Previous winners of the Mastermind, cut-glass trophy, were taxi-driver Fred Housego (1980) and London Underground train driver Christopher Hughes (1983). Magnus was born in Iceland and moved to Scotland when he was only one-year old. Alas, Magnus died recently on January 7, 2007 and lost his battle with pancreatic cancer, at the age of 77 years old. One can only conclude this passage using Magnusson's catchphrase of "I've started so I'll finish".

The Blue Ridge Mountains are located in eastern America and extend between West Virginia into northern Georgia. They also are located in parts of Virginia and North Carolina and are part of the Appalachian Mountains. The Blue Ridge Mountains were made famous in the song 'Trail of the Lonesome Pine' sang by Laurel and Hardy in the movie 'Way Out West' in 1937. 'In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia on the trail of the lonesome pine in the pale moonshine our hearts entwine where she carves her name and I carve mine Oh June, like the mountains are blue like the pine, I'm so lonesome for you.' Red Square houses the Kremlin, the GUM department store (Russia's most famous shopping mall) and the multicoloured domes of St Basil's Cathedral which was built between 1555 to 1561. This commemorated Ivan the Terrible's victory over the Mongols at the Tatar state of Kazan in East European Russia.

Sid James (Sidney Joel Cohen) was born on the 6th May, 1913 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Both of his parents were in showbusiness which helped him to become an accomplished singer and dancer. He moved to London on Christmas Day in 1946. He had worked as a hairdresser, diamond polisher and became an amateur boxer, which along with nature, had given him battered features and a crumpled face. His television credits included 'Hancock's Half Hour' (1956-59) and 'Bless This House'(1971-75). Sid had heart problems and suffered a fatal second heart attack on the opening night of 'The Mating Season' at the Sunderland Empire. He died on the 26th April, 1976 in the ambulance on the way to hospital. From the 'Carry On' cast, one would have thought six feet seven inches tall Bernard Bresslaw would have been the boxer. He was born on the 25th February, 1934 in Stepney, in London's East End.
