Djibouti Trivia Questions

1. There is a triangle on the flag of Djibouti. What kind of triangle is it?

From Quiz
Shake Djibouti

Answer: Equilateral

The flag of Djibouti has two equal bands of color, one blue and one green, vertically on the flag. There is a white triangle on the left, however. Inside the white triangle is a red star. A scalene triangle has no equal sides, an equilateral triangle has all three equal sides, and a right triangle has a right angle in it. It is interesting to note that a right triangle can also be both a scalene or an isosceles triangle, but the triangle on the Djibouti flag is NOT a right triangle.

2. The star on the Djibouti flag represents the five locations in which Somalis live. It is also red in color. What does the red represent?

From Quiz Shake Djibouti

Answer: Unity

There is a blue band of color on the Djibouti flag, which represents the sky as well as the sea. The green band of color represents the earth. On the left of the flag, there is a white triangle. The white represents peace. Inside is the red star, which represents unity between the five locations. These locations include British Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, French Somaliland, Ogaden, and the Northern Frontier District.

3. Due to its location in northeastern Africa, Djibouti is close to the Middle East. What strait separates Djibouti and Yemen?

From Quiz Djibouti

Answer: Bab el Mandeb

The Bab el Mandeb, or Gate of Tears, is a strait that connects the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The name comes from the legends of the difficulty of navigating through its waters. Since Bab el Mandeb is one leg of the route from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, it is used mostly for transport and shipping.

4. Djibouti came under French rule until 1977, when it gained its independence. Because of Djibouti's cultural influences, what is its currency?

From Quiz Shake Djibouti

Answer: Franc

Djibouti gained independence from France on June 27, 1977. However gaining independence did not mean that French influences would all disappear. Djibouti kept many French customs and items, including using the franc as its currency. One Djiboutian Franc is split into 100 centimes. Djibouti keeps close ties with France; in fact, they are close allies, and trade together.

5. What volcano serves as Djibouti's highest point?

From Quiz Djibouti

Answer: Mousa Ali

Mousa Ali is a volcano on the border of Djibouti and Eritrea. It is classified as a stratovolcano, which is the typical cone-shaped image for volcanoes. Mousa Ali is roughly 6,600 feet tall. Although it is not extinct, the last known eruption occurred more than 10,000 years ago.

6. The highest point of Djibouti is Mousa Ali. Where is this located? Hint: It is the "tri-point" of Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti.

From Quiz Shake Djibouti

Answer: Northwest

A tri-point is where three countries meet. Djibouti is part of a tri-point, which also has Ethiopia and Eritrea, Djibouti's western and northern neighbors, respectively. Mousa Ali volcano sits right at the tri-point, so it is a volcano in all three countries, but is Djibouti's highest point.

7. Lac Assal is the lowest point in Djibouti. It is 508 feet below sea level. Why is it so low?

From Quiz Shake Djibouti

Answer: Because it was created by a crater

Lac Assal is so low because it was created by a crater. Lakes such as these are known as "crater lakes", such as Crater Lake in the United States. Lac Assal isn't too far off the coast of Djibouti, but because it is a crater lake, it is quite a large depression in the surface of the land. The entire crater isn't even completely full of water; there is a downwards slope before you even reach the water. In fact, the water is only 24 feet deep!

8. What crater lake in Djibouti is the lowest point in Djibouti, as well as the continent of Africa?

From Quiz Djibouti

Answer: Lake Assal

The shores of Lake Assal are at 512 feet below sea level, making it the lowest point in Djibouti and Africa. Lake Assal has the highest salinity of any body of water north of 60 degrees, which is Antarctica. Like the Great Salt Lake in Utah, salt is mined out of Lake Assal for shipping all over the world.

9. What desert, located north of the Great Rift Valley, makes up most of Djibouti?

From Quiz Djibouti

Answer: Danakil Desert

The Danakil Desert is a lowland geothermal region which covers much of western Djibouti. The Danakil Desert extends into Ethiopia and Eritrea. Erta Ale is a volcano that settles in the Danakil Desert.

10. What is the name of the mountain range found in Djibouti?

From Quiz Shake Djibouti

Answer: Goda Mountains

The Goda Mountains are a mountain range found within Djibouti. They aren't very large mountains, as they are only about 5,700 feet above sea level. This is nothing compared to the Asian monster mountains of the Himalayas, which are well over 25,000 feet in height.

11. The Moucha Islands, located in the Gulf of Tadjoura, are made up of two islands. The more eastern island is named Moucha. What is the name for the smaller, more western island?

From Quiz Djibouti

Answer: Maskali

Moucha and Maskali make up the Moucha Islands. Little flora is found, with scrub vegetation and mangroves. The Moucha Islands are more popular for coral reefs which visitors can scuba dive in and see.

12. What lake, which becomes the final destination of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Awash River, sits on the border of Djibouti and Ethiopia?

From Quiz Djibouti

Answer: Lake Abbe

Lake Abbe is a series of six lakes between Ethiopia and Djibouti. Lake Abbe is the center of the Afar Depression, which is where the Australopithecene skeleton Lucy was found. The lake is also known for its tall limestone vents and flamingos. Thanks for taking my quiz, and be sure to rate it!
