The flag is mainly red, with a gold border and the coat of arms in the centre. Montenegro achieved independent statehood on 13 July 2004, having previously been part of Yugoslavia. The coat of arms is a two-headed golden eagle, with one side holding an orb and the other a sceptre. There is a shield in the centre, with a gold lion passant, which means it is shown as walking with one front paw raised.

Albania also borders the Adriatic's eastern part, and lies south of Montenegro. Greece is even further south, and does not have any coastline on the Adriatic and France is nowhere near Montenegro or the Adriatic. The coastline runs for 193km, beginning from the north with the Bay of Kotor, which is often referred to as Europe's most southerly fjord. It is actually a drowned river bed, called a ria. The coast has several holiday resorts, including Budva and Ulcinj.

He left at the age of sixteen, and eventually settled in America where he became a naturalised American citizen. In 'The Black Mountain', published in 1954, Wolfe actually returned to Montenegro to investigate the death of his friend, Marko Vukcic.
