Fun Trivia
'The Great Gatsby' and 'Tender is the Night' are two of the five novels Fitzgerald produced in his short life (1896-1940). Some of his short stories are also gems, reflecting the lives of members of "The Lost Generation" to which he and his wife Zelda belonged.

F. Scott Fitzgerald Trivia Questions

1. When we first meet Jordan Baker in "Gatsby's" first chapter, what is she doing?

From Quiz
All About Jordan

Answer: lying on a sofa with Daisy

Jordan Baker is an old friend of Daisy Buchanan, from their childhood in Louisville, Kentucky. Both Daisy (a cousin of narrator Nick Carraway) and Jordan are dressed in white. Jordan is holding her chin up "...as if she were balancing something on it which was quite likely to fall." Nick soon falls for Jordan. The chin-balancing gesture is a mannerism of Jordan's.

2. Gatsby often stares at the light at the end of Daisy's dock. What color is it?

From Quiz Colors and "The Great Gatsby"

Answer: green

Gatsby dreams of having a "green light" to continue his relationship with Daisy.

5. Chapter 1: In the beginning, Nick describes a man using these words, "______, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." Who is this man Nick is talking about?

From Quiz The Great Gatsby

Answer: Jay Gatsby

Nick starts out the story reciting a quote that his father had always told him, "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." Throughout the story Nick seems to back down from criticizing Gatsby because of what his father told him.

6. Name the "small town on the Mississippi River" rich boy John T. Unger comes from.

From Quiz The Diamond as Big as the Ritz

Answer: Hades

Styx and Acheron are rivers in the underworld of Greek myth. Ultima Thule is the legendary end of the world of old Greece. Unger is about to unknowingly exchange one "Hades" for a worse one of mindless materialism and greed. His surname obviously points to hunger, the sort of materialistic hunger the Roaring 20's embraced and Fitzgerald criticized throughout the era.

7. What is the Caraway family business Nick leaves behind to go East?

From Quiz This and That about The Great Gatsby

Answer: Hardware

Nick's grandfather started the store.

8. Who is credited as the author of the poem that precedes the story?

From Quiz Great Gatsby

Answer: Thomas Parke D'Invilliers

It was actually written by Fitzgerald and sums up Gatsby's philosophy: "Then wear the gold hat if that will move her; If you can bounce high, bounce for her too, Till she cry 'Lover, gold-hatted, high bouncing lover, I must have you!'"

9. Whom does Nick meet when he visits Daisy the first time?

From Quiz The Great Gatsby

10. Jay is in love with whom?

From Quiz The Great Gatsby

Answer: Daisy Buchanan

11. What is Jordan's first line of dialogue?

From Quiz All About Jordan

Answer: "Absolutely!"

In the first chapter, when Nick converses with Daisy's husband, the boorish and brutal Tom Buchanan, a mention of the bond company Nick works for comes up. "Never heard of them", Tom replies when Nick tells tom his company's name. (We don't learn the company's name, though) "You will", the annoyed Nick shoots back, "You will if you stay in the East." The provincial Tom rejoins "Oh, I'll stay in the East, don't you worry. I'd be a...fool to live anywhere else." It's then that Jordan, silent up to then, says "Absolutely!", her first line of dialogue in the book. Its suddenness startles Nick. "Fiddle-Dee-Dee!" is the catchphrase of Scarlett O'Hara of "Gone With The Wind". The other answers are made-up.

12. Daisy is beautiful on the outside but many of her actions display her dishonesty and corruption. What two colors are used to portray these two parts of her?

From Quiz Colors and "The Great Gatsby"

Daisy seemed to be pure, but the center of her character was actually corrupt just like daisies have white petals and yellow centers.

15. Chapter 2: On the first page of this chapter, Nick describes a place that is between New York and West Egg. What is this "gray"-like place?

16. What prep school outside Boston, Mass. does Unger go to and meet Percy Washington at?

From Quiz The Diamond as Big as the Ritz

17. Nick lives in a suburb of New York City on a peninsula. What is the name of the village in which Nick lives?

21. What does Jordan tell Nick about Tom?

From Quiz All About Jordan

Answer: Tom has a mistress

When Tom is summoned for a "business call" on the phone, Jordan tells Nick Tom has a mistress. The mistress is, of course, Myrtle Wilson, who is cheating on her dim-bulb hubby George with Tom. Jordan says "You mean to say you don't know? I thought everybody knew...She (Myrtle) might have the decency not to phone him (Tom) at dinner-time." Here we get our first glimpse at Jordan's cynicism in her acceptance of the affair. (And of course Nick couldn't know about Tom and Myrtle!) In one of the novel's most famous scenes, an enraged Tom breaks Myrtle's nose when she mentions Daisy's name in an arguement at a New York party. Later, Tom dares denounce the platonic affair of Jay Gatsby and Daisy when he's been cheating on his wife!

22. Daisy and Jordan are first seen wearing this color.

From Quiz Colors and "The Great Gatsby"

Answer: white

Answer: A white cat

Nicole thinks Dick "must be very wise".

24. What film has Rosemary recently starred in?

From Quiz "Tender is the Night" Part 1

Answer: Daddy's Girl

27. Just how big is the diamond of the title that Percy's family owns?

From Quiz The Diamond as Big as the Ritz

Of course no diamond on Earth can ever make up a whole mountain in real life! But in Fitzgerald's allegory it's one cubic mile of pure diamond that Percy's family has built a fancy chateau upon.

28. Meyer Wolfsheim engages Nick in a discussion of his unique cuff links. What are Wolfsheim's cuff links made of?

From Quiz This and That about The Great Gatsby

Answer: human teeth

Wolfsheim is the man who "fixed" the Chicago Black Sox World Series and is a friend of Gatsby.

29. Daisy says she always watching for this day and is always missing it. What day is it?

From Quiz Great Gatsby

One of the numerous instances in this book where people have only a tenuous grasp on time passing. It's an interesting subtext to the story.

30. Whose nose did Tom Buchanan break in the book?

Tom breaks Mrs. Wilson's nose in the New York apartment where they meet because he thinks that she has no right to mention Daisy's name and they get in an argument over it.
