There is no reason as to why the viewer would die in a week, but "The Ring" does hint out that Samara was alive down in the well for a week. We can assume that Sadako also survived down in the well for seven days.

Tomoko and her three friends Shuichi, Haruko, and Takehiko were the first to watch the evil tape. In the beginning of the story, Asakawa is told about a mysterious death and realizes that it's kind of odd that all four friends died at the same time on the same day. Tomoko is Asakawa's wife's niece, and he decides to investigate the reason behind the group's deaths.
