Universal Horror Movies Trivia Questions

1. Why did Dr. Pretorius want Frankenstein's help in "Bride of Frankenstein"?

From Quiz
World of Universal Horror

Answer: To create a full sized person

Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) went to see Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) while Frankenstein recovered from the fight with the monster in "Frankenstein". Dr. Pretorius later showed tiny people he had created and kept in jars. The assumption was that Pretorius guessed that the monster which had attacked people was created by Frankenstein, and he wanted Frankenstein's help in creating another creature because he had "achieved size". Frankenstein admitted that the creations of Pretorius were more like black magic, but eventually, they worked together to make the "bride" of the monster.

7. Who played Kay Lawrence in "Creature From the Black Lagoon"?

From Quiz World of Universal Horror

Answer: Julie Adams

Someone had found a fossil of a "gill-man", which was part-fish and part-man. Of course, a woman, Kay (Julie Adams) went on the expedition, and the gill-man grabbed her and ran off with her. The men tried various ways to kill or capture him. (Now that I think of it, there was no proof the creature was a man. It could've been a female.) Julie Adams (Oct 17, 1926) was born in Waterloo, Iowa. She married screenwriter/producer Leonard Stern (1951-1953) and Ray Danton (1954-1981). She appeared in various movies, including "Tickle Me" (1965) with Elvis Presley, and made many guest appearances in TV shows, including "The Andy Griffith Show", "Perry Mason", and "The Rifleman".

8. Seven of the eight films in this series featured the name "Frankenstein" in their title. The one exception, released in 1945, was entitled "House of ____"?

From Quiz Universal's Frankenstein Series

Answer: Dracula

"House of Dracula" was the seventh film in the series. Though some may see it as the last step in a long decline in the films' quality, it does feature some interesting turns and twists, including an ironic take on the "hunchback" stock character. In "House of Dracula", the hunchback was played by the lovely Jane Adams and, despite the film's lurid trailer, she was anything but monstrous. The film's denouement was predicated on the film's "mad" Dr. Edelman (played with relish by Onslow Stevens) racing to cure her deformity before succumbing to the insanity forced upon him by an infusion of Dracula's blood. If you're wondering how the Frankenstein Monster plays into this, you're not alone.

13. Which actress was up for the role of Elizabeth in 'Frankenstein', 1931?

From Quiz Universal Horror

Answer: Bette Davis

14. As mentioned in the introduction, the character of the Frankenstein monster was first played (in a Universal picture) by Boris Karloff in James Whale's 1931 film "Frankenstein". In how many films of this series would Karloff appear?

From Quiz Universal's Frankenstein Series

Answer: 4

This is something of a trick question. Karloff followed his definitive role in "Frankenstein" with a similar performance in "Bride of Frankenstein". This second performance is held by many film historians to be superior to the original, and marks a definite progression of the character, including his acquisition of speech. In Karloff's third turn as the creature in "Son of Frankenstein", however, we see the character reduced to an aphasic brute manipulated by Bela Lugosi's Igor. Karloff's final appearance in the series came as the "mad scientist" Gustav Niemann in "House of Frankenstein"; the Monster was played by Glenn Strange.
