1. Where, on his face, does Lawrence get a scratch?

Answer: Left Cheek

We don't actually see how Lawrence gets this scratch on his face, as it is there from the start of the film, when we first see him. In the flashback sequences, when he is working at the hospital, or is at the police station, he doesn't have the scratch, so I can only assume he received it in the events between being attacked by the 'Jigsaw Killer' in the parking lot, and his waking up in the abandoned bathroom. In "Saw" he is a doctor who is suspected of the murders by Detective Tapp. The 'Jigsaw Killer' chooses Lawrence because he is having an affair. Cary Elwes, who plays Doctor Lawrence Gordon, was also in "Ella Enchanted" in 2004, "Wish You Were Dead" in 2002 and in the adaptation of James Patterson's book with the same name, "Kiss The Girls" in 1997. He also appeared in many episodes of "The X Files" as FBI Assistant Director Brad Follmer.

There are Dr. Lawrence, played by Cary Elwes, Adam, played by Leigh Whannell and also John. John is one of Lawrence's patients at the hospital. Throughout the film we don't see much of him, and we see even less of his face. We think the body in the middle of the bathroom is dead. However, later on we find out the body is alive, and it's John. He is the one responsible for all the terrible tortures. John is played by Tobin Bell.

Adam ends up waking up in the bathtub and when he gets out, the whole story begins. He and Lawrence are trapped in a dingy bathroom with chains around their ankles.

In "Saw" she plays Alison Gordon, wife of Lawrence who is trapped in the bathroom. Zep holds Alison and Diana, her daughter, hostage. He must kill them if he wants the antidote to the poison in his blood system. Monica Potter was in the TV series "Boston Legal" from 2004-2005. She played Amanda Pierce in the film "Head Over Heals" in 2001, was in "Heaven or Vegas" in 1999 and played Tricia Poe in "Con Air" in 1997.

Adam is so freaked out about waking up in the bathroom that he starts looking up and down his body, and lifting up his T-shirt. Dr. Lawrence starts looking at Adam in the most curious way. Adam: "Can you see any scars?" Lawrence: "What?" Adam: "This is what they do man. They kidnap you and drug you. Before you know it you're lying in a bathtub and your kidneys are on eBay." Lawrence: "No one has taken your kidneys." Adam: "How can you tell from way over there?" Lawrence: "Because you'd either be in terrible agony, or you'd be dead by now. Trust me." We later find out that the person responsible for locking them up in this way, is someone the police have named The Jigsaw Killer. He's called this because he cuts out sections of his victims skin, in the shape of jigsaw puzzle pieces. The Jigsaw Killer is a patient of Lawrence's, who is a surgeon at a hospital. (This is how he knows nobody has taken Adams kidneys.) His patient has a brain tumour, and is trying to teach people to value life.

Lawrence's tape says that the only way he can leave the room is if he shoots and kills Adam otherwise his family will die and he and Adam will be left within the room.

Lawrence is questioned by Detectives Tapp (Danny Glover) and Sing (Ken Leung) but then released, as his alibi checks out. Despite this, Detective Tapp is convinced that Lawrence is the killer.

Adam notices the time just after he finds the photograph of the man at the window of Lawrence's apartment. Lawrence identifies the man as Zep, an orderly from his hospital. The clock on the wall is noticeably new, which, as Lawrence says, is because whoever put it there wanted them to know the time. We find out later when they listen to their tapes, that Lawrence has until 6 o'clock to kill Adam or his wife and daughter will die.

We don't know, at this point, whether it is 10:20 at night, or in the morning. However, we later find out it is at night, because Alison and Diana are in bed when Zep ties them up in their house. He has also been set a task by the Jigsaw Killer. He has set up television screens and computers in their house so he can watch for when Adam is killed. So we know it is happening at the same time, and is therefore 10:20 at night. Adam and Lawrence are being held captive in a bathroom of an abandoned warehouse. They look around the room when they first turn the lights on, and Lawrence notices the brand new clock. He realises that somebody wants them to know the time. Just after this, Adam and Lawrence find the tapes in their pockets. On Lawrence's tape, it says he has got until 6:00 to kill Adam. This is the point that they, and the audience, realise the significance of the new clock in the bathroom.

Alison is played by Monica Potter who also appeared in "Along Came a Spider", and is a star on the TV show "Boston Legal". Allison and Diana are held hostage while Lawrence is still playing Jigsaw's game.

Both Lawrence and Adam find envelopes in their pockets, containing a selection of things. They both include a cassette tape. Lawrence's envelope also contains a single bullet and a tiny key. They spot a tape player, in the hand of the 'dead' man in the centre of the room between them. Adam plays his tape and we hear the voice on the tape talk about Adam, saying that he just sits around watching everyone else. Adam doesn't understand this. We find out that he is a photographer who is paid to follow people, and take pictures of them. Retired Detective Tapp hires him to follow Dr. Lawrence because Tapp is convinced Lawrence is the Jigsaw Killer.

Adam finds the saws within the tank of the toilet in the room, but when he tries to cut his ankle chain, the saw breaks apart. Lawrence realizes that the saws weren't meant for their chains, but they were meant for their feet.

We don't find out, because Lawrence crawls away after sawing his foot off, to go and find help. We don't know if he if he reaches help and survives or not. The 'Jigsaw Killer' (Tobin Bell) leaves Adam chained up in the bathroom and we don't know whether he survives. He also tells him the key to the lock on his chain was in the bathtub. However, at the beginning of the film, we see Adam climb out of the bath and his foot pulls out the plug. We see something go down the plughole with the water, which was probably the key. It is unlikely that he does survive, unless Lawrence reaches help.

"Saw" is brilliantly written and performed, and has a magnificent twist at the end. It is one of the best horror films in years! Leigh Whannell co-wrote it with James Wan, who also directed it. Leigh Whannell plays Adam in this film.

Tobin Bell plays John, the Jigsaw Killer. We see him in a hospital bed, because he has a brain tumour, and Dr.Lawrence is treating him. He is only on camera for a few minutes, so, is put out of our minds by the rest of the story going on. I certainly forgot about him. At the end of the film, when the 'dead' man from the middle of the bathroom stands up, we remember who he is, and realise what has been going on. Tobin Bell was also in "The Fourth Floor" in 1999, "The Quick and the Dead" in 1995 and "Mississippi Burning" back in 1988. He has also been in the hit TV series "24" and "Alias". He provided his voice to the 2000 film "The Road to El Dorado" and played John again in "Saw" sequels. Michael Emerson played Zep, the hospital orderly. Up until the end we think he is the Jigsaw Killer, but thanks to a superb twist in the final scenes, we realise he is just another victim of the killer's game. Ken Leung played Detective Sing, who dies by being shot. Ken Leung was also in one of my favourite films, "Keeping the Faith" (2000) as the eccentric Don, the karaoke machine seller. Keith Adams was the stunt co-ordinator, and wasn't actually in the film.

In a flashback, we hear the recording on the tape found in the room with Marks burnt body. It starts with, "Hello Mark. If you're so sick, then why do I have so many photos of you up and about?" We see a man in a small room, with no clothes on, covered in some kind of greasy, flammable substance. There is a safe in the room and thousands of possible combinations of numbers written all over the walls. There is a candle in the room, which was his only source of light, so he had to carry it around with him. This is how he burnt to his death. The only person to survive the Jigsaw Killers attack was Amanda, the drug addict. It was of course, Lawrence who was thought to be having an affair, and Paul who cut his wrists.

When Sing and Tapp are investigating Jigsaw's apartment, Jigsaw returns home, and when Tapp and Sing are chasing him, Sing hits a tripwire causing him to be shot in the head. Jigsaw gets away and Tapp regrets letting him go.

When Adam won't reveal how he knew to turn off the lights, Lawrence asks, "What else aren't you telling me?" Adam proceeds to tell him, "On my sixth birthday, my best friend at the time, Scott Tibbs stabbed me with a rusty nail, I didn't tell you that." He also says, "My last girlfriend, a feminist, vegan punk broke up with me because I was too angry." He starts to say something about one of his toenails but Lawrence interrupts him.

As we hear Dr. Lawrence say, "...technically speaking, he's...not really a murderer. He never killed anyone. He finds ways for his victims to kill themselves." I originally thought he killed Zep, with the "...slow acting poison..." in his veins. But in fact, Adam kills Zep with the toilet cistern lid at the end of the film, because he thinks Zep is the Jigsaw Killer. However, after doing this, Adam finds a tape in Zep's pocket telling him he also has a task to do before he can get the antidote for the poison. Then the 'dead' man who has been lying on the floor for, roughly, the past eight hours, stands up, and walks away. The audience, and Adam, at this point, realise he is the true Jigsaw Killer. The Jigsaw Killer walks away, and slams the door shut after saying, "Game over". Very scary.

Within the case (opened by the key in Lawrence's envelope) they find a cell phone for incoming calls, two cigarettes, and a note. On the note, Jigsaw implies that Lawrence doesn't need a gun to kill Adam, but he could poison one of the cigarettes with the poison on the ground in the bathroom.

Tapp is paying Adam to take photos of Lawrence. Since the death of his partner Sing, Tapp has become obsessed with the Jigsaw case and is convinced that Lawrence is the killer. He keeps a constant watch on Lawrence's home.

At the end of the film, Adam kills Zep. Adam then finds a tape in Zep's pocket, and he plays it. It says, "Hello Mr Hindle. Or as they call you round the hospital, Zep." Adam realises Zep is another victim, and is the one responsible for capturing Lawrence and Adam and putting them in the bathroom. Michael Emerson plays Zep. We don't find out why Zep is chosen by the 'Jigsaw Killer'.

Amanda doesn't receive a cassette tape, but there is a television in the room where she is tied to a chair. The hideous white-faced puppet the Jigsaw Killer uses to represent himself comes on the television screen, and tells her about her situation. She has a kind of reverse bear trap on her head. The Jigsaw Killer tells us that she has to get the key out of the stomach of her dead cell mate before the timer goes off and springs the trap, which would rip her jaw open, permanently. She goes ahead and looks for the key with the tiny knife provided. She retrieves the key and gets the head trap off just in time.
