Music from 1965 Trivia Questions

1. "What's New Pussycat?" was a hit for which British singer?

From Quiz
Hits of 1965 - Part 2

Answer: Tom Jones

"What's New Pussycat?" was recorded by Tom Jones and written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It can be found on his 1965 album of the same name. It reached number three in the US and number eleven in the UK.

2. This band took the Bob Dylan tune "It Ain't Me Babe" and turned it into their first top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. Can you name the band?

From Quiz Remembering 1965

Answer: The Turtles

The band, which was formed in Westchester, California, in 1965, was originally called the Crossfires and performed surf-rock music. Due to the changing musical trend at the time, they became a folk-rock band and changed their name to the Tyrtles, an intentional misspelling a la the Byrds and the Beatles. The trendy spelling didn't last though and soon they became the Turtles. "It Ain't Me Babe" peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, the first of six top 20 hits the group would have. The Turtles broke up in 1970, but two of the founding members, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, still perform today under the name of Flo and Eddie.

3. At number one in the UK charts were The Hollies who, after five previous top ten hits, finally made it to the top - with what song?

From Quiz My Birthday Top Ten - 1965

Answer: I'm Alive

The Hollies enjoyed much success in the mid-sixties, including some minor chart success in the USA. Like lots of bands though, they experienced internal difficulty over touring and the material they were recording and, in 1968, the lead singer, Graham Nash left, partly because the rest of the band refused to record his song "Marrakesh Express" which, ironically, was the first hit for his new band, Crosby Stills and Nash.

4. Which song that was released as a follow-up to the Number Two "A Lover's Concerto" did The Toys place in the US Top Twenty in 1965?

From Quiz 1965 One-Word Title US Top Forty Songs.

Answer: Attack

The Toys had been pared down from five members to a trio when they began doing backing vocals as The Charlettes in New York. While performing at a talent contest they came to the attention of personnel from DynoVoice Records. The songwriting staff from the label arranged a Pop version of a Bach tune and "A Lover's Concerto" was released, becoming a major hit. The same songwriting team of Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell wrote their follow-up single, "Attack". They followed with "I Got My Heart Set on You" and "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" but never entered the Top Twenty again. "Quicksand" and "Memories" were released by Martha and the Vandellas in the sixties. "Playboy" was done by The Marvelettes.

5. The first record to hit the number one spot in 1965 was performed by The Supremes. What was the title?

From Quiz US Billboard number ones 1965

Answer: Come See About Me

'Come See About Me' was the third record in a run of five for The Supremes to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the early part of the 1960s. This record originally hit the top spot in December 1964, regaining number one on January 16th 1965. *Useless information* The Supremes released eight singles between 1961 and 1964 with not one of these charted in the Billboard top 20. The next seven releases gained them six number one hits.

6. Hello! Don't you guys get the message yet singing these words, whoever you are? "Now there's no welcome look in your eyes When I reach for you"

The Everly Brothers never had a US chart hit in 1965 but "The Price Of Love" was a number two hit on the UK chart in 1965. The Walker Brothers had a number 16 hit on the US pop chart in 1965 with "Make It Easy On Yourself". It reached number one on the UK chart and was their second of ten UK chart hits, where they seemed to be more popular. The Brothers Four had a number 91 hit on the US pop chart in 1965 with "Try To Remember". It did not chart in the UK.

The Fortunes just missed the UK number one spot with "You've Got Your Troubles" (one of my favourite records of 1965) it stalled at number two. It reached number seven on the US chart.

9. During the week of January 23rd, 1965 we all went "Downtown" with a British gal. Who was the singer that took "Downtown" to the top spot?

From Quiz Billboard Number 1 Songs of 1965

Answer: Petula Clark

Although Petula was already an international star in the early sixties, she was a relative unknown in America. Her arranger, Tony Hatch, was playing a song on the piano and Petula thought it would be a great song if it had lyrics. After adding lyrics Tony had Petula record "Downtown" and it entered the hot 100 at 87, hitting the top spot five weeks later. Dusty Springfield sang "I Only Want to Be With You" and went on to do "Son of A Preacher Man." Cilla Black was a hat check girl at the Cavern Club during the Beatles' early days there and later recorded "You're My World." Marianne Faithfull's first American hit was the Jagger/Richards composition, "As Tears Go By."

10. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" was a hit for which duo?

11. "You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips And there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips You're trying hard not to show it But baby, baby I know it" Identify this #1 from 1965.

From Quiz 1965 Lyrics - part deux

Answer: You've Lost That Loving Feeling

By The Righteous Brothers (Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield and unrelated), this song was a two week chart topper in January. Together, they had seven top-40's until 1966 when they split up, only to reunite in 1974 when they had three more top 40's. The duo faded from view until this song was featured in the movie "Top Gun" in 1986. Their popularity soared even further when their rendition of "Unchained Melody" was featured in the movie "Ghost" in 1990. Bobby Hatfield died in 2003... the "Brothers" are no more.

12. What was #10 on the 1965 countdown? "I've got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside I've got the month of May. I guess you'd say, What can make me feel this way? My girl (my girl, my girl)."

From Quiz BRI's Top Ten Hits of 1965

17. This Bob Dylan song, a top five hit from the LP "Highway 61 Revisited", caused quite a stir at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Dylan performed the number PLUGGED IN. Can you name the song?

From Quiz Remembering 1965

Answer: Like a Rolling Stone

"Like a Rolling Stone" peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and was Dylan's highest charting single to date. At the Newport Folk Festival Dylan performed his first electric set since high school with a backing band consisting of Al Kooper and three members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. There were some cheers from the crowd, but mostly booing, which led to Dylan and the band leaving the stage after just three songs. Rumor has it that folk legend Pete Seeger was running around backstage looking for an axe to cut the power cords, but during an interview with the radio program "Democracy Now!" he denied that claim.

18. The son of a famous actor/singer was the leader of the group that sang "This Diamond Ring". What is his name?

From Quiz That Was The Year That Was: Pop Music 1965

Answer: Gary Lewis (Jerry Lewis)

"This Diamond Ring" was written by Al Kooper/Bob Brass/Irwin Levine. It was number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for Gary Lewis & The Playboys in 1965. It did not chart in the UK. Drummer Gary Lewis born Gary Harold Lee Levitch in 1946, was the son of actor/comedian/singer Jerry Lewis. "This Diamond Ring" was first recorded by Sammy Ambrose in 1964. His version did not chart and he never had any hits on the Billboard Hot 100. On the version by Garry Lewis & The Playboys, Gary Lewis's voice was supported by overdubs by The Ron Hicklin Singers and The Playboys only played their instruments on the backing tracks. The music was performed by members of The Wrecking Crew, Hal Blaine (drums), Joe Osborn (bass) and Leon Russell (keyboards). Even the songwriter Al Kooper was unhappy about the recordings of his song, he would have preferred a group like The Drifters to have recorded it.

19. At number two, their second and highest UK Top Ten hit, with "Heart Full Of Soul", was a band who saw some of the UK's finest guitarists in their line-up in the mid-sixties, including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Name the band.

From Quiz My Birthday Top Ten - 1965

Answer: The Yardbirds

Beck took Clapton's place in the band, then Page came in on bass. Beck was later sacked, and eventually Page was joined by Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham in a band briefly called The New Yardbirds, who soon morphed into Led Zeppelin.

20. Which Texas city did Dean Martin sing about on his 1965 US Number 21 single?

From Quiz 1965 One-Word Title US Top Forty Songs.

Answer: Houston

After switching from Capitol Records to Reprise in 1962 Dean scored a US Number One single in 1964 with "Everybody Loves Somebody" and placed "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" in the Top Forty. In 1965 Dean had Top Forty success with "Send Me the Pillow That You Dream on" and "Houston". After the single was a hit Dean released his "Houston" album in November, 1965. Dean Martin began his recording career in 1946 releasing "Which Way Did My Heart Go?" for Diamond Records. The following year he moved to Apollo Records then began recording for Capitol Records in 1948. His first Top Forty Capitol release was "That Certain Party" with Jerry Lewis. In 1953 he broke the Top Ten when "That's Amore" reached Number Three and had a Number One hit two years later with "Memories Are Made of This".

From Quiz Whose Line Was It Anyway? US Number One Hits 1965

23. In 1965, Sam The Sham had a big hit with the single "Wooly Bully." What was the name of Sam's backup band?

From Quiz 1965 Pop Music Hits

Answer: The Pharaohs

Sam the Sham (aka Domingo "Sam" Samudio) grew up in Dallas, Texas, and formed the nucleus of the Pharaohs in the early 1960s. "Wooly Bully" turned out to be the Pharaohs' biggest U.S. hit, rising to the number two position on the Billboard charts in June 1965. Band member Butch Gibson played the hard-driving saxophone solo on this record which featured the following opening lyrics: "Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw / Had two big horns and a wooly jaw/Wooly bully..." The song's lyrics didn't make such sense, but the music was fun to dance to. In 1965, Junior Walker and the All Stars had a hit with "Shotgun"; The McCoys sang "Hang On Sloopy"; and the Searchers performed "Love Potion Number Nine."

24. Who travelled around like royalty with these majestic words? "Old worn out suit and shoes I don't pay no union dues"

25. A duo had a huge smash the week of February 6, 1965, with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" Who was this talented twosome?

From Quiz Billboard Number 1 Songs of 1965

Answer: The Righteous Brothers

The Righteous Brothers adopted their name when they were performing for black Marines at the Black Derby in Santa Ana, California, who claimed the boys were "righteous". Bill Medley was formerly in a group called The Paramours and Bobby Hatfield was a member of the Variations. They teamed up and after hearing them at the Rendezvous Ballroom a producer decided to record them. Their original song, "Little Latin Lupe Lu," had hot local sales. They started appearing with major acts including the Ronettes and eventually came to the attention of Phil Spector, who recorded them singing the Spector/Mann/Weil song. Jan and Dean sang "Surf City." Sonny and Cher had a hit with "I've Got You, Babe." Sonny also worked for Spector at one time. The McCoys charted with "Hang On Sloopy."
