Unarmed students at Kent State University were protesting the US involvement in Cambodia. National Guardsmen fired almost 70 rounds in under 20 seconds, killing four and injuring nine. Some of the students shot were just walking by the proceedings and weren't actually involved in the protest itself. Crosby was quoted as saying that the inclusion of Nixon's name in the song was "the bravest thing" he'd ever heard.
