The Monkees Trivia Questions

1. Which Monkee sang lead vocals for "Last Train to Clarksville"?

From Quiz
Hey, Hey, Who Sings the Songs?

Answer: Micky Dolenz

Micky Dolenz was the lead vocalist for "Last Train to Clarksville". Written by Tommy Boyce and Tommy Hart, the song appeared on "The Monkees" (1966), the first album from the group. The album dates from the early days of the group where studio musicians played most of the instruments--in this case the Candy Store Prophets, who often worked with Boyce and Hart. The song tells the story of a man who asks a woman to meet him at a train station before he leaves town, perhaps forever. The song reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

2. In which song would you find the following lyrics? "I thought love was more or less a given thing, Seems the more I gave the less I got. What's the use in tryin'? All you get is pain."

From Quiz The Monkees Lyrics

Answer: I'm A Believer

"I'm A Believer" (1966) was written by Neil Diamond and sung by Micky Dolenz. It comes from the album "More of the Monkees" (1967). It got to number one in the UK, Australia, Canada, and Ireland.

3. Who sang lead on this Monkees song: "Mary, Mary"?

Answer: Micky Dolenz

One of my favorite Monkee songs. It was from the second album entitled "More of the Monkees".

4. What are the names of the four Monkees?

From Quiz I'm a Believer

Answer: Micky, Davy, Peter, Mike

They were Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith.

5. The first song released for radio from "Instant Replay" includes the lyric "I'm about as low as I've been in a long time." What is the name?

From Quiz Last Three Monkees Albums of the 1960s

Answer: Tear Drop City

"Tear Drop City" charted at #56 on Billboard's pop charts in 1969. It was actually recorded around the time of the sessions for the second album, "More Of The Monkees", but left in the can. It was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, and was a "sideways 'Last Train to Clarksville.'" "Someday Man" was never on an album, but was on the same single as "Listen To The Band" and a delightful tune in its own right.

6. Which song from 1968 began with the lyric: "My, my, the clock in the sky is pounding away with so much to say. A face, a voice, the overdub has no choice, and each cannot retrace."?

From Quiz Monkees Tunes

Answer: The Porpoise Song

This was the theme song to the movie "Head". It was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King (the one and same).

7. 'But when I need you beside me, stay close enough to guide me, confide in me...'

From Quiz Monkees Lyrics

Answer: I Wanna Be Free

Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart this song appeared on 'The Monkees' album and was considered by many to be their version of The Beatles 'Yesterday'.

16. Who is listed as Music Supervisor on More of the Monkees?

From Quiz Monkees for all!

Answer: Don Kirshner

17. Which song was The Monkees first number one hit?

From Quiz Monkee Mayhem

Answer: 'Last Train To Clarksville'

'Last Train To Clarksville' was a last minute composition of Boyce and Hart when it was noticed The Monkees were a few songs short of a full (debut) album. So, it was quite a shock when it hit number one so quickly. 'Saturday's Child' was also on their debut album, yet 'Your Auntie Grizelda' was on their second album, 'More Of The Monkees'.

18. Complete the lyric, 'It was easy then to tell right from wrong....' ?

From Quiz Do You Know Your Monkees Music?

Answer: Easy then to tell weak from strong.

'When a man should stand and fight, or just go along.' Yep, it's 'Shades of Gray'.

19. Name the song with these lyrics: 'Seems the more I gave the less I got'

From Quiz Monkees lyrics

Answer: I'm A Believer

20. Which Monkee sang lead vocals for "Your Auntie Grizelda"?

From Quiz Hey, Hey, Who Sings the Songs?

Answer: Peter Tork

Peter Tork (born 1942) performed lead vocals on "Your Auntie Grizelda", a song where the narrator complains to his girlfriend about her disagreeable relative. Never released as a single, the song appeared on the group's second album, "More of the Monkees" (1967), which was the number one album on the US Billboard 200 chart for 18 weeks. Music for the song was written by Jack Keller and lyrics by Diane Hildebrand. Tork, a talented instrumental musician, would eventually play several instruments--most often bass guitar or keyboards--on several albums.

22. Who sang lead on this Monkees song: "Papa Gene's Blues"?

From Quiz Monkee-mania: Who Sang Lead?

Answer: Mike

This song was from the debut album simply entitled "The Monkees" released by Colgems in October 1966. "Last Train to Clarksville" was the first big hit from this LP.

23. What was the Monkees' first single?

From Quiz I'm a Believer

Answer: "Last Train To Clarksville"

"Last Train To Clarksville" was released in August 1966, just weeks before their first television broadcast.

24. A single from "The Monkees Present" has a lyric "There's a smile on the wind as it touches my face and starts to erase all the blues." What was the song?

From Quiz Last Three Monkees Albums of the 1960s

Answer: Good Clean Fun

Released as single #5005 from Colgems, "Good Clean Fun" charted at 82 on Billboard's pop charts in 1969. The song has nothing at all to do with good, clean fun, but Mike purposely wrote a song with that title as almost a "middle finger" to a studio executive. The song would probably have charted better if fans would have known what to ask for when they called in to disc jockeys.

25. Which song contains the lyrics: "I can tell by your face, that you're looking to find a place, to settle your mind and reveal who you are."?

From Quiz Monkees Tunes

Answer: As We Go Along

This was the B-Side to the "Porpoise Song", and also penned by Carole King.

26. 'I knew I should have taken off my shoes, it's front page news...'

Answer: Goin' Down

Released in the fall of 1967 as the flip side of 'Daydream Believer', this song gives writing credit to Diane Hilderbrand, and all four of the Monkees.

27. Which instruments does Davy play?

From Quiz Davy Jones

Answer: Tamborine, maracas, bass, drums

Heaps of (girl) fans bought mini-tamborines to be just like Davy in the 60s.

28. Why does Micky sing that he's "gonna buy a dog"?

From Quiz Monkees Lyrics

Answer: Because I need a friend now

From Quiz Monkees Lyrical Trivia

Answer: You Just May Be the One

"All men must have someone, have someone who would never take advantage of a love bright as the sun. Someone to stand beside them, and you just may be the one." - from "Headquarters", sung by Mike, written by Mike Nesmith.
