Canadian Football League ... the Canadian Football Council was established in 1956 and two years later withdrew from the Canadian Rugby Union (formed in 1891). It then changed its name to the Canadian Football League and on Thursday August 14th, 1958 the CFL opened as the Blue Bombers defeated the Edmonton Eskimos 29-21 at Winnipeg.
