1. Jimmy Johnson was the head coach for Oklahoma State from 1979-1983 before he bolted to the University of Miami, where he went on to win a national championship. What coach followed Johnson?

From Quiz
Oklahoma State Football

Answer: Pat Jones

Jones coached from 1984-1994, and had a bit of success until NCAA sanctions that were committed during Johnson's tenure crippled the team. Jones eventually left to coach under Johnson in the NFL.

2. The Cowboys have been members of several different conferences over the years. What conference did they start out in?

From Quiz Oklahoma State Football

Answer: Southwest

The Cowboys (then the Oklahoma A&M Aggies) were founding members of the Southwest Conference in 1915, along with Arkansas, Baylor, Oklahoma, Rice, Southwestern, Texas, and Texas A&M. However, early membership in that conference fluctuated and Oklahoma State left in 1925 to join the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association. That group split into the Big Six Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference in 1928, with Oklahoma State joining the latter.

3. Oklahoma State has produced a number of Consensus All-Americans at running back. Who was the school's first at that position?

From Quiz Oklahoma State Football

Answer: Bob Fenimore

Fenimore was an All-American in 1944. In 1945 was named a Consensus All-American. In that year, he finished third in the Heisman voting. Miller was an All-American in 1976 and again 1977, when he was a Consensus All-American. That year, he finished second in the Heisman vote to Earl Campbell. Ward (1969) and Gofourth (1976) were both Consensus All-Americans, but they were on the OL.

4. In 1980, the NCAA expanded to having 15 bowl games. That continued until 1990, when it moved to 19 games. During that ten-year span, from 1980 to 1989, how many bowl games did Oklahoma State go to?

From Quiz Oklahoma State Football

Answer: 6

The Cowboys won 4 out of those 6 games, including a 62-14 victory over Wyoming in the 1988 Holiday Bowl. The six bowl games were: 1981 : 16-33 : Independence Bowl vs. Texas A&M 1983 : 24-14 : Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl vs. Naylor 1984 : 21-14 : Gator Bowl vs. South Carolina 1985 : 23-24 : Gator Bowl vs. Florida State 1987 : 35-33 : Sun Bowl vs. Wes Virginia 1988 : 62-14 : Holiday Bowl vs. Wyoming.

5. In 1945, Oklahoma State (then Oklahoma A&M) went to its first bowl game. What was the bowl?

From Quiz Oklahoma State Football

Answer: Cotton Bowl

The 1945 Cotton Bowl featured Oklahoma A&M vs. Texas Christian. The Aggies (as they were then called) won handily, 34-0.

6. In 2003, the stadium for the Oklahoma State Cowboys was rechristened "Boone Pickens Stadium" after billionaire alumnus T. Boone Pickens, who donated significantly to the school's athletic program. Prior to that, what was the name of that venue?

From Quiz Oklahoma State Football

Answer: Lewis Field

Lewis Field was named in 1913 after a popular administrator and dean at the university, Dr. Layman Lewis. The stadium is one of only a few in football that are oriented East-West.

7. From 1958-95, Oklahoma State was in the Big Eight Conference. The conference featured perennial powerhouses like Nebraska and Oklahoma. How many times in that span did Oklahoma State face an opponent ranked #1?

From Quiz Oklahoma State Football

Answer: 4

Though they did play quite a few #3 and #2 teams during this span -- including Arkansas, Colorado, Nebraska, and Oklahoma -- it's not surprising that their #1 foes during the Big Eight years were Nebraska (1971, losing 41-13 and 1983, losing 14-10) and Oklahoma (1974, losing 44-13 and 1987, losing 21-10).
