Newcastle played in the Sydney premiership (NSWRL) back in 1908, when the local townspeople entered a side in the first ever rugby league competition in Australia. In its first season Newcastle finished fifth and won four of nine games, and in the following season they won five of ten games, and finished third in an eight-team competition. Despite performing fairly well in both seasons of their short existence, Newcastle left the Sydney competition after 2 seasons. The Newcastle competition kicked off in 1910 and quickly became the third strongest competition in Australia, behind the Sydney and Brisbane competitions.

After the NSWRL started to expand by adding Canberra and Illawarra in 1982, Newcastle began devising a plan to get a team ready for the Sydney premiership. In deciding to prepare a team for the NSWRL, the Newcastle club had to work out who should run the club, how the city would raise the finances for the club, where the club would be run and play from and also who should play for the club when they enter the Sydney competition. The club attempted to get admitted into the NSWRL in 1985 but weren't accepted until 1988. The Newcastle Knights, as they were now known, were accepted into the 1988 NSWRL along with the Gold Coast Seagulls and the Brisbane Broncos in a new 16-team competition.
