www.superleague.co.uk Super League came to fruition in 1996, running in tanndem with the Australian competition, with teams from Paris and Gateshead plus London, from outside of the 'heartland', joined in the top flight. March 1996 saw Super League kick off with Paris playing host to Sheffield Eagles in the first ever game. Many clubs entered into the new era by changing their names. Clubs such as Wigan, Castleford and Warrington were tagged with the nicknames Warriors, Tigers and Wolves.
