100m Sprint Trivia Questions

1. 100m Top 10 List for 2001-2011: Number 10 is Richard Thompson who ran a 9.85 sec 100m on 13th August 2011 on his home country track in Port of Spain. It was a National record for his home country. Which tropical paradise does Richard call home?

From Quiz
Ten-Speed!

Answer: Trinidad and Tobago

Richard Thompson is from Cascade on the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago. His nickname is the "Torpedo," on account of his powerful speed. Arguably, his grandest accomplishment was the silver medal earned in the 100m dash at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where his time of 9.89 was second only to the extraordinary Usain Bolt. Thompson also aided his countrymen to a silver medal in the 4x100m relay at the Beijing Olympics. A year later, the Trinidadian quartet captured the silver medal at the Berlin World Championships riding the Torpedo's blistering speed.

2. The USA dominated the men's 100m dash since the modern Olympics began in 1896, but there have been winners from 7 other countries as well. The first non-American to win the gold medal was from which country?

From Quiz Olympics: 100-Meter Dash

Answer: South Africa

Reginald Walker of South Africa won gold in 1908, after the Americans had won the event in the first 3 Olympics.

3. The 1981 Oscar-winning movie, "Chariots of Fire", depicted the Olympic experience of the 1924 winner. What was the name of this gold medal winner in the 100 meters?

From Quiz Olympics: 100-Meter Dash

Answer: Harold Abrahams

Abrahams injured his thigh the following year and never raced again after that. He went on to have a successful career as a lawyer in his native Great Britain. Liddell was the other main character in "Chariots of Fire". A devout Christian, he declined to race in the 100 meters because it was being held on a Sunday, and he competed in (and won) the 400 meters instead.

4. 100m Top 10 List for 2001-2011: Number 8 on the list is an American sprinter who recorded a 9.85 100m run on 22nd August 2004. Justin Gatlin became Olympic 100m Champion at which Summer Olympic Games?

From Quiz Ten-Speed!

Answer: Athens

Former University of Tennessee athlete, Justin Gatlin became one of the most respected sprinters in the history of athletics when he captured gold in the 100m and 4x100m at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He also won a surprise bronze in the 200m event at the same Olympic Games. A year later, he made history in winning both the 100m and 200m events at the 2005 Helsinki World Championships. Then on 12th May 2006, Gatlin shattered the then world record of 9.78 sec with a 9.77 run in Doha. This time was later rescinded from the record books when he failed an in-competition drugs test. Gatlin received a four-year ban for taking testosterone supplements. He has always protested his innocence and in 2011 returned to active competition with participation at the Daegu World Championships where he was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 100m dash.

5. When was the first time that the 100m dash was won by the existing world record holder?

From Quiz Olympics: 100-Meter Dash

Answer: Armin Hary in 1960

The German Hary was also the first man to be credited with a time of 10.0 sec. in the 100m dash.

6. 100m Top 10 List for 2001-2011: Number 6 on the speed list is the 2011 World 100m Champion from Jamaica, Yohan Blake. This extraordinary athlete clocked 9.82 on 8th September 2011 in Zurich Switzerland. How old was he when he ran this time?

From Quiz Ten-Speed!

Answer: 21

Yohan Blake was a part of the gold medal winning 4x100m relay team at the 2006 Beijing World Junior Championships. At the same competition he earned a bronze medal in the 100m dash. Yohan is from St. James, Jamaica and holds the distinction of being the youngest sprinter ever to break the 10-second barrier (19 years and 197 days) - when he ran 9.96 at the 2009 Grand Prix event in New York city. Yohan Blake is a training partner of Usain Bolt and surprised the world in winning the 2011 World Championships in Daegu over 100m. At the same competition, he partnered with Usain Bolt, Nesta Carter, and Asafa Powell in destroying the existing 4x100m relay world record.

7. When was the first time a new men's world record in this event was set at the Olympics?

From Quiz Olympics: 100-Meter Dash

Answer: James Hines in 1968

1968 marked the changeover to electronic timing (from tenths to hundredths of a second), and Hines was timed in 9.95. His record stood for 15 years, an eternity as these things go. After the Olympics, Hines signed with the Miami Dolphins pro football team, but never played.

8. Who won the 1988 men's race, only to be stripped of his gold medal 3 days later for steroid use?

From Quiz Olympics: 100-Meter Dash

Answer: Ben Johnson

After Johnson's disqualification, Lewis was given the gold and Christie the silver. After his suspension ended, Johnson attempted a comeback, but with little success. He competed in the 1992 Olympics, but failed to make the final.

9. In which year was the women's 100m dash first run?

From Quiz Olympics: 100-Meter Dash

Answer: 1928

In 1928, the women's 100-meter dash was the very first women's track and field event to ever be contested at the Olympics. The winner was Elizabeth Robinson of the USA.

10. Which womens' 100m dash winner was a survivor of childhood polio?

From Quiz Olympics: 100-Meter Dash

Answer: Wilma Rudolph

Rudolph lost the use of her left leg at an early age, and wore a brace from the age of 6. She gradually regained the use of her leg and at age 16 made the 1956 U.S. Olympic team. Then in 1960 she won gold at Rome. Quite an achievement considering her humble beginnings in rural Tennessee, as the 20th of her father's 22 children.

11. Which women's 100m dash winner was discovered, after 'her' death, to be a man?

From Quiz Olympics: 100-Meter Dash

Answer: Stella Walsh

Stella Walsh was the 1932 winner, and then finished 2nd to Helen Stephens in 1936. After the 1936 Olympics, some of Walsh's supporters accused Stephens of actually being a man. After Walsh's death in 1980, an autopsy was performed, and, in the ultimate irony, it was discovered that Walsh was a man.
