The Football League was the brainchild of William McGregor, a Scotsman who became a director at Aston Villa. He had moved to Birmingham to seek his fortune and opened a linen draper's shop near Villa Park. With the onset of the age of professionalism in 1885, football had become a disorganised shambles with games constantly being called off because clubs had arranged more lucrative matches elsewhere. McGregor decided that football needed order and he wrote to the leading clubs of the time putting forward a proposal that they should combine to arrange home and away fixtures each season - and thus the seeds of The Football League were sown. The plans were announced at a meeting at Anderton's Hotel in Fleet Street on 22nd March 1888, and the first league kicked off on 8th September 1888 with 12 member clubs. Jack Gordon of Preston is widely regarded as scoring the first goal of the new competition and North End went on to claim the first Football League Championship without losing a game, and win the FA Cup without conceding a goal.

A second division was added in 1892, and a third division was added in 1920. In 1921 the league was expanded again, with the addition of Division Three (North). The existing third division became Division Three (South). These two divisions were reformed in 1958 as Division Three and Division Four. When the FA Premier League was formed in 1992 (being the former Division One), the Football League shrank from 4 divisions to 3 divisions (Division Four became Division Three, Division Three became Division Two, and Division Two became Division One). In 2004 the First Division became the League Championship, Division Two became League One, and Division Three became League Two.
