Shrewsbury Town Trivia Questions

1. In which year was Shrewsbury Town founded?

From Quiz
Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: 1886

Shrewsbury Town F.C. were founded in 1886 in a local hostelry, either the Turf Hotel or the Lion Hotel, depending on which newspaper report of the time you read.

2. An amazing scoreline in this 1996 FA Cup first round tie at the Meadow, but do you recall the final score of Shrewsbury v Marine?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Shrewsbury 11 Marine 2

A useful cup run saw Shrewbury beat Scunthorpe (Round 2) and Fulham (Round 3)- both via replays - before losing at home to Liverpool in Round 4 by 4 goals to nil. The scorers against Marine were Dean Spink with a hat trick, an own goal, two for Peter Whiston, and goals apiece for Richard Scott, Chris Withe, Paul Evans, Ian Stevens and Mark Dempsey.

3. Who scored a hat-trick for Shrewsbury in the League Cup in 1997-98?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Lee Steele

It was Lee Steele who scored 3 in the 5-3 home defeat against Brentford, as Shrewsbury went out in the first round. The first leg was drawn 1-1 at Brentford, with Darren Currie scoring. In terms of the other players in the question, Devon White got a hat trick at home against Macclesfield in the League (won 4-3), whilst Steele also scored 3 at Leyton Orient (won 3-2). If you thought Paul Evans was the answer, his hat trick in the League Cup came a season later in the 4-3 win over Bristol City. A bit sneaky there, perhaps.

4. In 1937, Shrewsbury Town left the Birmingham League and joined which more prestigious league?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: Midland League

The Midland League was one of the stronger leagues outside of the Football League before and after World War Two. Shrewsbury Town won the league title at the first attempt in 1938 and then again in 1950.

5. An unhappy moment: in 1998-9 Town lost 6-1 at Leyton Orient in a Third Division encounter. Who scored the solitary Town goal?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Kevin Seabury

It was Seabury, a long serving versatile player and one of my Town favourites. He played for Shrewsbury between 1992 and 2002 (when he joined Dover), after joining as a trainee.

6. What type of animal provides Shrewsbury Town with their club nickname?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: Shrew

The answer is in the club name. They have always been known as "The Shrews", although their club crest actually consists of three lions heads.

7. Which Town favourite had three separate spells at the club, and scored one of the all-important goals against Exeter City to ensure Football League survival in 1999-00?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Mickey Brown & Brown & Michael Brown

Having started at the Gay Meadow as an apprentice in 1986, he joined Bolton in 1991 prior to his second spell at the club (1992-94). He then left for Preston before rejoining Town in 1997 after an initial loan spell. He left for the third time in summer 2001 to join Boston United, his final goal coming in the 3-2 win over Barnet in 2000-01.

8. Which prestigious cup did Shrewsbury Town win six times between 1891 and 1985?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: Welsh Cup

Although Shrewsbury is in England, the Welsh Cup featured a number of clubs from English counties which bordered Wales until the rules were changed in 1996. Shrewsbury's six victories were the most by any English club, although they weren't allowed by UEFA to represent Wales in the following season's European Cup Winners' Cup after any of their triumphs.

9. Here's a happier memory - the 7-1 Third Division win at Rochdale in 2000-01. Who scored a penalty in that game?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Steve Jagielka

They all scored in the match but Jagielka's was the penalty. Luke Rodgers got a hat-trick for the other three goals.

10. Which two colours have appeared on Shrewsbury Town's shirts virtually every season since 1970?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: Blue & Amber

Shrewsbury Town wore blue and white shirts from their foundation until 1970, when the white was replaced by amber. The most common shirt design since then has been blue and amber vertical stripes.

11. Town ended the 2000-01 season in style with a 3-0 win over the Third Division champions. Who were they?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Brighton and Hove Albion

Nigel Jemson got two and Luke Rodgers one as Town dispatched Brighton. The others all went up too. Incidentally, Town did the double over Blackpool this season, with 1-0 wins at the Meadow and at Bloomfield Rd. Shrewsbury themselves finished in 15th position with 55 points.

12. In which year did Shrewsbury Town gain Football League status?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: 1950

After winning the Midland League in season 1949-50, the expansion of the Football League saw Shrewsbury Town elected to the Third Division in 1950. The Third Division was split into north and south sections at the time, and Shrewsbury were placed in the north section for their first season before moving to the south section until the formation of Division Four in 1958 when the top halves of the north and south sections became Division Three (and the bottom halves became Division Four).

13. 2001-02 was a useful season with Shrewsbury in contention for the Third Division play-offs for much of the season. A veteran defender who previously played for Shrewsbury at the start of the 1990s returned this season. Who is he?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Mick Heathcote & Heathcote

It was, of course, Mickey Heathcote. He scored 2 goals in 2001-02, including a goal in the 1-1 draw against Lincoln City, the game in which Mark Cartwright was sent off. Heathcote scored 6 in his earlier spell giving him a total of 8 goals. Shrewsbury lost 2-0 to Luton Town on the final day of the season to miss out on the play-offs and finish 9th with 70 points.

14. The most successful era of Shrewsbury Town's 20th century history came under the stewardship of which manager between 1978 and 1984?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: Graham Turner

Graham Taylor was a central defender with Shrewsbury, becoming player-manager in 1978. His first season in charge saw the club win the Third Division title to gain promotion to the second tier of English football for the first time. The club twice reached the quarter-finals of the F.A Cup under Turner, losing to Wolves in 1979 and Leicester in 1982. Turner left the club for Aston Villa in 1984.

15. Who did Shrewsbury take on loan from Hartlepool in 2001-02?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Tony Lormor

He scored 2 goals in 7 appearances for Shrewsbury. Both goals came in 3-0 home wins in the Third Division (against Mansfield Town and Swansea City respectively). Having returned to Hartlepool he subsequently joined Telford United.

16. What is the name of the stadium that Shrewsbury Town moved into in 2007?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: New Meadow

New Meadow is the rather unimaginative name of Shrewsbury's new stadium. The first competitive game at the stadium was a League Cup tie against Colchester United on 14th of August of that year.

17. Division Three 2002-03: the games against Bury were certainly interesting. A hat-trick was scored for Shrewsbury in both games, but which players were responsible?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Jemson scored 3 in the 4-3 defeat at Gigg Lane whilst Lowe got his first hat-trick for Shrewsbury in the 4-1 win at the Meadow. Peter Wilding got the other goal.

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Answer: Aldershot Town

Shrewsbury finished the 2003-04 Conference season in third place, 18 points behind champions Chester City, and earned themselves a place in the end-of-season play-offs. After defeating Barnet in the semi-finals, they took on Aldershot Town in the final at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium. The match ended goalless, and was decided by a penalty shoot-out. Aldershot's players failed miserably, missing all three of their penalties, whilst Shrewsbury scored all three of theirs to return to the Football League at the first attempt.

19. Which striker rejoined Shrewsbury for 2001-02 after a spell at Carlisle United?

From Quiz Shrewsbury Town!

Answer: Ian Stevens & Stevens

Ian Stevens played for Shrewsbury between 1994 and 1997 and was quite prolific, playing a major part in the club's Auto Windscreens Shield cup run in 1995-6.
