The episode starts with Hal apparently working with some wood and a drill outside the house. He comes into a chaotic scene: Dewey lying over the washing machine repeating "I hate my brothers, I only like me", Malcolm and Reese fighting on the floor, and Lois splashing them with water and ordering them (unsuccessfully) to stop. Hal takes a beer bottle out of the fridge and when an exasperated Lois asks when he will be done, he says "as soon as I can".

The first thing we see in this episode is Hal and Lois peacefully sleeping, only to be woken up by yelling and broken glass noises. Since neither of the parents wants to get out of bed to deal with this, they both pretend to be asleep. Lois closes her eyes as soon as she notices Hal looking at her, while Hal fakes a snoring sound to trick Lois. Eventually, Hal gets up and tells his wife: "you better be naked when I get back".

As we hear Lois scream "oh my god!", Hal tells Malcolm that he needs a yes or no answer with no questions asked. Malcolm asks for $10 instead and Hal agrees. Then, Hal drags Malcolm out to the hallway after telling him he's a good son. Unfortunately, we never find out what Hal did that made Lois so angry!

Malcolm quickly runs back to his bed and pretends to be asleep, while an embarrassed Reese hides because he thinks he just wet himself.

The scene ends there, but we can only imagine how many times the children repeated this process!

Dewey complains that the fries are getting cold and takes a bite, so now Malcolm has to take that bite into account for his calculations. Malcolm then tells us that the last time they ate curly fries and it took them three hours to go through this process. French fries are often served as a side with burgers, but they can also be eaten by themselves or as a side for plenty of other foods.

When the bell rings, Malcolm comes back into the classroom holding a basketball. Caroline asks if there's anything he wants to say since his classmates stayed inside while he played ball. Malcolm pauses for a minute and then simply says: "Thanks!"

The next scene shows Hal opening the fridge and staring at two bottles of juice. He asks Lois: "which juice don't I like? Apple or grape?" Lois then tells him: "you don't like either".

(The Sun Is a Mass of Incandescent Gas)" by They Might Be Giants. Lois's actions have the opposite effect of what she intended since the boys immediately start fighting. The Nintendo 64 console was first released in 1996 and was revolutionary for its time. Created by the Japanese company Nintendo, the console was characterized by its unique controller with an analog stick in the center and colorful buttons on the right side of the controller.

Lois talks about a better use for the hair than simply throwing it away, including birds using it for nests.

According to the article, the paper initially regarded crosswords as a waste of time in the 1920s, but changed their mind after realizing that they could serve as a source of entertainment for people going through World War II. Since 1950, The New York Times has published a daily crossword puzzle, and has had editors like Margaret Farrar, Will Weng, Eugene T. Maleska, and Will Shortz.

Reese wakes Malcolm by punching him in the face and complaining that he didn't want to go to Malcolm's Krelboyne picnic. The Krelboyne class is a special group for gifted children who are given more advanced coursework, but are somewhat ostracized at school. Malcolm was placed in this class earlier in the season but doesn't enjoy being there. He is even more embarrassed because they are going to the picnic on the same weekend his older brother Francis is visiting. Malcolm makes it look like he is vomiting into the toilet to try to get out of the picnic, but Lois doesn't buy it. She instead scolds him for wasting "perfectly good vegetable soup" as she grabs the empty soup can from a shelf. Though we can't clearly see the brand, the can looks like it was a Campbell's product. The company began selling canned soups and other processed products in the U.S. in 1869.

Lois asks Malcolm, as she does every morning, what he is learning in his "genius class" (at the beginning of the season, Malcolm was placed in a classroom for gifted children). An annoyed Malcolm responds that it is the same as other classes, but that now he feels ostracized. As Hal is looking at the phone bills, he gasps in shock as he notices a big charge on the bill. He tries to play it off by saying he got a "sharp Cheerio" stuck in his throat, but Lois doesn't believe him and looks at the phone bill. She finds out that there is a $210 charge for a single call, as well as many other long phone calls. Their oldest son Francis, who is at a military academy, is the one making the calls to his girlfriend Beebee. Cheerios is a brand of cereal that was first released in 1941 as CheeriOats. Cheerios have a round shape with a hole in the middle, similar to other breakfast cereals like Froot Loops and Lucky Charms. The cereal has developed multiple flavors over the years, including Honey Nut, Apple Cinnamon, and Very Berry. In 2019, Cheerios temporarily changed the shape of their cereal to a heart, in an effort to promote the health benefits of whole grains. Since then, the brand has also used hearts as part of their brand image.

We first see Francis hanging onto his friend Stanley, who is doing pull-ups. Even though Stanley is the one doing the most effort, Francis is more tired and wants to take a break. He then opens a closet and finds his classmate Finley hiding in a closet. Finley, holding a baby doll's head, says he is scared because he was marked by "the brothers of the apocalypse" and haunted by the curse of "poquito cabeza" (which is apparently a hazing ritual performed by the seniors at the school). Finley asks Francis to turn in his math homework so he doesn't have to leave the closet, but deviously, as usual, Francis erases Finley's name from the paper so that he can pretend it is his work. The seniors eventually find Finley and carry him away from the room.

Malcolm and Stevie are playing catch with a baseball in their schoolyard. Because Stevie suffers from asthma, he takes a long time in setting the stage before he finally throws the ball back. When he finally does, he throws it really hard and causes Malcolm some pain. Malcolm throws the ball back but misses Stevie's glove, ending in Kevin's hands. Apparently, Kevin has only been at the school for two weeks but is hated by some of the other children, including Malcolm. Kevin refuses to give the ball back, starting a confrontation between the two boys. Baseball started being played between the 18th and 19th centuries. The invention of baseball has been commonly attributed to Civil War general Abner Doubleday. However, that story is widely considered to be false. A New Yorker called Alexander Cartwright is credited as one of the creators of modern baseball in the United States.

According to Malcolm, Hal got them free tickets to the water park through work, and it takes two days to prep his father. Apparently, this process includes shaving all the hair on Hal's body.

As the alarm clock goes off at 7:45 am, Malcolm realizes what day it is and excitedly shakes Dewey to wake him up, telling him "it's Monday morning". Reese isn't as excited as his brothers because, despite having all weekend to do so, he was rushing to finish his History homework. "Manic Monday" was one of the most popular songs released by the American pop rock band The Bangles. The song was released as a single in 1986 and gained great popularity, reaching as high as the second spot " on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts. "Manic Monday" was part of the album "Different Light", which also included hits like "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Walking Down Your Street".

Malcolm and the Krelboynes are all in the Wilkerson home watching a "Battle Bots" video, where robots fight in an open arena. Malcolm thought at first that it was a pornographic film because the Krelboynes were very concerned about getting caught. At first, the protagonist of this show is disappointed, but he gets excited when he sees the damage that those "killer robots" can do. Malcolm then says that he wishes they could do that. Apparently, the Krelboynes wanted him to say that: they argue that they have the intelligence and "lack of social life" to work on this project, but need Malcolm's house to do it without their parents noticing because the Wilkerson home is a place with a "total lack of caring adult supervision".

Many of the neighborhood children are seen playing street hockey outside Malcolm's house, but Malcolm seems to be struggling because he has to run rather than skate. Malcolm tells Stevie that he doesn't want to take the lessons because Hal is obsessed with skating to an unhealthy degree. As an example of this, Malcolm says that Hal calls skating "the brotherhood of the wheel". Malcolm says that his brothers, Francis and Reese, were never the same after taking those lessons from Hal.

Lois tells Malcolm she doesn't like how many communications she is getting from his teacher because the only time she can take a break from her children is when they're at school. Malcolm then tells his family that he has to participate in square dancing at school even though he doesn't want to. Reese mocks him and the Krelboynes and says that the whole school "laughs their asses off" when they see them dancing. Reese tries to change the word to "butts", but it is too late and Lois decisively pours dish soap into his mouth, asking him to gargle and then spit it. Malcolm even agrees with his brother, but their mom says that if gifted kids are supposed to square dance, then Malcolm will do it too. Hal then offers to drive the kids to school.

While the two employees were restocking a shelf with condoms, Craig points out that the two of them restocking that shelf together "is a little intense". Lois doesn't understand what Craig means, so he immediately retracts the comment and walks away. Malcolm, Reese, and Dewey then go into the store. Lois warns them not to touch or do anything before her shift ends in five minutes, but the boys quickly realize there is a steam cleaner with "hyper foaming action". Lois immediately realizes that she didn't specifically tell them not to touch the steam cleaner, and then finds her children covered in foam.

When the Wilkersons arrive at the picnic, they are greeted by Malcolm's teacher, who is fully in character as a member of the circus. She asks Dewey if he is "ready to join the circus", which makes a terrified Dewey cling to his dad's leg. Malcolm insists that the Krelboynes are not his friends, though they greet him by chanting his name and dancing around him. Francis is initially on board to help Malcolm escape but is soon distracted when he sees a pretty girl. Lois introduces herself to the other moms. One of them, Doreen, tells Lois that bringing brownies was thoughtful but that they have to be thrown away because they have walnuts. This is odd because none of the children in the picnic were allergic, but Doreen still thought "you can never be too careful". Doreen then smashes the baking dish until the brownies are completely destroyed and in the trashcan.

This episode of "Malcolm in the Middle" was released in the year 2000, when "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was airing its fourth season. The latter TV show was based on the eponymous film that was released in 1992. Joss Whedon created both the film and the subsequent TV series, which were both based around a teenage girl (Buffy) who faced off against a wide array of supernatural and evil forces. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" ended in 2003 after 7 seasons and became a common pop culture reference. Francis appears to be deeply infatuated with Beebee, describing the thought of being with her as the "only thing that keeps him going". Beebee tells him she feels the same way, but she is visibly disinterested as she is watching "Buffy" as they speak. Francis's phone call is cut short by Stanley, who explains that Commandant Spangler revoked his phone privileges for a month after Lois complained about the phone bills.
