As Nell explained to Lana and Lana explained again for Clark, sometimes the world is beautiful, and sometimes it is painful, but most of the time it's both. So much pain came out of this meteor-rock that only good can be left. Clark convinces Lana not to wear it anymore in the episode "Leech", and in "Tempest (1)", Lana gives the necklace to Whitney as he goes off to join the Marines.

Clark knows that he can't always be there to save her, so he decides that he will never be able to tell her without hurting her.
