Californication Trivia Questions

1. What kind of sporting event did Hank challenge Bill to, for a future date?

From Quiz
1.11 "Turn The Page"

Answer: tennis

Hank and Becca walked in on a dress rehearsal for Bill and Karen's wedding. Bill arrived moments later, having just come from a tennis victory. So, Hank then challenged Bill to a tennis date, but the more manly version of tennis with wooden rackets, knee socks and plum smugglers. The latter, I'm sure, being a subtle reference to man parts.

2. Who was Karen picking up at the airport?

From Quiz 1.9 "Filthy Lucre"

Answer: Bill

Hank came outside and saw Karen standing curbside. They hugged and talked briefly about his trip to New York, but she confirmed she was there to pick up Bill. Bill had been gone for a month, and had taken the same flight as Hank. Hank commented about all the hot towels Bill had used while on the flight. Hank then decided to grab a taxi, but Bill insisted he ride with them.

3. In the opening scene, who called Hank while he stared at blank computer page?

From Quiz 1.8 "California Son"

Answer: his sister

Hank was trying to write something new, as usual, when his sister called. This immediately went into a flashback of the last time Hank's father visited Los Angeles. Hank's sister called Karen as well, and told her that their father had died. Mark Margolis played Al Moody. Mark was previously on the HBO hit drama "Oz".

4. The episode began with Becca reading aloud to Hank. Whose poem was she quoting from?

From Quiz 1.7 "Girls, Interrupted"

Answer: Robert Frost

Becca: "Nothing gold can stay..." Hank asked why of all poets she chose Robert Frost, only Hank called him Frostie. She told him she liked it because it was short, and bleak and she heard it in a movie once. Dare I say she may have heard it in "The Outsiders"? As Becca left, Hank even said "stay gold Ponyboy". Frank Ferrano is the real name of Motley Crue bassist/song writer Nikki Sixx, a poet if I do say so myself.

5. Where did Hank meet the lady credited as 'Venice Beach Girl'?

From Quiz 1.6 "Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fonder"

Answer: grocery store

She asked Hank for advice on choosing wine, and then he ended up having to help her pay for it. She came home with him, sexiness ensued, and Hank woke up missing some of his belongings. Michelle Lombardo played Hank's newest lover in this episode.

6. When talking to Meredith, what does Hank describe as "contributing to the death of the English language"?

From Quiz 1.5 "LOL"

Answer: internet/text slang

Internet shorthand, most commonly referred to as "chat speak", consists of using acronyms to abbreviate phrases, missing punctuation and an overall lack of capitalization. That's just an example, and does not consist of all of the forms of chat speak. Hank had just awoken from an intense dream about Bill being a priest and Karen being a nun. Meredith used the acronym "LOL" when she spoke to him and he explained how much the internet lingo pained him as a writer. While using the chat speak is quick when texting, I have never used them in my own speech. I found Meredith's spoken use of "LOL" extremely annoying and it pained me as well. Amy Price-Francis played Meredith in season one.

7. Who was it that persuaded Hank to attend the fundraiser, which was held at his agent's office building?

From Quiz 1.4 "Fear and Loathing at the Fundraiser"

Answer: Meredith

Meredith prefaced her request with the fact that she HAD enjoyed all their "bedroom" time, but she wanted to break out of that old mold. Hank was open to the idea of her stepping out with "a little Hank on her arm". That is, he was until he heard about the exact event she wanted to attend. He conceded to her request after a little protesting.

8. What kind of event was Hank attending, when Todd Carr came in and disrupted the evening?

From Quiz 1.3 "The Whore of Babylon"

Answer: book signing

Hank was in the middle of his "whoring" speech, when Todd came in vigorously complaining about what Hank had been saying about him publicly. Todd was the director of Hank's great shame, "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Hank told Todd he thought that maybe Todd's biggest complaint would the fact that Hank had sex with his wife in all the rooms of their house. A fight ensued and Hank went to jail. Chris Williams, brother of actress/singer Vanessa Williams, played Todd.

9. At the top of this episode, Hank received a woman's phone number. How did she get it to him?

From Quiz 1.2 "Hell-A Woman"

Answer: paper airplane

In Hank's world, all of these choices are equally possible. But, in this episode he received a purple paper airplane from a woman in the car next to his. She spotted him daydreaming about Karen, and initiated contact. Later in the episode, the paper that contained the phone number appeared to be a lighter shade than the paper airplane.

10. This series premier covered a lot of juicy information about Hank and the people in his life. The first episode started off with one of Hank's dreams. Which event did NOT occur in his dream about the frisky nun?

From Quiz 1.1 "Pilot"

Answer: The nun turned out to be a man

The nun in his dream offered to perform a service in order to absolve Hank's guilt. She turned out to be young and sexy. When Hank woke up, the dream nun was really a married woman he had a one night stand with. Heather, the married lady, explained to Hank that her husband had never been able to satisfy her. As Hank was happy to do that for her, her husband came home. Hank had to hot tail it out of her home without his pants! Michelle Nordin played Heather, and Hank's dream nun. David Duchovny offered a hilarious first peek at a flawed man, who's good at heart. Hank Moody is a vast contrast to David's character of Fox Mulder on "The X-Files".

11. Becca announced that "it" had happened. What was "it"?

From Quiz 1.12 "The Last Waltz"

Answer: she started her period

Hank had to stop on the way to the wedding to buy Becca some feminine products. Hank apologized profusely for not being prepared for this eventuality, and Becca responded humorously with "Are you there dad? It's me, Becca. I'm fine. I'm not going to die or anything, I just got my period." Her comment was a direct reference to the Judy Blume novel about coming of age called "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret".

12. How did Dani convince Charlie to help her become an agent?

From Quiz 1.10 "The Devil's Threesome"

Answer: she used blackmail

She told Charlie she wanted to remain working for him, despite the sordid history. He wasn't too interested in that idea, but when she threatened to tell human resources about their sexually humiliating relationship, he reconsidered. He told her she appeared to have the makings of a good agent after all.

13. Charlie offered to bring Marcy home some food from his dinner appointment. He said they could eat it and watch all of the episodes he had saved on TiVo. What TV series were the episodes from?

From Quiz 1.9 "Filthy Lucre"

Answer: CSI Miami

Charlie said that he had to meet someone at Koi for the "4ooth" time. He asked her if she would like for him to bring her back some baked crab roll so they could eat in bed and catch up on all the "CSI Miami" episodes on their TiVo. She declined, saying she was going to go to book club. Charlie knew she hated that, so he was slightly taken aback that she was, for all intents and purposes, blowing him off. Koi is a real restaurant in Los Angeles. In 2008, there were locations in New York, Las Vegas and Thailand as well.

14. Finish Hank's quote. "Rehab is for _______."

From Quiz 1.8 "California Son"

Answer: quitters

He was sitting at a bar talking to a woman. She asked what were his thoughts on rehab, and that was his answer. The woman, named Trixie, was played by Judy Greer. Hank told her Trixie was the perfect name for a hooker.

15. According to Becca, who said she had to be realistic when it comes to love and/or happy endings?

From Quiz 1.7 "Girls, Interrupted"

Answer: her mom- Karen

Hank was sad to hear Becca's take on the possibility of happiness, and told her that happy endings are just as real as the unhappy ones. She asked him if he and her mom might be together again someday, and he said it was possible. She replied that she didn't think it was realistic and he asked why they had to be realistic. She said mom said she had to be realistic, and he said no she did not have to be.

16. After Bill asked Hank to talk to Mia's class on his behalf, Hank asked him for two favors in return. One favor, which Bill dismissed, was to call of the wedding to Karen. What was the other favor?

From Quiz 1.5 "LOL"

Answer: For Bill to give Hank his leather jacket

Hank arrived at Mia's school wearing the jacket. He then proceeded to dissuade her class about becoming a writer. He suggested a few alternatives to writing, including being a ditch digger and an umpire.

17. What great gift did Hank have for his daughter Becca?

From Quiz 1.4 "Fear and Loathing at the Fundraiser"

Answer: a cell phone

It appeared as though they may have had plans, and that he canceled on her for Meredith. After he gifted her with the cell phone (which looked like an iPhone), and explained that he really liked Meredith, Becca gave her blessing.

18. Who spoke this line to Hank? "Come over to the dark side Hank."

From Quiz 1.2 "Hell-A Woman"

Answer: Magazine rep

Yep, it was the representative from "HelL.A." magazine. She was trying very hard to sell Hank on the job as a blogger, and was also obviously attracted to him. She left without incident, citing she was already in a relationship. This line could have also come from Mia, as she is quite the teaser.

19. How old was Hank and Karen's daughter Becca?

From Quiz 1.1 "Pilot"

Answer: 12

Becca, played by actress Madeleine Martin, was twelve in the series premier. She liked Johnny Depp, and found a naked woman in her father's bed! The woman turned out to be the wife of the director who ruined Hank's novel. This woman, Sandy, was played by actress Camille Langfield. She also guest starred on "Charmed", "The O.C.", and "Las Vegas".

20. When Karen, Bill and Hank arrived back at Bill's house from the airport, they were greeted to a rehearsal from Kill Jill. What was Becca and her band playing for Mia, when the other three arrived home?

From Quiz 1.9 "Filthy Lucre"

Answer: "Surrender"- by Cheap Trick

Mia was in the pool watching Kill Jill's rehearsal, when the trio arrived in from the airport. Hank danced in appreciation and clapped when they finished. Karen wanted that song at her and Bill's wedding, but Bill objected.

21. When Charlie went through his fridge, he complained about a missing item. What did Charlie want, but not find?

From Quiz 1.7 "Girls, Interrupted"

Answer: Soy milk

Marcy asked if he was ever going to learn to digest dairy and he said it was nothing a new gastrointestinal tract couldn't cure. She did pull out a carton and hand it to him, so it was there after all.

22. What was Dani looking for in Charlie's office when Marcy arrived for a nooner?

From Quiz 1.6 "Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fonder"

Answer: an Advil

She was into role playing at the time Marcy arrived, but actually produced an Advil from off of the floor. So, it was possible that Charlie really had dropped an Advil earlier, and not just made up that story in order to create a role for Dani. Charlie was a bit shocked when Marcy almost caught him with Dani, and more so when she wanted to have a quickie in his office "like the old days".

23. Mia's class had time to ask Hank only one post-lecture question. What was it?

From Quiz 1.5 "LOL"

Answer: "Are you single?"

Hank answered the young lady with "of course I am, who'd have me?" He then found out how lascivious Mia's Creating Writing teacher was when the man talked about how the young girls made him feel. Lance Barber played Mia's teacher in three episodes of the first season.

24. What did Todd Carr tell Hank, while the duo was in the men's room together?

From Quiz 1.4 "Fear and Loathing at the Fundraiser"

Answer: he (Todd) was divorcing Sandy

Hank had already spotted Todd talking to Charlie, but did not know that Sandy had come to the event as well. Todd thanked Hank for getting him out of a bad marriage, but I think he was just saving face after Hank had slept with Sandy. Sandy tried to throw a drink on Hank, but Hank moved and it landed on Meredith's ex, Jonathan Mandel.

25. In Hank's voice over narration, what did he say was the title of his first blog?

From Quiz 1.2 "Hell-A Woman"

Answer: Hank Hates You All

Hank tried to blog from a random computer after he smashed his own. It did not work out so well. But honestly, I could hear Hank saying ANY of these lines.

26. Hank's ex, Karen, revealed to Hank that she was getting married to her boyfriend. What was her fiance's name?

From Quiz 1.1 "Pilot"

Answer: Bill

Hank was very upset to get this news, as he'd been holding out hope that Karen would come back to him. It turned out that in all their years together, Hank never wanted to get married. Eventually this caused Karen to leave Hank for Bill, who was revealed to have other large roles in Hank's life in both this premier and the second episode as well. Hank told Karen that he knew Bill was not the man for her, and described him as a "dial tone". Hank, being a writer, has many great descriptions for people.

27. Bill handed Mia a piece of bad news. What was it?

From Quiz 1.12 "The Last Waltz"

Answer: she couldn't publish the book

He said that a book with such a salacious title and content could bring him unwanted attention. She started protesting immediately and he made it clear that he worked with enough of the interested publishers to get the book canned easily.

28. Karen was worried that Hank would forget to feed Becca, so she decided to make her a week's worth of what?

From Quiz 1.11 "Turn The Page"

Answer: sandwiches

Bill needed Karen to sign some legal papers, so he took her away from her sandwich making task. He tried to comfort her somewhat by saying Becca was going through a phase, possibly copying Mia's acts of independence. He even offered the idea that Hank would let Becca down very quickly, as was Hank's way, and she'd be ready to come home soon afterward.
