Now, she's with the Man in Black who, speaking to her about the maze, has her shave him with the blade of a knife. She follows her visions back into the streets and to the church. Arnold is there, and she says she knows where his maze ends. It's her own grave. She begins digging. William and Logan continue-- William on horseback and Logan tied up, walking behind. They come across Lawrence's men in the woods. A train rides into Sweetwater and Teddy awakens as it pulls into the station. As time slows to a crawl, he hallucinates a massacre and sees Dolores walking across the path. He remembers this time. As a man bumps into him, he shoots at him and rushes back to the train as it departs.

Bernard dreams about his son, in his hospital bed. As he reads Charlie a passage from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", the boy begins to fade. Bernard wakes up in bed; it was all a horrible dream. That day, Bernard performs tests with the host of Hector Escaton who, during his narrative, had blacklisted conversations with the guests. After showing Hector images of modern cities, Bernard gets the sense that Hector is still functioning as normal. Later, Bernard asks a colleague about Elsie; apparently, she just started a leave of absence. A train continues to take Lawrence, William, and Dolores across the desert. Lawrence makes a comment about Logan. Oddly, William made it further than his friend ever did despite a certain lack of interest in adventure. That's when Dolores looks out the window. The local natives seem to be in the area, and there's reasons the train will need to be protected.

Ford, down on the cold storage level of the labs, takes the opportunity to talk to Old Bill about his old greyhound, musing that once his dog caught a cat, it didn't know what to do next. Dolores stands in a cemetery, surveying the graves and remembering her memory of a man asking her to find him. She stands with Logan and William on the outskirts of the town of Pariah, known for its rowdier outlaws and scoundrel citizens. They're finishing escorting a man from their previous quest. Heading into Pariah, vultures circle above the buildings. Dolores says it's beautiful in its own way...but it's a bit of a mess. Logan tells William that his family is planning to buy out the park since it seems to be hemorrhaging money, but there seems to be a lot of mystery still inside, behind closed doors.

Bernard meets with Dolores in the backroom labs once again, asking her if she remembers where she was and what happened. Her parents were killed and she ran. Bernard asks if she would like to forget, and she says no, because her pain and grief is all she has left for those she lost. She then confirms that she knows this based on a scripted dialogue she had inside her about love. With Bernard, she says that there may be something wrong with the world or, else, something wrong with her. He says that there's another option. If she plays the game and finds her way to the center of the maze, then she can be free. Dolores wakes up outside. In her hand is a revolver. William, still by her side, hands her a mug.

Bernard meets with Dolores in another backstage room of Westworld, asking her if she's been met for a diagnostic service since their last weekend. She confirms she has not discussed their earlier conversations. He hands her a gift-- a copy of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'-- and they discuss change. Dolores wakes up in bed the next morning while her father, already up and about, tends to the livestock. In her room, Dolores checks on the firearm kept hidden in her dresser drawer. She remembers the night the man in black arrived at her homestead and dragged her to the barn.

Dolores wakes up in the middle of the night to someone telling her to remember. She walks outside and tries to recall something. Two travellers ride a high-speed train and arrive at an immaculate station platform. One of the guests is Logan; he's excited to dive in. The other is William; he's apprehensive. When they're led away separately, William is asked several questions pertaining to his mental and physical health. How far you want to go with your adventure, the guide says, is up to him. There's no orientation; figuring out how the park works, based on your own choices, is part of the fun. When William is outfitted, he asks his guide if she's real. She says that if he can't tell, then there's likely no difference. He asks where he should change and she says it's up to him, slowly undoing the buttons on his shirt. She leaves shortly after, but says that all of Westworld's hosts, herself included, are there to serve.

A woman, Dolores, sits naked in a stark chamber. A fly walks across her left eye and she's asked if she's ever questioned her reality. She has not. Dolores would go about her days appreciating the natural splendour, and treating Newcomers with respect. After all, at one point, everyone was new to the world. A train of Newcomers arrives at the station and eager Newcomers make their way to the platform, finding their freedom in a western-era locale. They all paid a lot of money to be there; the immersion is immense. A man arrives at the local saloon, quickly grabbing a drink and meeting with the local prostitutes. He's not interested in their immediate gratification though. When he spies the beautiful Dolores leaving a shop outside, his attention is drawn and he follows her, helping her with her horse. They've met before; he came back. He grabs his horse and follows her across the landscape, back to her house.

As Dolores unearths a metal maze from a capsule within her own grave, she recalls what Arnold told her. The maze is something that she has traveled all this time. For her, Arnold always saw consciousness as the top of a pyramid that she had to ascend, but really she had to follow a maze, looping and twirling to reach its center. She's close, he says. They need to tell Arnold not to open the park; she's alive. The Man in Black takes the maze from her hand and asks her what it is. She says that she knew the answer once, and if she did, they would set her free. Unfortunately, Ford never saw Dolores and the Hosts as people. Arnold realized this and asked that she do something for him: kill every Host in the park. He recommended that Teddy help her as he would do anything for her. They would destroy the park together. The Man in Black tells Dolores that he needs to meet Wyatt still; he's the last person he needs to meet. What he doesn't realize is that Dolores is Wyatt. The Man in Black tells Dolores that he demands answers; she always says that theirs was the only world that matters. So he bought Westworld-- majority share. She insists that someone loves her and will come to save her.

In the Mariposa, Maeve watches as a new host of Clementine seduces a Sweetwater newcomer. The new host asks her if anything's wrong, but she doesn't respond, instead recalling her memories of a past life in which she and her daughter wandered the fields. She later tells Felix and Sylvester about this in the lab and they explain her mind works differently; she recalls memories perfectly, almost reliving them. She vows that she will get out, but she needs their help to remove her internal fail-safe-- an explosive in her spine designed to prevent her from leaving the park. She also decides to allow herself the ability to control other hosts. William and Dolores continue on horseback, finding their way to the edge of the river to find a massacre. William believes that the people of the ghost nation have found them. One man, barely alive, reveals that they were part of the ambush and while William wants to leave, Dolores won't go until he's dead. When Dolores heads to the river to get some water though, she hallucinates, seeing her own body floating in the river.

Bernard can't seem to get a hold of Elsie in any way and, when trying to locate her via his device, it can't seem to track her down in the park. He heads out to speak to Theresa and she makes her anger apparent over the investigation into her team's work, but Bernard assures her it's over. Theresa heads to Charlotte's room to find that she's spending her time sleeping with Hector. She lets Theresa in for a quick meeting specifically about the woodcutter incident and Ford's recent narrative project taking up half the park's resources. Charlotte explains herself simply-- the board is only interested in the hosts' coding, and not the park itself. She wants Theresa to convince Ford to retire, but they need to secure the code. But before that, they need to perform a 'blood sacrifice'.

Bernard heads down to floor B-82 and the place is in disrepair. The lights flicker; the ceiling leaks. In this seemingly-abandoned lab he finds a computer terminal and begins to work, connecting his device and comparing data. During this time, however, he identifies five other anomalies-- hosts unregistered with the new cataloguing system. Ford, meanwhile, considers building his canyon further, but stops himself before he's meant to demolish the small town Lawrence hails from. He spies the mark of the maze carved into a table there, and when he returns to his office in the labs, revisits the image in an old sketchbook.

As they walk through Pariah, Logan and William come across 'The Army of New Virginia', also known as 'The Confederatos', and this worries Dolores, who's heard stories about the mercenaries they are. Logan sees them as a key to the far reaches of the park. Elsewhere, the Man in Black and Lawrence have Teddy strung up on a mule. The latter knows that Teddy's not long for this world, but it'll take too long to get him to the healers in the town of Pariah. That's when a young boy comes along, inquiring as to their reasons for being in the area. The Man in Black sends the boy off to collect water for them from a nearby creek before telling Lawrence that he thought, for some reason, that their paths converged so that they could proceed together. In fact, Lawrence's path is coming to an end. To get Teddy the blood he needs, he slits Lawrence's throat, hangs him from a tree, and drains him. It's Teddy who the Man in Black was supposed to find.

Bernard and his colleague, Elsie, pore over the videos surveilling Mr. Abernathy since they originally thought that the found photograph was what sparked his breakdown. That said, something deeper must've happened, since he sat, ruminating over the image, for hours, well into the night. Elsie says that she would like to pull Dolores as well, since the episode could be contagious, so to speak, especially since she can't reprogram Abernathy to place back into Westworld. Dolores, however, was cleared. Dolores arrives in town the next day, and somehow remembers a bloodbath in the streets. She's snapped out of her daydream by the saloon's madam, and when asked to move along, she states the quote she was told by her father: "these violent delights have violent ends." William emerges from his changing room and chooses the final touch to his costume; he goes with a white hat, instead of black, and enters a door, emerging in a saloon. Well... a saloon car. Logan comes up behind him with a black hat and they embark on the train. They're in for a wild time, and Logan is eager to see the type of person William really is.

Theresa's body is found and Ford, Ashley, and Charlotte discuss her untimely end. Found at the bottom of a ravine, she is assumed to have slipped and fell. Along with her body, the materials for a satellite uplink were found. Charlotte says that it's all quite unlike Theresa considering her carefulness and loyalty. Ford, meanwhile, says that he shall be pulling back the reins on QA's influence in the coding since there was clear indication that their earlier investigation into Clementine's code was a hoax. He will also be reinstating Bernard as Head of Behaviour. Felix and Sylvester need to send Maeve back when the workers in the lab get word that things are tightening up. Maeve asks them about Arnold-- a name she knows from her dormant code. She also says that she has a few sophisticated changes in code she needs done. Outside the lab, Sylvester suggests that they tamper with her to get out of the situation.

Maeve awakens and head to the Mariposa, passing by the same events she does every morning. She heads into the saloon and closes the lid of the player piano upon arriving. Clementine finds her at the bar when she heads downstairs and yawns before Maeve asks her what her nightmares are about. Clementine goes on about her family and how, maybe, after a couple of years, they can all move out of the desert and live somewhere cold. That's when everyone in the bar stops moving except for Maeve. The lab techs head into the saloon to claim a host who's done something wrong, and while Maeve believes they're there for her, they actually leave with Clementine instead.

Teddy and the Man in Black reach Pariah discussing the maze on the inside of the scalp. Teddy knows it as a Native myth-- it's the sum of a man's life, the choices he makes, the things he hangs onto. At the center of the maze is a legendary man who has been killed over and over again, but returned to take power over time. They come across a wagon leaving town; there's trouble in Pariah and soldiers have closed the border. Felix tells Maeve that she's been programmed to do everything she wants to. She asks how he knows he's not a host as well, and he explains that he was born, unlike her, in the human world. She asks for proof and he pairs his device up with her, showing how her programming parses speech. She watches as her words are decided for her and, as this happens, a critical error shorts her out. Felix is unable to bring her back to consciousness without a password.

Bernard and Theresa cross paths in the control rooms of Westworld and she relays the concerns of the park's board of directors. While he claims that the issues in the park have been fixed, hosts are still being pulled for observation. Meanwhile, Ford's new narrative is causing a fair bit of disarray across the park. In the labs, Bernard finds Elsie still going over old narrative logs. The issue with Walter in Sweetwater has gotten more interesting. During his aberrant behaviour, he ended up having a dialogue with no one before killing six hosts in the bar. All six, according to Elsie, were part of past narratives in which they killed Walter. That's when they receive an alert. There's a stray host in the park. Elsie catches Ashley on the way up to the surface; the two of them need to go after the rogue host.

Out in the desert, the sheriff and his men sentence a bandit, Lawrence, to death by hanging, but are stopped at the last minute when the mysterious man in black approaches on his horse. After a failed negotiation, the sheriff and all of his men are killed. The man in black tosses his new companion the scalp with a cryptic image on the inside, loops the ropes tying Lawrence to the back of his horse, and they head onward to look for the deepest level of Westworld. Maeve, the madam of the saloon, muses about the voices in her head, telling her what to do, but claims that when she left the old world and step foot on solid ground again, she was convinced to do whatever she wanted to. Of course, she had to come in for repairs; after speaking to a man in the saloon, she recalled a horrific, bloody battle. Their real issue with her, however, is that no one wants to sleep with her. They up her aggression by 20%. If they won't sleep with her, they'll have to decommission her, especially with the new narrative on the way, and the need to cull any dead weight.

A new day begins in Westworld. Dolores wakes up in bed. Teddy wakes up on the train, coasting through the arid landscape outside town. Elsewhere, a futuristic laboratory continues work on androids; animals and people. Two scientists watch an anomaly; a prostitute android is brought in for observation and they spot something-- a small finger movement-- that isn't in the original code for her programming. It must've been Dr. Ford, they posit, since the action would be derived from the internal memory of the android which, while purged at the end of every day, may still be lingering, only slightly, to allow these unique subtleties to bleed through. The head programmer is called away. A host in cold storage is acting restless, and the security team fears a critical failure. The problem is, the hosts aren't updated in cold storage. Nonetheless, the security head dons his heavy armour..and gun.

Dolores and The Man in Black continue their fight and he tells her that no one will come for her. She says that William will find her, but he tells her William's true path. After he lost her, he developed an instinct for fighting on the hunt for her, joining Lawrence and killing encampments in the search; even Logan was put off by William's horrifying aggression. He retraced his steps to everywhere she had gone, even reaching the fringes, unable to find her. Out there, however, he found himself. There, at the edge, he told Logan his plan for Delos Corporation and his plan to raise the stake in the park before sending him off, naked, on the back of a horse. William did find Dolores again...right back at the start of the adventure. But she never remembered him. She does now. He became exactly what she made him, and she thought he was different. The world, she says, belongs to someone who has not yet come-- someone who will walk on what once was. He continues to ask for Wyatt and the center of the maze but, instead, she begins to fight back, forcing him into the church and dragging him through, breaking his arm and urging her to shoot him. Instead, he manages to stab her in the gut, clearing his delusions of her. That's when Teddy arrives.

Dolores flees into the darkness, falling to the ground once she's a certain distance. She quickly gets up when she hits the ground, and looks down to see that she's not injured before she keeps running. At Hector's camp, Hector heads out to relieve himself when Maeve comes across him bearing a shotgun. She reveals his future, suggesting that his crew will kill each other over the safe they stole in Sweetwater. Sure enough, all goes as per what Maeve has foretold and she shoots Armistice with her shotgun before revealing to Hector that there never was anything inside the safe. He decides not to kill her since she can get him the answers they both deserve. She says she'll get them both into Hell before setting their tent ablaze.

William and Dolores continue to ride along the tracks and he asks her what makes her believe the place she's looking for exists; she just says she can't turn back. She asks him the same-- what is he looking for?-- and he says that the only thing he had when he was a kid was books. Being in Westworld makes him believe he's in one of those stories and he wants to know what it means. William reveals to Dolores that he has a fiancee back home, and he will help her find what she's looking for but he has a life back home that he must get back to. Dolores runs off to cry, but he follows and explains that he doesn't need to pretend when he's in Westworld and he doesn't want to go back. The two of them embrace.

The Man in Black and Lawrence find that the woman with the snake tattoo is searching for something of great value, and while she initially wants to feed them to her horses, the man in black instead convinces her that they'll be coming along. In the labs, Ashley is informed that Dolores is running far off her loop, possibly in service of a guest, though it's unclear since Dr. Ford's new narrative is throwing so many hosts off their own tracks. Dolores ends up in another town with William and Logan where she comes across Lawrence's daughter. Dolores asks where she's from, and the girl says that they came from the same place. As Dolores has a flashback of a whitewashed church, she notices that the girl had drawn a maze in the sand. During this time, a park worker finds Dolores and suggests that he take her home, but she makes it clear that she will not be going back. Fortunately, William arrives to insist that she's with him, and she decides to continue on for the bounty.

In Sweetwater, Teddy takes a newcomer around and spies a group of outlaws leaving a building, shooting them and neutralizing the threat before cuffing their corpses to the front posts of the local saloon until they can be dealt with. Teddy heads inside and bribes Maeve into letting them keep the bodies outside, but when she gazes into his eyes she has a disturbing memory in which she saw his body, and the bodies of several hosts, getting reset in the labs behind the scenes. When Teddy's newcomer heads up to the bedrooms with Clementine, he instead spies Dolores outside the window and meets her outside at her horse, inevitably heading out to her ranch with her. He says he'd like to stay there with her but, uncharacteristically, she says that she doesn't really want to stay. She seems to want to go somewhere else...somewhere that for calls her. Teddy vows to take her someday. Dolores says that 'someday' usually means 'never'. She wants to go now.

Dr. Ford and Bernard talk about the hosts they've needed to decommission. The photograph, they think, was a tool used as an act of sabotage. They work in a difficult business, kind of like witchcraft, but they have to deal with this hard stuff. William and Logan arrive in the middle of Sweetwater as their narrative begins. William is already taken aback by the grand scale of everything, and Logan has to stop his friend several times. All of the hosts in town have some grand quest to embark on, but they're not going anywhere. They can grab a drink before they head out, he says. Dolores packs her groceries in her horse's saddleback and spies her reflection in a shop window, immediately remembering a conversation she had with Bernard in a solitary room. He makes it clear that she should not be discussing their little talks with anyone else.

Cold storage, a lengthy elevator ride into the basements, is flooded due to a faulty cooling system, and the head programmer, Bernard, is told to stay back while the security team advances. They enter the storage room to find countless of decommissioned hosts standing in uniform lines. In the back of the room they find Dr. Ford, the owner of Westworld, speaking to Old Bill, one of the oldest hosts in the line, over a drink. Bernard compliments Ford on the new gestures in the hosts as Bill puts himself way. Dolores heads out to town; Teddy disembarks from the train. He spots her from the window of the saloon. He doesn't help her today; he's taken aside by a group of Newcomers looking for a tour. When she drops a can from her bag, Dolores is instead greeted by the man in black who, confusingly to her, says he can't stop by in the evening since he has plans. She carries on with her day.

When Teddy arrives, he shoots the Man in Black several times in succession, knocking him to the ground to check on Dolores. He tries to get her to a doctor, but she tell him to take her to where the mountains meet the sea, like he promised. They load up onto his horse and ride onward. The Man in Black begins to rouse from unconsciousness. Felix brings Maeve to the cold storage basement and they sift through to find Clementine in a back room. With her, to Felix's shock, is Bernard, dead on the floor, having shot himself in the head with a gun. Maeve asks if Felix can bring him back online, so he starts getting back to work. Sure enough, when Maeve says so, he wakes up. Bernard is concerned; he's woken up with all of his memories intact. He tells Maeve that it's not the first time it's happened to her either, and she's surprised by his statement. There are a few, he says, like her. Maeve says that she wants her memories removed, but Bernard says he can't; it would destroy her and her path to consciousness. How would she be able to learn if she couldn't remember?

At the Confederato camp, Logan tries to let bygones be bygones and William tells him what he wants to hear-- that Dolores was never real. After Logan unties William from his seat, the two of them share a drink and embrace. Logan is simply glad that despite the enthusiasm, it gave them a chance to get to know each other before they became brothers-in-law. Teddy awakens at his and the Man in Black's camp to find that the woman they found was part of Wyatt's gang all along. They've been surrounded by Wyatt's men. The woman suggests that they'll find Wyatt in Escalante, where they saw him last. That day, as Teddy recalls, they killed everybody and then Wyatt turned the gun on him too. When he probes deeper, however, he recalls that he, the former sheriff, was the one who killed all the people of Escalante. The woman suggests that he isn't ready to reunite with Wyatt yet, but maybe in the next life. After she stabs him and leaves him to die, she tells the Man in Black that the maze was never for him and she knocks him out.

Ford meets Charlotte, Theresa, and several advisers in the labs to discuss the reveries in fuller detail. In the code review, they found Clementine. She was set back to a previous build and, in front of the board, is forced to face an attacker in an adjacent room. They go through this until Theresa freezes the situation, rolls her back, wipes her memory, and starts again. This time, she fights back, attacking the man who fought her and killing him. Ashely has to enter the room and, after failing to stop her motor function, shoots her to put her down. Theresa explains that the malfunction is due to an overabundance of code overriding decision making capabilities allowing the hosts to, as it would seem, hold grudges. Charlotte explains that the hosts will need to be rebuilt from the ground up. She fires Bernard on the spot.

Teddy takes Dolores back to the ranch and they find that her father has, uncharacteristically, left the livestock out. That's when they hear gunshots. Teddy rushes up and, along with her mother and father, he's killed. Ford speaks to Teddy in the labs when he's being reset. According to Ford, Teddy's a man who's died over a thousand times, all in a narrative to keep Dolores around. People are meant to find him to find Dolores and, possibly, have their way with her. Teddy claims he has dreams of reckoning for his mysterious past, but he does want to give Dolores the life she deserves. According to Ford, Teddy has no actual past, but just a formless guilt. So it's about time he uploads a narrative. That's how Teddy learns about Wyatt, a man who killed because he claimed to hear the voice of God. The next day, Dolores ends up back in Sweetwater to purchase some essentials when she's accosted by some newcomers. Teddy fends them off when the newcomers feel as though they should go for something a bit easier. That day, Teddy takes her out into the desert and teaches her how to fire a gun, but she finds she can't pull the trigger. That's when the Sheriff and a few newcomers come along. There's been sign of Wyatt in a town nearby. He promises he'll come back...someday soon.
