Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which breed of little dog was the result of a cross between a Scottish terrier and a Sealyham terrier in 1948?

Answer: Cesky Terrier

Cesky terriers were originally bred in Czechoslovakia by Frantisek Horak. The American Kennel Club places this breed in the Miscellaneous Class. Bred for hunting in the forest, they weigh about twenty pounds on average and stand about a foot high.
2. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has been held every year in New York City since 1877. The Best in Group category started in 1924 and the overall winner for Best in Show in 1907. Which breed won the most titles for Best in Toy Group during the twentieth century?

Answer: Pekingese

The pekingese won Best in Toy Group 20 times during the 20th century, including the inaugural year 1924. This breed has also won the prestigious Best in Show award three times in 1960, 1982 and 1990.

The pekingese is commonly referred to as "peke" or "lion dog". This breed has been identified as being ancient, meaning it has few genetic differences from wolves. China is the country of origin and for centuries only members of the Chinese Imperial Palace were allowed to own them. They were first brought to England in 1860 during the Second Opium War. They are easily recognizable by their flat faces.
3. There are six distinct breeds of dog that hail from Japan. The Shiba Inu is the smallest. In Japanese, "inu" means dog, but what does "shiba" mean?

Answer: Brushwood

DNA analysis traces this breed back to the 3rd century B.C. Bombing raids on Japan during World War II nearly wiped them out.

They were bred to hunt small game through thick undergrowth and shrubs. Females should weigh about seventeen pounds and males closer to twenty five.
4. Which of the following breeds of small dog is known to regularly exhibit traits and attitudes usually associated with cats?

Answer: Japanese Chin

The Japanese chin are very alert and independent dogs. Like cats, they wash their face with their paws and often search out high places to rest. They can walk across a table without disturbing anything. They do well in new situations and are generally friendly with strangers. For this reason they make good therapy dogs and are often used for this purpose. The chin stands on average 10 inches at the withers and typically weighs less than ten pounds. They have large eyes set wide apart.

The exact origin of this breed is unknown but it is believed that they arrived in Japan as a gift to royalty sometime between the years 700 and 1000. They have long been kept by Japanese nobility and there are some variations as each house bred these animals in their own way.
5. In 1994, "The Intelligence of Dogs" was published by author Stanley Coren. This book ranked dog breeds by intelligence. Which breed of small dog was ranked 79th out of 80 breeds studied?

Answer: Basenji

The standards used in this study were based on the dog's ability to understand new commands and to obey the first command given. There are of course other ways to measure intelligence than just obedience. The papillon was ranked 8th, the pug 57th and the Chihuahua 67th. The border collie was ranked first overall.

This breed originated in Central Africa and are sometimes called "Congo dogs". They were brought to England in the 1930s. They are among the largest of the small dog breeds, weighing close to twenty five pounds and standing around sixteen inches in height.
6. In show competition, a toy fox terrier would be disqualified for having a "Dudley" nose. What is that?

Answer: nose which lacks pigmentation

The "Dudley" nose is also known as "winter nose" and is hereditary. Dogs with this condition will have a nose that is white, pink, or chocolate in color. A toy fox terrier will be disqualified from show competition unless the dog is chocolate in color and has a chocolate nose. It is considered to be a genetic fault as the nose should be black.

The toy fox terrier is American in origin. They are quite small weighing only seven or eight pounds on average. They have pointed ears with large eyes. They are excellent companions and are well suited for apartment life.
7. A dog's health is something every owner should be concerned with. Which of the following breeds is most likely to develop cancer?

Answer: Scottish Terrier

"Scotties" develop cancer more often than other small breeds, particularly bladder cancer. They are also prone to a disorder called "Scottie cramp", which affects their ability to walk.

The Scottish terrier has a double coat and the most common color is black. They are very active, curious and determined dogs. Well built for a small dog only about a foot tall, they generally weigh about twenty pounds.
8. This little breed of dog was dangerously close to extinction in the early 1940s until nobility from its native country worked hard to save them.

Answer: Swedish Vallhund

Count Bjorn von Rosen of Sweden was recognized in Great Britain for his role in saving these dogs in 1984. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Swedish vallhund in 2007, and it made its first appearance at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2008 in the Herding Group.
9. There is a strange contest involving dogs that takes place each year in Petaluma, California. The contestants are generally from the U.S., but there are no restrictions except the dog must be healthy. A Chinese crested dog won this event seven straight years from 2002-2008. Which contest is it?

Answer: World's Ugliest Dog

The contest is part of the Sonoma-Marin fair in California. The winner takes home $1000 cash. The dog and owner are also featured in newspaper articles and on television talk shows. In 2007, during the seven year streak, a Chinese crested-Chihuahua mix won the contest.

Chinese crested dogs come in two varieties, hairless and powderpuff. They have longer toes than other dogs which is known as hare foot. The American Kennel Club did not officially recognize this breed until 1991.
10. In order for a dog to be considered small or little, it must weigh twenty five pounds or less. Only one of the following breeds fits this category. Which one?

Answer: Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a white dog which requires a lot of grooming. On average, they weigh ten pounds and stand about a foot tall. They are gentle and playful dogs, making excellent companions and good to have around children.

The exact origin of this breed is unknown but they are believed to come from Spain. They were brought to the Canary Islands then back to mainland Europe, where they became immensely popular in Italy and France.

Saluki and Brittany breeds both weigh in around forty pounds on average. Samoyed is a little bigger at sixty pounds.
