Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the two foxhounds is slightly shorter and stockier?

Answer: English

The American foxhound was designed after the English, and bred to be lighter built and taller. The American has a keener sense of smell, and is even faster in the chase. The English foxhound is shorter so that it can be more agile running through the rough brambles of the English countryside.
2. The foxhound's size would fit in the category of:

Answer: Large

The American foxhound's size range is generally from 21-25 inches (53-64 cm) tall, and weight between 65-75 pounds (30-34 kg).
3. What, in the majority of cases, is the foxhound's energy level?

Answer: Very active, needs a lot of exercise

Foxhounds aren't recommended for apartment life, since they are very active indoors. These dogs are suited best with an acreage and someone willing to spend a lot of time giving them a great deal of exercise. This breed can run around a square mile farm and return at night still enthusiastic and eager to run! Not so surprising, considering as hunting dogs, they were bred to run all day.
4. How could you describe the American foxhound at home?

Answer: Sweet, affectionate, gentle, and loving

Foxhounds are generally a very sweet, affectionate, and people-loving breed. Their broad, pendant ears that frame their face, as well as their sweet, imploring expression make this easier to believe. They are excellent with children and tend to get along well with other dogs becasue of their pack heritage.

However, because they were bred for hunting, they shouldn't be trusted alone with non-canine pets.
5. How could you describe the American foxhound in the hunt?

Answer: A brave, intense warrior, rather uninterested in anything else

Earlier we talked about the foxhound's energy requirements, and during the hunt foxhounds get to carry out what they were truly bred for. This is a very intense and exciting moment for them, when they become brave and focused on only the hunt itself.
6. What are foxhounds like with strangers?

Answer: Varies widely; some are protective, others very friendly

What's interesting is how widely protectiveness varies in this breed. Some foxhounds love everyone, and just HAVE to meet every person they see, even if it means dragging their owner accross the street to see them. Others are much more reserved and/or protective, and can be used as watchdogs. Why such a difference? No one knows! But if you ask me, I'd say it makes the breed even more special.
7. Foxhounds can be difficult to housebreak.

Answer: True

Hounds in general have a tendency to be somewhat difficult to train and/or housebreak. Perhaps part of the reason is that, in history, they were mostly outside kennel dogs and they see the house as no different. One reason why they can sometimes be slightly difficult to train is because they can easily be distracted by an interesting scent, and will take off after it if possible.

Otherwise, with proper training methods and positive reinforcement, foxhounds shouldn't be too hard to train provided that you don't give prolonged training sessions. Remember, it is unfair to expect exceptional obedience from a breed bred to be constantly on the go, so have patience!
8. Unlike most hounds, foxhounds bark/bay very seldom.

Answer: False

Nope -- in this regard, foxhounds are just like most hounds, and bay regularly if they see fit. They have a very melodious bark, and its tones have even been used in popular songs. Due to the reasons mentioned, and because of their history as outdoor pack kennel hounds, foxhounds do not always make good house pets. If you want one as a pet, look into show lines instead of field types.
9. Suprisingly, the American foxhound can have a rather lengthy grooming process due to its heavy shedding.

Answer: False

Nah, just trying to fool you. Foxhounds are very easy to groom, and are an average shedder. They should be combed and brushed with a firm bristle brush, and bathed only when necessary. The brushing should take place once or twice a month.
10. In 1650, the first English hounds were brought to America, and were part of the American foxhound's breeding program. Who were these hounds given to?

Answer: George Washington

Over a century later, these English hounds' lineage was bred with a French hound given to George Washington as a gift by Lafayette. Those two breeds, French and English, produced the American foxhound. In the 17th century, they were used for seeking out Indians. After that, they were used as tireless and efficient game hunters.
