Gymkhana Trivia Quiz

This is a quiz on the basic rules and patterns of gymkhana. The questions in this quiz go by the rules of the California Gymkhana Association. The CGA is not the only gymkhana association, but probably the largest. Rules for adults and kids are the same.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What should you do when you're in the arena before you make your run?

Answer: Acknowledge the judge

In gymkhana, you are not allowed to get a running start, so you must cross a certain line before you will be allowed to make your run. One of the judge's duties is to be sure you are past that line before you start.
2. What is the most common type of saddle used in gymkhana?

Answer: Western saddle

The horn on a western saddle was not meant for hanging on to, contrary to popular belief. Cowboys dally their lariats around the horn after roping a calf to hold it secure.
3. Which gymkhana event is commonly referred to as 'the cloverleaf pattern'?

Answer: Barrel racing

The cloverleaf pattern is three barrels set in a triangle. The rider must turn around them, making one right turn and two lefts, or one left turn and two rights, then race back across the finish line. The shortest time wins. If barrels are knocked over, several seconds are added to the finishing time.
4. What are the possible divisions for gymkhana?

Answer: FC, A, AA, AAA, SUPREME

FC stands for Future Champion. Divisions are like your level. If you can hit AA times, consider yourself a very good competitor. Supreme times are very rare at the smaller gymkhanas.
5. Most people prefer stallions for their kids to ride in gymkhanas because stallions have speed and confidence that mares and geldings lack.

Answer: False

Most people prefer geldings because of their calmness and true confidence. They're also a little more forgiving than mares. Kids under eighteen aren't even allowed to compete on stallions. Stallions are too unpredictable, and they're not really much faster than geldings.

They're just a little more fiery. One of the other advantages to geldings is that you never have to worry about them coming into season like you do with mares, and you never have to worry about them acting up when they see a mare like you do with stallions.
6. Which is the event that includes bending and circling both poles and barrels?

Answer: Big T

In Big T, you must weave through three poles, circle two barrels, and weave back through the poles to the finish line.
7. In Speed Ball, you must drop a golf ball into a bucket that's sitting on a barrel at the other end of the arena then race to the finish line as fast as you can.

Answer: False

In Speed Ball, you must go around a cone with a hole cut in the top, drop the golf ball into the hole, and race home. The cone is sitting on the ground, so you have to lean from your saddle to drop the ball in. The hole is five inches in diameter, but tricky to hit.
8. Keyhole is the event which requires the ability to...

Answer: ... turn around quickly and in one spot.

In keyhole, there is a white chalk circle with an opening drawn on the ground. The rider must take his horse into the circle, turn around, and race home.
9. Figure 8 Flags is the event where you must make a figure eight around two barrels, exchanging flags at each one.

Answer: True

In Figure 8 Flags, you start out with a flag. The start/finish line is between the two barrels, so you actually cross it three times. You cross it to start, exchange flags, cross it to get to the other barrel, exchange flags, and cross it as a finish line. The second time you cross it does nothing.
10. What's the most popular breed of horse used in American gymkhanas?

Answer: Quarter Horse

The American Quarter horse is very popular under a western saddle. It is strong and fast, perfect for working cattle. It's also very versatile.
