Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not a name used to refer to wolverines?

Answer: Forest spirit

The name carcajou is a Native American word that means mountain devil, or evil spirit.
2. What is a baby wolverine called?

Answer: Kit

Wolverines reproduce every other year, with a typical litter being of 1-6 kits. Wiffel I made up, I think it has a nice ring to it though.
3. The wolverine is a relative of the skunk, however they do not possess any musk glands associated with their smelly cousin.

Answer: False

Wolverines do possess an anal musk gland. Many a trapper has come home to find his catch devoured and his lodge filled with the awful smell denoting his sneaky visitor.
4. Wolverines are renowned for being fearless, which stems in part from their propensity to drive larger predators away from a kill. Which of these predators will not back down when confronted by a hungry wolverine?

Answer: Siberian tiger

It seems the other animals know the reputation of the wolverine. Though any of these animals would probably win in a fight with a wolverine, they recognise that their smaller opponent will not back down and often choose to avoid the risk of serious injury that could stem from such a fight.
5. There has been some debate about the taxonomic classification of wolverines. Some people say they are all of the one group, others make distinctions. Which of these is not a taxonomic group proposed for wolverines?

Answer: Gulo gulo mustelinae

Gulo gulo gulo is the Old World wolverine, Gulo gulo luscus is the New World variant. Gulo gulo vancouverensis is the Vancouver Island wolverine, which some consider to be a different sub species due to its large skull.
6. Wolverine sightings are fairly rare, partly due to their remote habitat, partly due to their inherent shyness and partly due to dwindling numbers due to poaching. What is the wolverine's pelt primarily sought for?

Answer: Parka linings

The smooth hairs of the wolverine's coat make it especially resistant to frost.
7. Peaking at about 45 centimeters in height and about 115 centimeters in length, this feisty predator is capable of tackling prey well outside its weight division. Which of these is the largest creature known to be hunted by wolverines?

Answer: Caribou

There have been reports of wolverines pouncing from above onto the backs of unsuspecting caribou and ripping into them with their sharp claws and teeth and clinging on until the wounded animal succumbs to exhaustion. Not a bad effort considering the wolverine is giving away many times its own body weight.
8. Wolverines construct rough beds of grass or leaves upon which to sleep.

Answer: True

These beds are generally made in caves or crevices, under fallen logs or in the abandoned dens of other animals, though occasionally they will make their bed under the snow.
9. Which of these is not a relation of the wolverine?

Answer: Genet

The genet is of the family Viverridae, though it does have many weasellike qualities. The zorilla is a skunklike creature that lives in Africa.
10. Many wolverines are caught in traps every year.

Answer: True

Wolverines are notoriously difficult to trap; they have been known to spring traps by turning them upside down or by dropping a foreign object into the trap. They have even been known to carry the trap away and bury it in the snow. They are also quite happy to use the traps to their own advantage, waiting for another animal to become ensnared then helping themselves to a free lunch.

Despite this, man is the dominant predator for the wolverine as they are considered to be a pest to farmers raising reindeer, sheep and other domestic animals that are preyed upon by the wolverine.
