Answer: Dinghy

Though it is not common to get all twelve clue words in order, I will be using this format to show how the Double Cross is solved.

Here are the first six letters, in their correct places, to help decipher the quote.

-i-- -------- --- -n ------- ---d ----- --- -- ---y--g ----- --- h--- ----.

We have the "g" ending a word. Some can start to infer that the two letters before the "g" are "i" and an "n". Making correct inferences can help greatly in figuring out the later words. In this case the words that the "i" and "n" are in.
2. If a knife is this, it needs to be sharpened.

Answer: Dull

We now have ten letters of the puzzle.

-i-- -------- --- -n ---d--- ---d ----- -u- -- -l-y--g ----- --- h--- --l-.

We have a two letter word ending in an "n". We can assume that the letter before it is either an "a", "i" or "o".
3. The name of a Chaim Potok novel with "The." In the Star Wars movies Anakin Skywalker was the _____ one.

Answer: Chosen

Sixteen of the 61 letters are now in place.

-i-e -------- n-- -n ---d--- ---d c---s -u- -- -l-y--g -h--- -o- h--- --l-.
4. A Rolling Stones song or what trees can do in a strong breeze.

Answer: Sway

Twenty letters are in place now.

-i-e ---s---- n-- -n ---d--- ---d ca--s -u- -- -l-y--g -h--- yo- h--- w-l-.

We can guess at the letter following the "yo" now. It will likely be a "u".
5. A room for horses or what you don't want your car to do.

Answer: Stall

Twenty-five letters are now in the grid.

Li-e ---s-s-- n-t -n ---d--- ---d ca--s -u- -- -lay--g -h--- yo- h--- w-ll.

We can start to guess at the letters missing from Li-e, n-t, w-ll and the first letter in -lay-g, having already assumed the letters before "g" are "i" and "n".
6. A Slinky toy is a ____ of wire or plastic. If alarmed some snakes can do this with their tails.

Answer: Coil

Twenty-nine letters are in place but no help in guessing more words.

Li-e c--s-s-- n-t -n --ld--- --od ca--s -u- i- -lay--g -h--- yo- h--- w-ll.
7. A car part or the title of a Sheena Easton song.

Answer: Strut

Thirty-four letters are in place, more then half.

Li-e c--s-st- n-t -n --ld--- --od car-s -ut i- -lay--g -h-s- you h--- w-ll.

We have our first confirmed word in "you" and can start guessing at the missing letter in car-s.
8. An award winning fake news organization, with "The." A vegetable that grows underground and can often be found atop hamburgers.

Answer: Onion

Thirty-nine letters are in place.

Li-e co-s-st- n-t -n -old-n- --od car-s -ut in -layi-g -h-s- you h--- w-ll.
9. What a basketball is thrown through to score points.

Answer: Hoop

Forty-three letters are in place.

Li-e co-s-st- n-t -n hold-n- -ood car-s -ut in playi-g -h-s- you ho-- w-ll.

The second word is confirmed with "in". Most all words can be guessed at now.
10. The last name of Israeli politician Menachem or to do the first part of an action.

Answer: Begin

Forty-eight letters are in place now.

Li-e cons-st- n-t -n holdin- good car-s but in playi-g -h-s- you ho-- well.

Three more confirmed words in "good", "but" and "well".
11. Students who are bored in class may do this in their notebooks. The Wise company makes a corn chip called Dipsy ______s.

Answer: Doodle

Fifty-four letters are now in place.

Li-e cons-st- not -n holdin- good cards but in playi-g -hose you hold well.
12. When you put flour in a straining device to separate out coarse particles, you are doing this. Sometimes on television, we can see police officers doing this through trash bags or dumpsters, when looking for evidence.

Using the clues from the first twelve answers we begin completing the Double Cross.
