Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SHUN

Answer: Dachshund

The dachshund was bred to hunt badgers. The elongated body and short legs of the dachshund enabled it to crawl into a small badger hole and retrieve the badger. It is tenacious, clever, and brave, traits that were needed when hunting an animal as ferocious as a badger. Dachshunds come in a variety of colors and coats.
2. WHIP

Answer: Whippet

The whippet is a medium-sized, slender sight-hound that is built for speed. These short-coated dogs come in many colors and have a long pointed tail. They look a lot like the greyhound but are slightly smaller. They are intelligent, sweet, and docile and must be handled gently as it can be easy to break their bones unintentionally.
3. MUTE

Answer: Malamute

The malamute is a strong-willed, affectionate breed that has great strength and endurance. They were bred to carry heavy loads over long distances. They have a thick, heavy coat and a plumed tail which that curls over the back. They are usually white with markings of sable, gray and black throughout the coat. Occasionally they have a facial marking that looks like a mask. Training should start early with a malamute as his intelligence and need for exercise can get him into trouble.
4. SPAN

Answer: Spaniel

Spaniels are a type of gun dog that come in a variety of sizes and colors. Most spaniels are bi- or tri-colored with longish hair and feathers. Spaniels are/were used for water retrieval as well as land retrieval. Spaniels are known for their wonderful dispositions, intelligence, and trainability. Spaniels fall into the medium to large dog groups.
5. PILL

Answer: Papillon

The papillon is a toy breed with a medium length feathered coat and large erect ears. The papillon gets its name from the French word for "butterfly" and is a reference to these ears. Although they are a small breed, they are a lot tougher than they look.

These breeds love attention and are not known for "yapping" as can be seen in some toy breeds. They are white with patches that can be of any color.
6. KING

Answer: Pekingese

The Pekingese is a tiny dog that sports a very long coat that can be any color. This is an ancient, brachycephalic (flat-nosed) dog that is assertive and sure of itself. For many centuries only Chinese royalty was allowed to own this dog and it has survived virtually unchanged for 2,000 years.

This breed does well in apartments and does not need lots of exercise, an occasional walk will do. The Pekingnese is an example of a small dog who is not aware that he is small and is unafraid and independent.
7. MAST

Answer: Mastiff

One of the largest of all dogs, the mastiff is often used as a guard dog. Heavily boned, with a large head, the mastiff is a type of dog as opposed to a breed. There are many varieties of mastiff, but all are very large, weighing over 100 lbs. or more by the time they are a year old.

The mastiff comes in all colors, has a short coat, and because of their great size early training is a necessity. Although they have been used as war dogs and guard dogs, with the right training they can be gentle, affectionate pets.
8. VANE

Answer: Havanese

The Havanese is one of the rarer breeds of dogs and is the national dog of Cuba. This small, long-haired dog comes in a variety of colors and has large intelligent eyes. The Havanese is a very friendly, gentle, playful dog that makes for a wonderful pet. At one time, their numbers had dipped very low but have been increasing steadily for the past 30 years.
9. POME

Answer: Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a tiny, long-haired breed that has a plumed tail which curls over the back. The most common color for the Pomeranian is a golden strawberry-blond. It is an independent, active, outgoing breed. Their luxurious coat requires regular brushing and most enjoy the activity as they love being the center of attention.
10. BERM

Answer: Doberman

The Doberman is a medium sized dog that is slender in build, with a short coat that can be black, red, fawn or blue. Often used as watch dogs, the Doberman is energetic and fearless. The ears and tail of the Doberman are often docked while they are puppies, giving them a very distinct appearance.

This breed is clean and easy to groom. Early training is a must with this breed and they are very trainable and loyal to their owner.
